Hi: My daughter is 10 years old and she has a little facial hair on her top lip. When she was in fourth grade (last year) the kids were asking her why she hair in her lip. She felt embarassed about it. I have facial hair but I am older, I can handle it, I don't want her to feel ackward around her clasmates because of it. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I have been waxing mine since I was very young- Now i'm 37, It isn't permanant but it's gone, and this is what a kid wants and eventually she will have it permanently removed when she is older or she can continue waxing. I own Moda Milano Hair Salon in the northwood plaza in Clearwater and my sister is an estetician and she does waxing and she has 4 daughters and she would make her feel very comfortable. She has waxed her daughters for years, they would probably do something behind her back. Its too embarassing to a kid.

When I was that age I had the same problem.
I used the sun-in spray. That you spray on the area and either use a blow dryer and heat it up or go in the sun for 15 minutes or so. It is all lemon based. You can get it at any grocery store.

Good luck.

I would plain and simply have it waxed....I know she's young but it is what it is and it will curb any further pain and suffering...I have facial hair too, don't care cause I shave it every day...lol....Such as life huh!

Why not go w/ lazer hair removal? why wait years to do it? my OB does it at bayview ob/gyn in st. pete. he prescribed numbing cream to put on an hour before. i don'thave facial hair, but had legs, arm pits, and bikini done.

not sure how to deal with it at such a young age, you want her to know it's ok to have hair, but just not custom or something. she shouldn't be self conscious, but kids are rude, huh.

i'm not for cosmetic surgery for kids, but talk with people who offer the service to see if they have young clients. just an idea, not really advice I guess, sorry. I'd do it on summer break so she doesn't see friends the next day if it is red for a day.

If you do anything at all I would just lighten it. If you start plucking or shaving it she will be stuck doing this the rest of her life. Also she may have a hormone problem causing the facial hairs.

I would also suggest Sally's bleaching kit or Jolen. She is 10 so it should be a good alternative for her as she'd sit still and you won't have to worry about her getting in her mouth or anything. I did not have the need to use it on my upper lip, but it did work great on the sideburn area.

I would take her to a reputable salon and have it waxed by a professional the first time. After that I would do it myself. I have two toddler girls and plan on showing them the way of the wax when it comes time for hair removal. I do not and will not mess with razors, creams or bleach~yeck!

Good Luck

Sally Hanson brand has a very easy to use cream bleach. It will make it the hair so light her friends at school won't even notice it. It just takes a few minutes at home and it is inexpensive too.

I use nair on my lip hair. I leave it on a few minutes then wipe it off. I have done this since I was in 8th grade, I'm 33 now. If you leave it on too long it will burn and leave a red mark for am hour or so. I have dark hair and the bleaching didn't work because the kids still saw the hair. Then when it grew out they saw the color change and made it worse. If she can stand waxing that is a good option. But again, in between waxings I use nair. Dab some on a q-tip and put it on then wipe off with a warm washcloth. Good luck.

As she is so young, I would possibly consult a dr. to see what he or she would advise. Kids can have very sensitive skin and you don't want to cause more problems then she already has.

Oh gosh do I feel her pain!!!! I was the same age when my hair growth (I'm Greek) was out of control!!! I actually started waxing at 12....but it was painful and I would sometimes break out on my upper lip...THAT was embarrassing. Then I tweezed...OUCH! Then I did the cream, red skin for days. I finally figured out that I could just CUT the hair off with tiny little scissors and that's what I do now! Easy peezy, and it takes 2 minutes! Best of luck!

What a sad world we live in that causes 10yr old girls to feel embarassed about lip hair that most women have. I know how she feels, I went trew the change early and being italian suffer from bad lip hair that has alway embarassed me. Check with the doctor first before you buy bleaches, nair, wax, plucking, because your daughter may have skin issues with those products. Birth control for a 10yr old is insane, and it will more then likely make it worse. I am on birth control and mine is darker and thinker now then it ever was. Try using lemon juice and a blow dryer, it will lighten it up, and tiny sizzors to trim it. They even make a hair lightener with lemon and alcohol in it thats a lot safer for a 10yr old then bith control, bleach or lazor hair removal. Good luck, and always reminder her she is beautiful just the way she is!

The doctor could put her on a form of birth control that balance her hormones, and in the mean time, I would recommend a gentle bleach specifically for facial hair.
When she's older, she can go and get it waxed.

When I was younger and had no knowledge of how to take care of this problem. I first learned about the bleaching, it was inexpensive and fit my budget of course. It always seemed to burn me no matter how short I put it on my lip, and it broke the sides of my face out so badly. It burned for a long time especially if I went out side during the summer when it was hot and humid. It was sooo embarassing! Then I learned much later about waxing. While it hurts at first...your lip does become adjusted to it and it becomes bearable. I have never went back to the bleach. Waxing takes the hair away completely. Depending on the hair on her lip bleaching may or may not hide it. It may just be light but still thick. I would start with the bleaching and then go for the waxing. Her self esteem should be much better. I know it was and still is very embarrassing for me. While waxing is expensive, I would and will take my daughter to have it done if it becomes a problem for her. Good luck..it's got to be so hard to have to worry about this when your daughter is only 10.

Many of my cousins had dark mustache. It can be removed permanently with electrolysis or laser. Laser is more expensive, electrolysis hurts a little. If your dentist is empathetic, he may be willing to give your daughter a little Novocaine before an electrolysis treatment. Either way, the hair is gone for good. I could be a nice Mother Daughter outing if you want to get yours done too.

I had the same problem when I was in school. We tried bleaching it but I had a reaction to it, so watch when you do those kinds of things. I had a really red upperlip for quite some time becase of it. I have resorted to having to wax mine. It does hurt a little, but such is life. Good luck with the issue.

I think that both bleaching and waxing are an option, but I think because she is so young I would try one of those finishing touch wands first.I have one made by Lumina... and it works really well. No chemicals, no pain, no smell! But, if not... I would go with one of the other options for sure. There is no reason for her to be embarressed at school over something you can easily do something about. I know you would probably rather not because she is so young, but kids can be cruel and if you can do something to make her more comfortable and secure than that's ok. Waxing and shaving are a normal thing for girls... make sure you tell her that. Maybe you guys could do it together to help her feel comfortable and special instead of embarressed. Good Luck.

I've checked the database of the Environmental Working Group to find out about the safety of the more "chemical" options. It appears that the facial hair bleaches are safer options than the waxes and depilatories.

You can check them yourself on the link below, if you wish. The higher the number the product is assigned, the more toxic it is.

Personally, I like the idea of just using some small scissors (Christy C's suggestion) for now, and see how that goes before resorting to more expensive, painful and poisonous options.
