Feeling "Normal" After C-section

Hi!
Just curious if what I am feeling is "normal." My daughter is 16 months old and she arrived (God bless her) via C-section. The site of the incision is still itching me like crazy! I will admit it has gotten better, but still itches. Also, I still have a lot of tenderness in my lower abdomen. It is tender to the touch. I have been told by 2 Dr.'s that all seems ok (2 Doctors only because I have moved to a different state, not because I didn't believe the first one).

Has this happened with anyone else? Will I ever feel "normal" again? Help!
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have had 3 c-sections. Each one healed differently so there is no set answer. I can say that the numbness did not wear off for me for at elast a year. Once the numbness started wearing off the itching kicked in. Your body may be slow to regain the feeling liek mine so that may be why you are still feeling like this. Even though this may be normal I would still bring it up to your doctor. Does it feel hot to the touch? If so you may have an infection inside under the incision. That happened to me with #2. The home health nurse removed my staples and tht night I was in the ER after the incision burst open due to an infection. I don't know what kind of underwear you wear but I found that bikini cuts hit the incision just right to irritate it. Just a thought. Good luck and congrats!

Hi L.!

First.....CONGRATS on your baby girl. I had an emergency c-section about 14 weeks ago. They cut me up and down instead of from side to side because I had passed out and they needed to get the baby out so I may not be the best one to answer this but I would insist that your doctor do a little more probing. I have no itching anymore but I do feel tenderness there when I laugh too hard or pick up something heavy. Other then that I feel pretty much back to my normal self. Everyone heals differently though so it could just be that it's taking you a bit longer. Keep an eye on it and maybe visit another doctor in a month or so if your still having issues. I can't imagine that it would be normal for it to be that tender still.

Good luck!

Hello,
I'm only 9 months postpartum and was still having a LOT of discomfort everyday before deciding enough was enough (doctors also told me it was all fine), and went to an acupuncturist to see if there was a less invasive way to help me heal. I've been going the last few weeks and I must say the change has been dramatic and I don't feel like I am feeling my ovaries all day long anymore! The scar is still itchy and numb in areas, but at least I don't feel crampy all the time anymore, and that area is not as sensitive. I also noticed that it's worse when I ovulate and following that until I get my period, so now I try to plan accordingly (scheduling acupuncture appts, taking herbal supplements and just relaxing, since exercising seems to make it worse right at that time).
Hope that helps- it's comforting to me to know that at 16 months postpartum I may still have some grief and it's okay!

Many women report side effects like this after c-section. Usually it seems to be about a year that women begin to feel like normal. Although it doesn't seem like you have really unusual complaints, I would definitely investigate further- your complaints are valid and deserve to be addressed.

I believe and hope that you will feel better soon- and you should pursue this as much as you need to to get the relief you deserve. Also, consider Vaginal Birth after Cesarean for future children you may choose to have to avoid more issues with scarring, etc. Good luck to you.

I had my first baby, 16 month old girl by c-section as well! I started to feel normal after about 4 months, although I still do experience itching on my scar every once and awhile. I would say that if you aren't feeling good, you should seek out medical attention or a second opinion. I know that excercise and an active lifestyle has helped me greatly in getting back to "normal", but I understand that it might be difficult to be that active if you uncomfortable or in pain. Hang in there!

I remember it taking a LONG time with my first, but it was kinda overshadowed by my second as they are 19 months apart, so I was pregnant again at the point you are at. It was still very tender and itchy, but part of that may have been the expanding skin again. I wanted natural for the second, but needed another c-section (both babies were breech), but after the second, I have to say I felt "normal" again real quickly. Pretty normal by the time I left the hospital, so I had to continually remind myself not to do too much after the surgery. It was a night and day difference between the two recoveries. So that's to encourage if you do plan to have another and end up needing another c-section. There's still tenderness just if I run into the counter or something, but that's just because it is scar tissue, it wasn't a constant bother after the second as it was after the first. It sure did FEEL like I would NEVER be back to normal after the first.

Mine feels fine. It took about 6 months to have the normal feeling for me. My issue was it feeling numb over the incision line. If you don't feel right I would get a 2nd opinion. I do have tenderness to the touch but I also have a fibroid

Hi, I had a c-section with my daughter and was taking walks with her at two weeks and felt back to normal in a month or so. For my son (found out we were pregnant with him when my daughter was 7 months old), I had a 2nd C-section. He was breach, I have type 1 diabetes (juvenile) and so that's why I had a second c-section. For this one, when they started to take the staples out in the hospital, the insision ripped back open. Unfortunately, I wasn't numb in that area so I felt a lot of pain. It took a good two months for the incision to completely close up, however, after that, a felt normal within a couple of months after it closed. I have heard that it takes a while with some women - that some feel numb or tender for 6 months to a year. It doesn't sound like it's normal to have your symptoms for as long as you had. It's sad, but it seems like after you have the baby, they want to just brush you off - I would get another opinion from a different doctor. Tell them up front that you want some answers.

Good luck. Hope you find a good doctor who takes the time to listen!!!

completely normal...
how long has it been since delivery?
I swear it was 6 months before I started feeling "normal" again after my emergency c-section. the first 3 months postpardum I felt weak with no core strenth at all. I started doing some very basic yoga at home and that really really helped. I remember not being able to get up out of a chair without being in major discomfort. it was horrible. but it does get better over time. try to walk outside as much as possible to build your strength too.
my incision still gets itchy occasionally and that part of my belly will never look or feel the same as before. it's smooshy and soft underneath the cut.... no muscle tone at all (not that I"m some workout fanatic but still...)
give it some more time...
