Fertility Treatment Question

We have been undergoing fertility treatments for some months now and finally this last month decided to try the IUI. Dr. Le, my doctor gave me prometrium to delay my body from starting my menses too early to give the egg time to implant if indeed the procedure was successful. My first question is when will I start my period if I am not pregnant? How long after the last prometrium is the norm? Also has anyone had success witht he IUI and how many months did it take? We got pregnant with our son very quickly, and a year later we got pregnant again very quickly with a baby we lost at 13 weeks which was very hard for us. My body has not been right since my miscarriage and I have pregnancy symptoms every month before I start my period. I know how incredibly lucky we are and I am very appreciative. However, we sure would love having another baby!

What can I do next?

So sorry about your miscarriage. I used to work for Dr. Le. He is a great R.E.
The prometrium protects your uterine lining and makes a nice lush landing spot for the embryo. Usually, you won't have a period until you stop the meds. If your pregnancy test is positive, you will stay on the prometrium for about 12 weeks. If you're not pregnant, you will stop the meds and have a period.
Hope this helps. S.

I miscarried 2 weeks ago and had been put on prometrium (after finding out things weren't going well)..I started bleeding about 5 days after using the last one.
I realize many women love Dr Le but I had a ver bad experience with him that went from me helping others have families (I was a surrogate and egg donor) to infertile and having to seek help for ourselves to have another baby. I had minor scarring from past c-sections and a tiny fibroid. Went into surgery for Dr Le to remove it. In recovery he said there was only 30% of the scarring he expected to see but while in there he went ahead adn scraped all over. Assuming it would all slough off and regrow nicely. Instead it cause scarring all over and is what caused our recent loss. Another friend of mine has been using Dr Le as well for IUI's..they've so far been unsuccessful but I thought it was odd she said he barely monitorwws her during her cycles and rarely does bloodwork. When I did my IVF cycles for surrogacy and my egg donations I was in with my other Dr's every day to at least every 3 days for close monitoring.
I use Dr Zwernamann for my ob/gyn and Dr Kaufmann is my RE..they are both wonderful!!

Hi R.- Sorry about your loss and that you have been dealing with infertility. My DH and I had been trying for almost a year with no success to conceive #2. We had tried Clomid on a few cycles and learned I was Clomid resistant. We had an appt with Dr. Kaufmann (whom I heard can get an acorn pregnant!) on 9/4 and on 9/3 we learned we had conceived on our own! I'm 7wks 3days and am also on Prometrium since my progesterone was low in my first set of labs.

With that said, I've known some friends who have had IUIs done and most will test 12days past IUI to see if they are pregnant. Most dr.s will order a beta test around that time as well to see if it worked. I've known some people who conceived the first time they tried the IUI and I've known others who are on number 4 & 5. It's such a stressful journey, but know you are not alone. I know of a WONDERFUL site with many helpful and supportive women if you're interested! Let me know via PM! Best of luck!!

I can't remember the specifics .. but let me tell you that you have an incredible doctor. I went to Dr. Le as well and went through 7 IUI's without success. Dr. Le then sent me to Dallas to another doctor because he knew that their laboratory was better for IVF... he could have done the job but he wanted me to be successful. I must say that it was before he built his big building. IVF was unsuccessful for me as well. However, after 9 years I did conceive a healthy baby boy on my own. He is 15 months old. Just keep praying and know that you are in good hands. Dr. Le is an awesome doctor.

YOu might try accupuncture. Recent research shows it's one of the most effective fertility treatments and can be used in conjunction with other infertility treatments to improve the efficacy.

Also, per my usual response, celiac or gluten intolerance can contribute to fertility issues and miscarriages - due to lack of absorption of key nutrients. It is far more common than most docs know and since the treatment is just a diet change, the docs just aren't trained nor educated in their continuing education courses, which are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies.

Also, I'm not sure about pregnancy symptoms - are you sure that's not just PMS. I honestly found that having no symptoms around my period was a sign of pregnancy, followed a few weeks later by an increase in breast size.

I went thru many years of infertility treatments before I finally gave birth to my daughter and I also was prescribed Prometrium after each IUI (and later after each IVF transfer) and I found that my period usually started within 3 to 4 days after the last one was taken. Good luck!

Hi R.. First I want to tell you I am so sorry for the loss of your second baby. We had a very similar situation to yours...no trouble with the first baby (he is almost 4yrs) and got pregnant quickly with the second...only to lose the baby at 9 wks.
We went to Dr. Le also. We did not do IUI, but just clomid, prometrium & progesterone & heparin injections (b/c I had 3 miscarriages). I am now 6 1/2 months pregnant and doing well. I will tell you that Dr. Le is wonderful about answering questions on e-mail...so you might just send those questions to him. I always have appreciated that he did not seem to mind answering any question I had. One of my best friends also went to Dr. Le...she and her husband had been working with another fertility Dr. for a year with no success. After only two attempts with Dr. Le using IUI they were pregnant and have healthy twin boys.
I also wanted to let you know that I am a part of a support group called Hannah. We meet every other Tuesday evening and pray for women who are struggling with infertilty issues and or miscarriage. Please let me know if you are interested.
Blessings!
S.
