my usually super active four year old woke up last night crying and sweaty HOT..the thermometer only read 99+ but his whole body was steaming and he's complaining of a headache(always scary to me)..we called off all plans for the day and laid low but he's so lethargic and the fever is lingering..not ever above 100 but his body is so hot to touch..he's resisting even a frozen juice popscicle or cool bath..do you starve a fever or feed the cold?? i can't remember..mama intuition says let my strong boy work through it but suffering is AWFUL..any suggestions to help comfort??

What can I do next?

Hi,
{{hugs}} to you, I know this is a scary time for you, as it is for all mommies with sick kids, but I would say as long as his fever is not going over 100 (or even if he does, no higher than 102) then he is alright! just make sure to keep as much liquids as he'll drink going thru him so he doesn't get dehydrated (one way to tell he's dehydrated is he stops going potty) and give him some children's fever reducer. other than that there isn't much else you can do.
if your really concerned contact your pediatrician, but from what you are saying he would probably tell you the same thing as I've said.

good luck, and hang in there!

S.,
Sorry your little one isn't feeling well. I would call the Doctor this morning and ask if they have seen kids coming in with any of your son's symptoms and advise if he should be seen. I would also wonder if your thermometer is working properly cause if you say he is so hot to touch that makes me think his fever is higher than what it is reading. I know when my daughter had a fever of 101.5 it felt like I had a heating pad up agains't my body (she had a real bad ear infection), but when she had a 99.1 temp after the MMR shot she did not feel so hot only warmer than usual.

Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.

We just feel terrible when our children are sick. Ask if your son's throat hurts and look at his throat. My 4 yr old daughter did not complain of a sore throat. She has tonsilitis. My 8yr. old daughter has a terribly painful headache. The Doc. said she has strep throat. With strep throat you get very painful headaches and stomach pain too. You can also get scarlett fever if not treated soon enough. That is what happened this week with my oldest. She did not tell me what was going on until I felt her head Monday night when I put her to bed. She did not want to say anything because she did not want to miss school or soccer practices. Good luck. C.

Hi S.,

So sorry your child is not feeling well. My son went through the same thing a few weeks ago. First question....are you using a digital or oral thermometer because my digital was running low on battery and wasn't giving the correct temp when I took it. I went to Walgreens and bought my son a packet of those cooling patches that you peel and stick across his forehead or the back of the neck. That really worked for him and instantly....I MEAN INSTANTLY.....he felt so much better. I also was going back and forth between Children's Tylenol and Children's Motrin every 4 hours and that broke the temp fast and kept it away so he had a much more comfortable night. Give him plenty of liquids and try soup if he likes it. My son loves the Gatorade when he's sick. I tried giving him the Pedialite and he acually threw it up because it is WAY TOO SALTY. I hope some of these tactics work for you and if he's not better or see some sort of relief I would call his dr. just incase. Good Luck and I hope he feels better.
