Do You Swim with Your Contacts In?

I hate going to waterparks with my contacts in in fear I'll lose one so I usually just walk around the whole day blind as a bat. But maybe I'm wrong in thinking I'll lose one so I was wondering if you swim or go to waterparks with your contacts in?

What can I do next?

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer:

For waterparks and other places (jetskiing, rafting, etc) along those lines I just bring some spares. Yet I've only lost one in hundreds of trips.

For true swimming (pools, lakes, rivers) I just wear Swedish Goggles. Yet to lose a contact there, ever.

The ONLY time I take my contacts out is for a gas chamber.

Yes, always. My vision is bad enough that I can't go without contacts or glasses. I do wear goggles if I'm going to be doing any serious swimming, but for waterparks or splashing around with my kids, I've never had a problem. Oh - and I shower with my contacts in daily too.

I've never swum in my contacts. I just got new contacts last week, and noticed that the instructions say to remove them before swimming. My doctor says that the issue isn't just losing them; it's the fact that the chlorine and chemicals in pool water (or salt water, in the ocean) will definitely affect and damage the lenses themselves even in one session of swimming, and even if you keep your eyes shut. If you want your lenses to last, don't swim in them.

I would also be concerned about the lenses, which are very moist and adhering directly to my eyeball, holding the chemicals from the pool in my eye the rest of the day after swimming. I know the pool water doesn't stay "between" the lens and the eye, but today's lenses are very moist and permeable for comfort, and I would think that would mean they would retain moisture from being in the pool -- even with eyes closed, some water is still getting into the eyes.

My husband swims all the time and wears his glasses right up until he gets into the pool, then puts them inside his shoes so they won't get stepped on. He says once he's in the pool he seems to see fine for swimming. Same with me -once I'm in the water I don't really notice my bad vision as much.

I do. I don't open my eyes under the water. Well, actually I did accidentally do that one time and believe or not didn't lose the contacts but I definitely don't suggest it! My eyes do get dry from water being splashed into my face and that's no fun.

I always wear my contacts at water parks. I've even swum under water with them, but if I do, I squint so my eye lids hold them in place.

I've never lost one so far.

Good luck to you and yours.

I wear mine swimming all the time, never had a problem. But I also use monthly disposables, so if I happened to lose one, it would be annoying, but not the end of the world. I don't open my eyes underwater though, so maybe that's why.

I used to take goggles and put them on while on the ride... Kept them on my head while walking around.

Yep, absolutely. I've never lost a contact in water, pool, beach with waves or otherwise. If I'm going to actually swim vigorously, I'll wear goggles. But for just splashing around, I won't even wear goggles.

Do you normally wear contacts?

If you can actually get me into the water (or in a swim suit for that matter), yes I still wear my contacts. My husband normally wears glasses but for water parks he puts in his contacts and he has never had a problem.

Yes. I've never had a problem. I wear disposables and carry a spare pair with me, just in case. If you have long-term lenses, you may want to get "samples" of disposables, or a small box of them, and wear them over the summer, or vacation etc. If you're not familiar with disposables, remember that even if you wear them once in the month or two week period they are good for, throw them out and start fresh the next time. It's like an expiration date, not a cumulative number of times you can wear them. (ie not 14 days over a year, if you have one pair of two week lenses) Good luck!

Yes, I wear mine to waterparks.
I wear monthly disposables.
Actually only in O. eye (has eliminated the need for readers for me!)
Can you take a spare with you in your bag?
Oh--I don't open my eyes under water with mine in--if that's going to happen, I take my glasses & leave the contact out.

I know my daughter does. Since they are disposable she figures worst case she loses one and has to be half blind on the way home.

I have, but you have to keep your eyes closed :) And take lubricating drops with you. Worst that can happen is you lose one, I always have a good stock in my medicine cabinet.

I keep mine on in the shower a lot, so I know how they feel when they get water on them, makes em get a little crazy, and I've lost them in the shower a time or two.

The goggles suggestion is a good one!

I would be more concerned about picking up an eye infection from the water than I would about losing a contact. It really does happen.

I do wear my contacts while showering, swimming, and going to water parks. I just don't submerge my face in the water with my eyes open. If I do want to swim underwater and be able to see, I wear goggles.

I'm a big fan of disposable contacts that you replace every day. Besides not having to worry about whether they are clean enough or being over worn, they come in 90 packs so losing a contact isn't that big of a deal. I usually have replacements.

I am as blind as a bat and have never taken my contacts out to go swimming, I would not be able to see a thing!! I just don't ever open my eyes under the water and have never lost one before. I have had contacts over 15 years and have never had an issue wearing them while swimming. I think the risk of me running into something or loosing my child because I cannot seem them far outweighs the risk of loosing a contact or getting a minor infection (which has never happened). Maybe if you are worried about infection leave a pair of glasses in the car and take the contacts out as soon as you get in the car, and let your eye breath overnight. I think you are fine :)(

Yes! My vision is bad enough that going with nothing is just not an option. If I'm swimming laps or something, I wear goggles so I can keep my eyes open under water without issue.

For water slides and just general pool play, I do fine with quickly closing my eyes (I think I'd do that naturally anyway) when I hit the splash pool.

I always wear my contacts swimming. I rarely open my eyes underwater when I swim though. I think I have before and have never lost a contact. Might be worth bringing an extra pair just in case, but I think you will be fine!

Yes, I leave mine in. If there's a lot of water or I plan to submerge my eyes, I wear goggles. I've never lost a contact in the pool. The worst that has happened is discomfort from chlorine.

I have swum with my contacts in ( 20-30 times) I wore disposable ones. I did lose one once, but it was worth it! Without them, I was legally blind and would crash into the wall. I've had Lasix now, so it's not a problem ( but I still wear glasses.)
