Anyone's husband work in HVAC field? (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration). My husband was layed off several weeks ago and has decided to go back to school. He applied for the HVAC program. The field seems to have a good job outlook and there seems to be a lot of options career wise for people with HVAC license.
Any input would be appreciated!

One of my friends via Facebook lives in Michigan and is in HVAC - he LOVES it...he just got promoted... I would talk to a few of the companies around your area and see what they are in the need for in HVAC - there are many different things one can do...like the poster below is looking for refrigerant...
he could be more successful if he gets certified in a field that appears to be in high demand!

Hi...yes, my husband is in the HVAC field. He went to Lincoln Tech. and got a job right out of school. He was at that job for several years, then was offered a job at another company which he accepted. He was only there about 1 year. THen we moved and he got another job and has been there for almost 3 years. My point is that in our experience there have been job opportunities in that field. He used to work "in a van" as they say. He would travel from job to job and do mostly service calls. Occasionally there would be big installation jobs which he loved. He now works at the Federal Reserve Bank in NY as an HVAC engineer and only works in that building. He loves this. He likes that you become familiar with the building and can trouble shoot to fix problems before they become big issues. It is also a more stable job and has great benefits. It also pays pretty well. I can tell you that I am a teacher with a Master's degree and he is a HS grad who received his HVAC license and he makes twice (literally, twice) the amount I make!!! My friends husband works in HVAC and does well, but they do have to plan for slower winters. They live in Maryland about an hour from DC, so the home prices aren't as high, but the cost of living is still pretty steep and he does well enough for her to stay home with her 3 kids. It is long hours and be prepared for him to work weekends.
yeah. move to florida. my folks speant $300 just for a guy to tell them to cut their bushes around their unit!
I see ads all the time needing ppl w/HVAC certification. I think it'd be a really great field to go into. I'm sure that ppl will always need service for their heating, ventilation, etc. I'd say go for it!
I am a construction manager. We've been trying to hire an HVAC guy (with refrigeration experience) and it's very hard to find anyone who is qualified! I would recommend that he makes sure to study refrigeration; if he can do that then he can work on commercial OR residential accounts - he will be more versatile and will have a bigger paycheck. ;) Also, it's a better hedge against the slow winter months. Restaurant walk-in coolers and freezers break down just as often in the winter as they do in the summer.

my husband is a mechanical engineer and we are currently looking around the country for new jobs. Most of the engineering positions open are HVAC-related and the pay is very good
Well Troy isn't home yet but....
He is a programmer and system designer but the systems they design control air handlers and the like. He basically keeps computers going by monitoring the environmental systems. Not sure if the employment potential of the midwest will mean anything but I will get back to you.
Okay so I bugged the poor guy while he is exercising. What can I say, ADD, if I don't ask now I will forget.
He said yeah it is a good field. He said there are always openings for qualified people. The area he works in is Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, sometimes Arkansas and Kansas. In that area they are in need. :)
