My 4 year old daughter has been complaining that her stomach hurts for 6 days now. The first day, an M&M seemed to cure her. the second day, she vomitted and was very weak and lethargic. She seemed better, so she went back to day care, but by that evening, she was throwing up again. Her appetite was fine and she wanted to eat. She would even pep up. Then she said her stomach hurt, and she would curl up in pain. So, I took her to the pediatrician. He said he was stumped. However, after her urine sample and his physicial exam, he did not think the problem was appendicitis or a bowel obstruction. He guessed it was a viral bug, but said the symptoms for that would only last 3 days. Sure enough, she was "cured" for two days. But, now she is throwing up again. Has anyone experienced this? Do I just monitor this or go back to the doctor who was stumped? She is hungry, using the bathroom and showing other positive signs.

What can I do next?

Yes, my daughters have been through it several times. I don't give them solid foods until the vomit stops. I usually keep Amoxicillin or Omnicef stocked up from previous times when they get sick and give them a little bit in the morning. If I don't have any, I just give them a little bit of Pept-Bismol and it does the trick. I keep them well hydrated with plenty of liquids such as Getorade. Ice-pops are also good. Sometimes, I feel sorry for not feeding them solids, but once they are well, I make up for it. If they get really hungry, I give them some crackers or apple sauce, or a little bit of soup. If I follow these steps it usually last only 24 hours and it doesn't come back, but it took me a while to get the hang of it.

This happened to us for six months last year before we discovered my sons milk allergy. They can do a simple blood test to determine if that is the problem. If it continues, you may want to consider it.

My 4 yr old nephew just had the stumic flu. As long as she is eating, drinking and playing you just have to wait it out. It could last a while. I wouldnt let her play too hard or eat and drink too much. Give her the usual starches and lay low on the dairy and suger.

Hope she gets better soon,

My husband had it (fever, vomiting & diarrhea); a week later both of my daughters had it (fever, vomiting & diarrhea) for 4 days; then a week later I had it (just diarrhea). The next week, my 2 year old woke up and vomited every 15 minutes for 3 hours and was fine the next morning; my 3 year old was fine until she vomited on Wednesday night and then was perfectly fine right after that. Yesterday my 2 year old had fever & she vomited once this morning, but now she's fine once again!

They don't go to daycare or anything, but it seems everyone has it. My doctor did say if it happens again to bring them in for a stool sample. Still, it is just a bug (or that's what they have) and apparently everyone is passing it around. Just keep her hydrated & keep a close eye on her.

I seriously think every family I know has had this so I wouldn't worry, but if you are concerned take her to another doctor. I freaked out this morning when my 2 year old was vomiting again, but an hour later she was bouncing off the walls. Kids - they're nuts (and full of lovely germs)!

Hi! Hopefully your little girl is all better by the time you get this email, but if she's not, I would suggest she get tested for rotavirus. My 2 yr. old had it last year and she had to end up being hospitalized for severe dehydration. I am not trying to scare you, but would just recommend this test. It is a very contagious virus and can be very serious if it is not treated. My daughter was sick on and off for a week or two, had several dr. visits and finally she became very lethargic and was hardly talking or moving. Our dr. told us to take her to the ER immediatley. Sure enough, she was dangerously dehydrated from rotavirus and we were blessed that I knew enough to call the dr. It could have gotten very bad!! Good luck and God Bless!!

I would call your pedi and see what they think you should do. This has been going around this summer and the first go around it took my 4 year old daughter and husband almost a week to get over it completely but my son and I were okay within a day. We are on what I think is our second round of it right now and again it has seemed to hit my daughter the hardest. Right now my daughter is the same as yours fine one minute and then not so great the next. Fortunately this time our vomitting has only lasted one day but she's had the stomach ache, diarrhea, and blah appetite since Friday. Something to consider too is the possibility that it could be allergy related. I know everyone is having problems with allergies right now and sometimes with my kids the drainage from their sinuses gets into their empty bellies and upsets them. If your pedi says its okay maybe try some Benadryl it will help with any drainage and settle upset stomachs (my pedi told me this and noone has seemed to know about it but it helped my daughter the last time when she was vomitting every 10 minutes for 6 hours and also helps her motion sickness)
