Freezing Breastmilk

I have been freezing breastmilk in my basement deep freezer (3-4 degrees F) just to store it up to have on hand for my baby girl. I feel like when I thaw it it smells a little weird. Maddie drinks it, so it can't be sour, right? But there are little white particles floating in it and then the smell is weird. When I smeel my newly pumped milk it doesn't smell like anything, so why does this frozen milk smell? I pump and freeze in Lanisoh bags, freeze, store and thaw according to package instructions...a friend told me that my baby wouldn't drink it if it was bad...please someone set my mind at ease! Thank you!

What can I do next?

It's normal for it to smell a little "soapy" and the fat freezes so the white stuff will float a little. As long as it doesn't smell like "Bad' Sour milk, it's fine. Check the LaLeche League website. Even thought they are a little militant. There's an answer to most questions. Also, There's a great book called the "Nursing mothers Companion and The Nursing Mothers COmpanion A-Z"

I froze a whole freezer full of milk with my first child. He would not touch the stuff...he hated it. It was just as you described so I'm not sure why the gross smell. The second time around I only froze a little bit and my daughter wouldn't touch it either!! I wish the lactation consultants would have addressed that, because when I asked them they said they have never heard of it.

I'm glad she's at least drinking it.

I found that the milk 'seperates' after sitting for a while like that. Just give it a good shake to mix it up...it's fine. As for the smell, not sure. Could be like the other mom said, from the plastic, or just because it isn't newly expressed. I would not worry about it one minute. She is drinking it...it's fine.

Don't worry, it is perfectly normal. I breast fed three kids and had the exact same thing happen. It's just the fat in the milk separating from the liquid. There is nothing wrong with the milk. Good for you for breast feeding!

No worries - those white particles are fat - think of it as the cream layer. And your friend is right - a baby won't drink anything that doesn't smell right to them.

What does it smell like? Sour, plastic, something else from the freezer leaking a smell, or like a different kind of milk or something....
When I froze too I had the little white particles floating around in it also after doing just as the instructions would say. I'm thinking that's just normal. My sons drank it fine after freezing too, though it definitely looked better just after pumping. :)
My guess is it is fine and just a little different from the freezing and unfreezing process.

I also noticed a different smell to my frozen milk. I tried both Lanisoh and Medela bags, and it made no difference. I agree with your friend about your baby not drinking it if was bad because I once had some milk that I guess went bad and my son wouldn't drink it. I've also made my husband test the milks...maybe gross, but I told him he was doing it for our son.

I had the same thing sometimes.....the particles are fat in the milk and the smell....I had read somewhere that some women release a hormone? something that can make the milk smell "spoiled" As long as she is drinking the milk...I wouldn't worry.

The little white particles are the fat that has separated. Not a big deal, just shake it up to mix it in. As far as smell, perhaps it has picked up an odor from something else in the freezer? Or possibly the plastic bags you are storing the milk in? Not sure on that one...
