Do You Think I Could Get Funding for Something like This? Where to Start?!

I have always, always had a soft spot in my heart for single mothers. I have always watched children for honest, hard working mothers who have no other options (I used to base my pay on their income, and they often couldn't afford to pay me for the first few weeks). I was a single mother myself, and I had NO help, so I know how scary and stressful things can get with no help and no light at the end of the tunnel. There were literally days when I thought my kids would be better off with someone else, but I REFUSED to let that happen. Now, I'm in a very comfortable place in my life, and one of my very close girlfriends just had her husband walk out on her and her family. She is thissuperclose to admitting herself to a mental hospital because the stress is physically making her sick. She is past her mental breaking point. I recently invited her and her children to stay the weekend with me for a 'mental health day'... she arrived bawling her eyes out, but left hopeful. I was able to put her situation in perspective for her and give her a list of jobs and apartments for rent in the area, broke it down to her so now she knows SHE *CAN DO THIS! Now, I really feel like this is the direction my life needs to take... helping others, single moms to be specific. I'd really like to look into starting a center, a type of halfway house if you will, to help mothers and their children get back on their feet, with good jobs, good school systems, and good homes. Sometimes women put themselves in bad situations; sometimes women can't help their situation, but all, for the sake of their children, deserve some love and support and guidance to help them better themselves, and their lives. Where would I even begin to look into funding for something like this??

probably the best thing to do is to think about where you where looking when you got the inspiration to do this in the first place.if you try to get government funding, you are also going to get government regulations and social workers
and at that would be like inviting a pack of hyenas to a giraffe picnic. think about doing a mental health day for group of single mothers, rather than one at a time and brainstorm a little and go from there

The world needs people like you. I am not sure how you could get funding but our town has a battered women shelter that was started by someone just like you. I hope you are able to do it. Good luck and God bless

What a great thing to do. Meet with score, they are free retired business people in your community that can help you with a business plan, maybe point you on how to get aid. Maybe a church can give you space? I would start w/score or a local community college business dept. You could also ask for donations from friends while your setting up a legit business. Good luck!

I feel the same way as you! There are so many ways to help for this specific calling. First I would suggest you do volunteer work at a woman & children's shelters, or crisis counseling, teen pregnancy centers etc. Get some knowledge under your belt and work your way up to get a full understanding on how the operation runs.

Also if you can do some mentoring for woman, like your friend, maybe one woman at a time so you can put all your support into one person at a time, that sometimes can be a better pay off than trying to help lots of woman all at once. In other words giving your undivided attention sometimes has a better ratio of working.

Keep up the good work!

Start with your own circle of friends and ask them to carry the word to their communities and churches, but you must be sure you account for every penny properly. You don't want to start as a charity and end looking like a fraud so keep your books in good order.

If you are looking for taxpayer funding I would not hold my breath. Also, look at other charities with similar functions and see if you can piggyback on their efforts. Good luck.

You'd need an Attorney... and you could set it up as a "foundation" non-profit etc.
But the details/laws/set up needs legal advisement.
Then once you know that, and if you really want to do it, as the other poster said, try volunteering in a shelter etc. to get a real understanding of the cause.
Don't just put your money into it, without knowing the full breadth of it.
A sponsor, will not fund something like this, without a full business plan and set up.

try looking online doing a search on it.

I love your vision, and your willingness to help a demographic that tends to be judged harshly by so many comfortable Americans.

Sort through the information at http://www.grants.gov/ to see whether you qualify for funding. Grant money is available to women, minorities, and those trying to better the world. It sounds like you fit into two of those categories.

My best to you. I was once a struggling, single mom. I got help over the years from a few organizations and individuals – helped me so much, and I was eventually able to fight my way out of poverty. This experience has made it important for me to help others wherever I can.

Awesome! I would suggest that you contact your county assistance office. They may be able to point you in the right direction. If not there, contact your local congressperson.

You sound like an awesome person and your friends are very lucky to have someone like you around. I agree with one of the other posts about non-profit. I used to work for a non-profit that subsidized childcare for low income families and there is a lot involved in getting something like that started. You will need donors, business plans-including legal advisment, and the criteria for you area in starting a non-profit. Check out some non-profits in your area and talk to the people who work there, and even the people who started it if available. They will be your greatest resource and give you all the advantages, disadvantages, and where to start. Good luck, we need more people like you in this world!

There's definitely a need for this! I would start doing it, set up a business account and either incorporate or do a D.B.A. then you might be able to apply for grants etc. I think you could meet with a business attorney at this point for guidance.

That sounds like a wonderful idea! :)

My first thought (& I know nothing about these things!!) is to look into non-profit organization type stuff. Perhaps so you could accept donations as a non-profit org? Business & individuals could donate food, clothes, etc to help out these women & their children.
