Has Anyone Redone a Bathtub on a Budget?

Hi,
When we moved into our house, I started scrubbing the bathtubs and much to my horror, paint started peeling off of the bathtubs and surround. The previous owners had "painted" the tub and surround to sell the house. Now we have two shoddy bathtubs and tile work that need to be redone. I would like to take the high road and do it right, and replace the tub and get new tile done. We are thinking of having a plumber install a new tub and doing the tile ourselves. Has anyone had this done or done it yourself? Would like to spend $1000-1500 max per bathroom. Not sure how reasonable that is, but I know tubs are like $200-300 each. We have remodeled our whole house almost entirely by ourselves, and this is really the last major project we have to do.

What can I do next?

I have a lot of rental property. I have a handyman/painter/carpenter that has worked with me for at least a decade. He would need to look at the place and price the tile, but I believe he has told me that a tub can be changed out for around $1,200. His name is Rudy Riddle and his number is ###-###-####.

Hey girls -

I can only tell you our experience and I hope others share - I'd be interested to see the results.

We had to re-do our shower within a month of moving in due to the tiles falling off the wall!!! We don't have a tub in our bathroom - that saved us!! I have looked because we have to re-do the other soon also (same reason as you)! a nice tub - deep with jets...can run you! $600 + !!!!! We took ours down to the 2x4's and built up. I would have to say you're budget can be done! I'd have to look back on receipts - but no problem - I'm sure of that!
Good Luck!
