Early Morning Screeching -- Is It a Phase?

Lately our 2-year-old has started this odd screeching crying when he wakes up in the morning. It isn't exactly crying, although he doesn't sound happy -- it's more like a loud, nasty whine. And it's intermittent -- it will happen for a few minutes, then he'll stop and talk to himself, maybe sing, and then go back to it, be quiet for a few minutes, screech some more... But when we go into his room he's usually sitting there happily in his crib.

Should we ignore it? (Or at least, pretend to ignore it?). Anyone else ever dealt with this or know what's causing it? We'd love for it to stop, but we'll settle for knowing it's a phase that will go away eventually.

Otherwise he's a content, relaxed kid with the occasional toddler meltdown. He's a pretty good sleeper and eater, and we put books in his crib when we go to sleep so he can read for a few minutes while the rest of the house is waking up. He's still in diapers, and a messy or wet diaper doesn't bother him in the least.

Thanks for your help!

It's normal, and it won't last long unless you run in to see him when he does it. Then it turns into a game for him, and he'll want to play it every time he thinks of it. He probably just figured out that he can make this really cool noise! If he wanted anything, he'd call for "Mommy" or "Daddy". Laugh it off, but not in front of him.

It's a phase. It WILL pass. It's great that he can entertain himself in the morning like that (except for the screeching part)!

Probably a phase. Both my kids went through a screeching phase in toddlerhood; I think they get psyched when they discover a new noise they can make. It's great that your son can entertain himself a bit!

definately ignore it. think all toddler's go through this at least once, if you come running, he'll learn that's what he needs to do to get your attention so avoid that

Totally sounds like a phase. He probably enjoys hearing himself screech and is just entertaining himself. My kids do random things like that and they last for a few weeks and then they're done! I woudn't worry, especially if he's perfectly happy when you check on him! Ignore it and it will go away...eventually! ;)

Would you want to be ignored?

Why would you even WANT to ignore your child and any signs/sounds that they're giving or making?

Go see what's up...and if it's nothing....then give him a hug and kiss to let him know mommy loves him.

Problem solved.
