HELP: Loose Stools for 6 Days

My 13 month old son has had loose stools for six days as of this Monday. He goes to daycare and when this started last week on Wednesday, they said a bunch of kids had some sort of stomach bug resulting in just loose stools (blowout diapers). They mentioned it goes on for just 2 days. Well my son has had it for 6 days now and he had very watery diarrhea two times on Friday. I called the Dr and he said it sounded like rotavirus and just to keep him hydrated, which he is. He had 2 normal solid stools on Saturday evening but back to loose stools all day Sunday and today. My question is, has anyone gone throught this?? When does it end? Could it be teething? Food allergy? What helps to firm up the stool? He has no tempature (I keep taking it) and he's in a good mood so it's not really affecting him otherwise.
Thanks everyone!

If it is rotavirus like the doctor said (I would go off of that at this point), my son had diarrhea for 10 days. I wouldn't look into any other causes at this point until you reach about 2 weeks with it.

Diarrhea does not mean just loose or watery stools - but how often a child has these kinds of stools.

Hydrate with fluids - pedialyte as several other mothers suggested because it will help restore lost electrolytes.

Feed him the BRAT diet - Bananas (mashed or small chunks), Rice (cereal or pudding might be better for him since he's young), Applesauce, and Toast (no butter).

Also, something I didn't see mentioned yet - yogurt that contains acidophilus.

Do NOT give apple juice- this can make the poop very acidic and can cause diaper rash.

My son has had stomach bugs that have lasted anywhere from 2 to 10 days, usually somewhere in the middle. It totally sucks. I hope it stops soon!

You could always move to the brat diet, Bananas rice apples toast. This works for our son. Also we give him something called Florastor available at any pharmacy, it is to promote intestinal health. The doctor recommends it when he is on medications that might cause diarhea. Good luck, I hope that it goes away soon.

This happened to my son after drinking some of Lake Michigan last summer. Give it 2 weeks. If it's still bad after that, take him in to see someone. It could be anything, and as long as he seems fine, just deal with the messy diapers and make sure he stays hydrated.

Please don't say Roto Virus-my little one had it for 9 days thanks to daycare. Still makes me angry. Keep your little one hydrated. Be careful as the whole family grandparents and all got it after we all tried taking care of him. Good luck. If it is at daycare they should post something in his room that everone has these syptoms. When ever my little guy has loose stools we give him regualar oatmeal and that seems to help. It could be teething but 6 days is kinda long. Good luck

Try yogurt or adding Probiotics for intestinal health available at Fruitful Yield, Whole Foods or Wild Oats. They make a powder form (or just open the capsule) and mix in his juice, cereal, etc. Yogurt and probiotics promote a strong immune system and intestinal health. Good for diarrhea, constipation and GERD. They work!!!!

My 14 mo daughter had the same stomach bug a few weeks ago but threw up a couple times. Was told to give her the BRAT diet and also it could take a few weeks for them to have "normal" stools b/c their digestive system is still immature compared to ours.

Give him a children's pro-biotic supplement. It works like a charm. There is a brand called Culterelle that is sold at CVS and is room temp. stable. You can mix it into any food. You can also check out your local healthfood store or Whole Foods/Wild Oats. Someone will be able to help you with this. Look for the culture S.Boulardii. It will work probably within 24 hours. Hope he feels better.

My Daughter had same thing early this year when she was 13 months. We moved our home and hence the day care. The new day care had rota virus in the air..she contracted it. With our move we probably were distracted too. So did not oay attention. She got dehydrated and we ended up in hospital for three days with IV on her foot.

whatever the case may be give plenty of fluids and pedialyte..DO NOT MISS IT.
