Getting Pregnant with PCOS

Hi everyone,

I have been trying to get pregnant with my second child for over a year now. I was diagnosed with PCOS with my first child and did fertility treatments for a year that didn't work. I ended up getting pregnant on my own by some miracle. Now with #2 I am back on the clomid, but haven't been able to ovulate. I recently read a lot about people on glugophage having success, and I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience with that. My blood sugar is normal except when I was pregnant. I had slight gestational diabetes then and was wondering if going on glugophage would be an option. Any other advice with PCOS would be great too.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the advise! I just found out I am pregnant after only one month on clomid (although my cycle was 60 days long)! I feel very lucky. I had tried for over a year by myself and was amazed that 1 dose of clomid did the trick. I think the biggest problem I had was not trying long enough during the month. Let's face it sex gets old after having to schedule it for 6-8 weeks at a time. This month I kept "at it" haha and it worked. Good Luck to everyone trying!

I also have PCOS and am about to have my fourth baby. For years between my #1 and #2, I was told I wouldnt never get pregnant on my own, and either get fertility treatments or be happy with my son. It was the hardest thing to hear, but here are somethings I have learned since #2 was born. I dont ovulate at 14 days, instead I ovulate much later, my #3 due date was 41 weeks and 2 days after my last period, and #4 is 41 1/2 weeks after last period. IF you are overweight, which is common with PCOS, but not necessarily true for all who have it, then losing weight really helps, for me it was just a few points, not a major amount, but it very well could have been the extra exercising and eating more healthy then ever, especially watching the number of carbs I eat. (I do eat carbs, but I try to limit it to 2 carbs at breakfast, 1 for a snack, and 4 for lunch and 4 for supper. 1 carb=15 grams.) I was on glugophage when I got pregnant the second time, actose right before #3 and just got lucky when we got pregnant with #4. Also I stopped trying to get pregnant and just relaxed with everything. I know that all of us PCOS have different symtoms and different ovulations and so on, but these did work for me. Good Luck!

I also have PCOS and had two successful pregnancies. The first with the use of Glucaphage and clomid and the 2nd pregnancy with just the use of Glucaphage. Talk to your doctor about getting started on it. They usually will put you on with a diagnosis of PCOS because there has been so much success with it, in combo with clomid and without.
I used this website www.ovusoft.com when I was trying to get pregnant. There's a specific message board under communities just for gals with PCOS.
Best of Luck dear

I had a friend who has PCOS get pregnant after 10-years by going on the Atkins diet. Her doctor said that the low-carb diet is what helped, but I don't know much more than that.

Good luck getting pregnant again!

Have you heard of IVillage? I know you may think this is weird advice but they have a million different message boards. I've had 4 miscarriages and after my last i went on there for support and there are boards just for misscarriage and loss, and yes one for TTC with PCOS.
The board will have tons of women on there who are trying to conceive with PCOS and you can talk about options and what they are doing etc etc. It might be a huge help.
Those boards have been to me on several occasions.
Good luck. I know some of us just have such a hard time getting our babies here. huggs** to you.

I also have PCOS and tried Metformin to help regualte my periods & to pinpont my ovulation.

It also had the wonderful side effect of helping me lose weight. This helped me even more in my quest to get pregnant. We did not conceive until after several years of trying on Metformin, Clomid & doing IUI. But I beleive this was mostly due to stress. After my husband & I both changed jobs (and had quite trying) we conceived. We now have a very active 2 year old boy.

Losing weight can have the same effect as taking metformin or Glucophage. The fat excess fat on our bodies (especially around the waist) is where excesshormones are absorbed. This is what caused the insulin imbalance which in turn causes the PCOS.

If you are comfortable with it start taking the Glucophage, it seems to help curb the cravings we have for carbs (mostly processed sugars & "enriched" flours). Afer time if this does help you may not need the perscription any more to regulate your periods.

I know you will hear it again & again from well meaning people (who have never had trouble conceiving & do not know the stress & pain) but the best thing to do is relax as much as you can (with a 2 year old son, yeah funny I know). As person who understands & has been there I wish you the best of luck and if you want to talk more please let me know.

Congrats! I also have PCOS and have 4 children. I wasn't diagnosed until after my 2nd son was born. I ended up with an ovarian torsion. That's where the ovary (covered with cysts adding up to about the size of a small cantelope in my case) twists with the fallopian tube and is extremely excrutiating! I had my right ovary removed and was told that my left ovary was cystic as well, but at the age of 25, they were going to leave it alone so as to not put me into menopause. I was also put on Glucophage and had good results. My second pregnancy was very difficult so we waited almost 5 years before trying for #3. Also, I had lost weight, so it made it easier to conceive as I felt more sexy and confident as well. I had my IUD removed August 1, 2003 and had a +HPT by the end of that month. With our 4th, I had lost a considerable amount of weight due to a lap band and again became pregnant with only one month of TTC. We are contemplating #5, but I'm totally scared of having another boy! I already have 4 of the little buggers!

I wish you all the best for a healthy pregnancy.

HI! i too have PCOS and a very severe form! the amazing thing is....i have a 3 month old son that i became pregnant with, while on birth control!! after years of the doctors telling me that when i did choose to get pregnant it would be nearly impossible due to the amount of Cysts on my ovaries and uterus! when i missed the first period i have missed since i started on yasmin, i didn't think much of it, i thought it could have been due to PCOS.....but then i started having pregnancy symptoms! i took 6 home pregnancies and a blood test b4 i believed it! my fiance and i were taken by complete surprise and were sooooo very excited!!
anywayz...i'm telling you this to let you know that once you relax and let God do his handywork....miracles do happen....as i'm sure you realize with your 1st child. it was after the treatments when you became pregnant. just relax and if your are religous i would give it to God and stop stressing out about not being able to get pregnant. stress has been proven to effect the ovulation process with PCOS. kind of the same way that it has been proven to make it hard for women to lose weight when they are stressed out.
miracles do happen! i'm sure that it will happen if it is meant to happen!
GOOD LUCK :)
