Our twins are 3 months and we are giong on their first lengthy roadtrip, leaving in the morning. The trip takes about 7 hours without making many stops, so we're figuring a little longer with them. I'm completely freaking out about everything from whether I packed enough diapers, clothes formula for them and wondering how they're gonna accept being in the truck for that long. OUr 4 year old started traveling at 6 weeks and still travels well. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance and maybe some tips from moms who have done this.. Thank you!!!

So What Happened?

Well, we all lived!!! It wasn't too bad and we had plenty of everything. They actually slept a little better there than they do at home, I just don't get it. Thanks for all of the suggestions!!!

We lived in France when my two youngest were babies. We did a long road trip to Ireland, England, and Wales with ferry crossings when one was 19 months and one 3 months. There are diapers everywhere if you run low. I'll bet there is formula too. Play music they like in the car. They'll probably sleep a lot anyway with the motion. They'll probably adjust very well. We even did well with transatlantic flights and jet lag...well the kids did. Mom and Dad not so much.
Enjoy!

I agree with earlier...go earlier or even tonight that way they will sleep thru most of it. We traveled to PHX quite a few times with my kids and we would leave around 6 and by the time they woke up you were almost there!!
Also if you drive during the day and they sleep while riding in the car you might change their sleeping schedule and they will be up all night. I wouldnt worry about diapers and formula-Walmart is Everywhere!!

Unless you are posting this from the middle of some third world country a seven hour drive is not going to take you out of civilization. There will be a Wal Mart in every small town you drive through. If you are in Texas it can take you 7 hours just to get across the state so you know you own't be far from a Walmart! We've traveled with all of our kids starting at three months or so and as long as you are relaxed and go with the flow, they will too.

At 3 months the babies are still sleeping a lot. If they are asleep, keep driving!!! Try leaving early in the morning, right after feeding and changing the babies, and taking the older child potty. That way you will have peace and quiet for 3+ hours...all your kids will sleep! :)

We pack far less than we used to for babies when we go places...don't know where you are going, but usually we can count on Wal-mart and washaterias for anything we might run out of and for clean clothes.

We leave early, I mean between 2 and 4 in the morning and can get at least 5-7 hours under our belts before stopping for breakfast...go with babies' sleep patterns if they have any and you will be happier. This is for a trip that you are driving straight through...otherwise for older children get a good stretch in while they sleep, then make stops, play a little (playscapes, museums and swim holes)to get their energy out, and enjoy the journey...sometimes there's no doing this and you might as well make as much ground as possible. Have fun!

Take some extra munchies and drinks for the 4 year old and you and hubby, too. Saves money and time stopping except for gas and potty breaks. A portable DVD player is nice, if you have one. It will help pass the time for the 4 yr old with several different kiddo movies. The babies will probably sleep most of the trip. Don't foret fav blankies or lovies! I would not count on Walmart being everywhere because they AREN'T! Bring your own diapers, wipes etc AND plastic bags for poopie diapers! and keep a few within quick reach. Like one Mom suggested, bring a gallon of water (in a jug with a twist off lid for less spillage) and bottles prefilled with powdered formula for "instant bottles". I'd buy a LARGE can of powdered formula or two for the trip, so you don't run out and have to hunt for it somewhere and be ripped off for higher prices. You can always bring a large black, plastic trash bag for dirty clothes, too, towards the end of your trip. You can just wash them when you get home. Bring some extra cash in 10's and 20's because many places don't take large bills- 50 or 100 and some don't take credit or debit cards. Might divide it between you and hubby and leave a cash stash in the bottom of the diaper bag in case a wallet "gets lifted". Don't bring extra credit cards etc you might not need. Keep your purse contents to a minimum. I am sure the trip will be fine and take a camera for lots of family memories! Good luck!

T., if your babies are like most that young, they will sleep from the ride. Most infants enjoy the rocking or moving sensation in the car & sleep from it. I carried a gallon of nursery water to mix their powered formula in in, and had the formula pre-measured in several bottles to speed the process of making their bottles. (I have two sets of twins)One thing for sure, if you run out of diapers you can stop & pick up more. (i forgot mine one time!!) I had the ones in the diaper bag but left the box of extra ones, I was so panicked over having everything I forgot to bring them down to the pile of suitcases & other things that were to be loaded in car, that we were carrying on the trip.
You'll be fine & hopefully they will too. Enjoy your trip :)

T., you know you children better than anyone and if you have planned this trip, you must be pretty sure the little ones can handle it. You will be stopping to feed and diaper the babies, give them hugs and kisses just as you do at home, be sure they are burped, maybe give them a little back rub, be sure everything is comfy in the car seat, and they should be fine. As for the things you may have forgotten, I doubt you will go more than 20 miles without passing a WalMart where you can pick up what you need. Right now, I hope you are getting the worry free rest you need for the day ahead of you. Our granddaughter has boy/girl twins who celebrated their first birthday last week. One thing I noticed is how much they enjoyed smiling faces talking to them. Their older sister was as good at it as their mom and dad were. If you don't already know about KMFA, 89.5 on your radio dial, you might try that for the calming effect of classical music or play your favorite CDs, or read to the four-year-old and the babies will enjoy it, too. I hope you have a calm, happy, safe trip. Oh, yes, there are always wash-a-terias if you need to run a load or two somewhere along the way. On trips for our family of five, we never took more than three days clothing for each. We camped throughout Colorado and could always find a nice place to wash and dry clothing, bedding and towels while we met other travelers and shared stories. Fun!

Relax, T.... the trip itself will be stressful enough. So what if you dont have enough diapers? There are stores that will have more... Your son will have a chance to help you out too, playing the protective big brother and help entertain if necessary. Have fun, but relax!!

if you dont have enough you can always buy some. count out how many they use a day and double it for both of them. ( for on the way up and back ) if you have a dvd player take it along with the charger and lots of kids movies. kids tend to sleep alot in the car so sleep when they do because your likely to be awake all night. good luck. hope it goes great for you.

My biggest piece of advice. Relax and go with the flow. Remember, if you forget anything, you can pretty much get anything you would need at a store. I know 7 hours seems like a long time, but I bet they sleep for at least half of that. I'm happy for you that you are attempting. A lot of parents of infant twins are afraid at first to make any big trips. You will be happy you did it!

Just remember that there are stores along the way and you can always stop and get what you forgot. That keeps me reassured. They should mostly sleep for you. Take advantage of that and drive!

The one thing that has always worked for us it to drive at night. We give the kids dinner, a bath, then we load them up and they usually sleep all night! It isn't that bad to drive through if you and your hubby switch..we got a 12 hr trip done very easily this way with our 3yr old and 8mo old. Good luck!

Relax. If you need more diapers, clothes, or formula I am sure where you'll be will have a store you can visit to re-stock. Yes, it will probably take longer than the normal amount of time. Don't get overly stressed if it takes even longer than you thought it should. My other suggestion is to bring along some Tylenol/Motrin that is easy to get to during the drive. If the babies get a little restless, give them a small dose to help calm them down. It can also help ease any soreness they may have from the drive and being stuck in their car seats for that amount of time.
