Halloween Trick-or-treating

In years past we have never done regular trick-or-treating (we just went to places like the Zoo Boo & city/business trick-or-treating), because we lived in an apartment complex. So this year we bought a house, and we live in a neighborhood that seems like it would be trick-or-treating friendly. But I have no idea what to expect, both for our own trick-or-treating experience, and for greeting other trick-or-treaters. Like, how much candy do I buy? And with Halloween being a Saturday this year, should I expect kids during the day, or would people still just do it in the evening? I have no idea if my town has a designated trick-or-treating time (I live in Westland, in case anyone else knows!).
Thanks for any help or advice!

Most communities run trick or treating from 5:30-7:30 or 6:00-8:00. Call your local police dept or city hall to confirm the time in your city. I'm in Wyandotte myself. Here's a good reason to get to know your neighbors better. Ask a few of them how much candy they usually buy. I base my purchase on the predicted weather for the evening and sometimes the day of the week Halloween falls on. If the weather is going to be good I get a little more than usual. The weather Sat. for metro Detroit area is expected to be 60 degrees, mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers. Have a fun and safe evening.

Hi C., This is the perfect time to get to know some of your neighbors! I would ask one or a few of them what has happened in the past. Being that they were there before you they should know what goes on. We made a mistake once and didn't ask anyone (this was in OH) and didn't have candy waiting. I was going to get it the day of. Well, for some reason our city did it the night before! So emberassing...so, this year (we just got a house too) I have met my neighbors and feel I am prepared for the big night.

Good luck and Happy Halloween!

Hi C.,
I know my neighborhood well and know most of the kids and how much to buy so I would talk to a neighbor. We usually get the neighborhood kids early and then we have a BUNCH of people that trick or treat from their cars which I don't really like. I'm not sure the reasoning behind driving down the street with the kids. If you don't have a nice neighborhood I get going to one that is nice but then get out of the car and walk. It makes for a dangerous situation with cars and kids. So I usually turn my lights off after the neighborhood kids come through. Have a safe fun Halloween.

If it's anything like my neighborhood trick or treating will start any time from 5.30 on. I normally buy a lot of candy - three big bags because we get a lot of kids. I normally leave my husband at home to hand out candy - make sure your house is well lit - and I take the kids trick or treating. We normally go straight after dinner, around 6pm. I think I enjoy it as much as the kids! If you run out of candy, turn out the lights so the kids don't don't come to your house. (You could also give out bags of chips if you run out). Have a fun evening - Alison

C.,

Give your city offices a call to find out when trick-or-treating is supposed to start and end. This will give you a good idea of when you need to be ready.

When our son was around that age we took him trick-or-treating around the block and when he became tired of walking, let him hand out candy to the kids. He loved seeing the different costumes and had a great time handing the candy to everyone. It was a great way to meet those in our neighborhood. =)

Have fun this year!

Definitely ask your neighbors what the tradition is. If you have a lot of kids come around, then you need a lot of candy and only give one piece each, if not a lot of kids come around (we only get 20) then you can buy the good stuff or large bars from sams club. (I buy 6 bags of hersheys and mms etc and give out a handful to each kid).

This is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors. Go to the door with your daughter, introduce yourself, tell them where you live and thank them and let them know you are looking forward to being their neighbor, or something like that. Build your community, it will help you and your daughter in the long run. I did this and now I have people that I can call if I need help with soemthing. Yes, I have even borrowed a cup of sugar (well, actually it was a teaspoon of baking powder).

Take your daughter out trick or treating. My four grown children have fond memories of this holiday, and going door to door. The neighbors looked forward to seeing the children. Usually trick or treating begins at 5:30pm or 6pm. and is over by 8pm. Of course your child will poop out sooner and that is ok. Only go up to houses with porch lights on. This indicates williness to participate in Halloween

Call your local newspaper or chamber of commerce to find out when Trick or Treating is.

You can't miss the super size bags of candy at the stores. If you don't want to do candy, get a bag of pennies. Or apples.
You find out what time (usually around 5 p.m. hour, maybe earlier), take your kids for a walk around the block or two and they go to houses with pumpkins lit up or follow the crowd.

Hi there!

I grew up in WEstland and my parents still live there. On a nice night they can get up to 250 kids at their house. It may be different in different neighborhoods, though. I would ask a few neighbors (would be a good icereaker if you don't knowthem yet :) and see what they typically get. IF need be you can always turn off your light when you run out.

I doubt you wil have kids during the day. I think most will proabably not start until 5 or 6. Some cities set certain times for handing out candy. CHeck to see.

Have fun!!!

I live in Westland, too and even when Halloween has been on the weekend, I have never had kids trick-or-treat during the day. I'm sure they will still come at night. Don't know what neighborhood you are in...but I have full size candy bars for 60 kids. (I have had anywhere from 50-100 kids in the 15 years I have lived there). As a back-up, I buy (at Costco) a big box of salty snacks...this year I chose small bags of Chex Mix. If I run out of candy, I switch to the Chex Mix. If I don't get rid of all of it...I can put it in my kids lunches. That way...I don't end up with a bunch of leftover candy that my family will just want to eat! Another thing I have done is put a sticker on the bottom of one candy bar and whichever trick-or-treater gets it..."wins" a whole bag of candy (you can get them cheap at CVS this week). The kids get a thrill from that! Last year, the littlest girl in a family got the sticker (she was about 4) and her older brothers were trying to talk her into giving it to them before they even left my porch! Have fun with your first Halloween in a house!

Hey, ask one of your neighbors what the street/block/neighborhood tradition is.
On our block, we all sit out front with a little table. chair, (a glass of wine), our dogs, etc and hand out candy. The kids don't come to the door, but they still yell "trick or treat" (sometimes from the next house over), and we get to visit across the yards and street.

definately ask a neighbor, in my Westland neighborhood the little ones start between 5:30 and 6:30 depending on how dark it is, then by 8ish it is mostly the older ones that don't even want to bother to dress up (they don't get candy at my house), as for candy buy what you want to spend and then turn your porch light out when it is gone (the porch light is supposed to let the kids know what houses are handing out candy but not all of the big kids pay attention to the light), at 3 you will probably only do both sides of your block before she gets tired, have fun

The first year in our house we ran out of candy, and my father in law ran to the store to get more. i have noticed the years we decorate our house we get more trick or treaters, and the years we haven't there haven't been as many. i would think 2 to 3 big bags is usually what we get. trick or treating will still be the same time 6-8 usually but you can check with your city for sure.
