Do You Have a Purse You Love?

As I'm slooooowly transitioning out of the diaper phase with my kids, I'm starting to think about what sort of purse I'd like to replace the backpack I've been using as a diaper bag for the past several years. I've never been much of a purse person and would love to hear what other people use.

For me, I think the main reason I've always carried the big backpack is so that I have a place to put my DSLR camera, which I always have on me. You never know when you want to capture a memory, right? :) Ideally, any purse that I use would be big enough to accommodate that, as well as the standard wallet, cell phone, keys. I'd probably want to always have a bottle of sunscreen and water with me. I'm sure there will be other odds and ends I'd like in there as well. So I think what I'm really looking for is going to be more tote-sized but ideally more structured and with a longer strap so I can throw it over my shoulder. Something that doesn't scream "I'm a mom!" but would accommodate everything a mom needs. Does such a purse exist??

Thanks for any recommendations!

My daughter ( 18) has a tote type Michael Kors that is fantastic! I will buy it from her when she's tired of it.... love it

She had a coach type tote before MK that is great and in great shape but due to the color and fabric ( I'm not a fan of advertising what brand I carry or wear) she's holding onto that one.

As for me... I have a Coach for summer and Coavh for winter... Both over 4 yrs old each in great shape and no need to replace.

I have a larger Coach purse, and I carry everything you say you want to carry in that purse. I'm never without my camera or sunscreen, I have a huge pocketbook, and although I don't often carry it, I will occasionally bring along a bottle of water. For my birthday, I was given a Nine West purse that is even larger than my current Coach purse. The Nine West purse is a bit more of an "I'm a Mom" purse, but so what? It's still better than a backpack!

Coach purses are more expensive, but if you can buy them from an outlet you'll save hundreds, and they last for YEARS. Seriously, they can take a beating.

Good luck.

I'm a big time Fossil fan for purses...love my new one I just got for my anniversary last month. They come in all shapes and sizes and have very fun patterns or you can go a little less funky with brown or black leather versions.

Without knowing your budget, it's a little tough to answer but I really love the Tano bag I splurged on a few months ago. I hadn't bought a new purse in years & spent a lot of time shopping online looking at different styles. I got the Zippy Bucket in black - it's the perfect size, has two shoulder strap options (one is removable) & I like that it has some brown on it because then I feel like I don't have to switch between black & brown purses - I use this one all the time, from errands with the kids to date nights out. I ordered mine from www.musthavebag.com & believe I found a coupon code or waited for a sale. Love it!

Try the brand Baggallini..I have a couple.. one of smaller size and the other that can fit many items... it's soft material and wears nicely... It can be dress up and casual.. I have gotten MANY compliments on it..
mine has an adjustable strap which is long enough to put over your shoulder..
They do make them in leather as well.. but I find the soft fabric to be a bit lighter and if you were to drop something on it, it cleans up nicely..

I love my Lug bags. I have the Cable Car Satchel in both black and lime green. It is fairly large, has an adjustable strap and can be used as a cross body bag. It is machine washable. It has a water bottle holder and comparents for phone etc. It is not the purse I use when I am dressed up, but it is great for everyday. Maybe it does say "I'm a mom" because it is so practical, but you can get such bright colours it is fun too.

I LOVE MY JUICY!!! Now, that was an extravogant (sp) gift from my MIL, however she knows my taste in purses, bottom line for me is the "hobo" style or tote style.

As you can see from the links that have many kinds of images the two styles are fairly simmilar. What I look for in a bag is: pockets, zipper, comfortable strap, classic or easy going style, slouchy and has a touch of fun to it. I tend to keep my large bag organized by having a small "make up bag" that holds key items, so I have one for make up (touch ups/chapstick), pens, change, sunglasses case(s) I always carry two pair, and tampons. Then my gloves and wallet - each bag is a different color for quick grabs.

Consider getting one made by someone who does serious sewing. My husband went to a craft fair (a professional one so these folks produce amazing stuff) and got me the best bag I've ever had: The interior is totally lined with pockets of varying sizes. Not just a pocket or two -- the sides and the ends too are all pockets, inside I can put everything (wallet, phone, keys, etc. etc.) into their own interior pockets. And the rest of the bag is very spacious. It is lightweight because it's strong quilted cotton fabric (but not cutesy-baby-quilty fabric, it's a classy tan/brown/olive earth tone pattern and does not scream "mom"). Empty, it weighs next to nothing. It has a zip closure so it's not hanging open all the time like some tote bags do. Best of all -- it's the only bag I've ever had that had a LIGHT colored interior. No more hunting for a dark leather wallet or my dark phone inside the black interior of a handbag! I can see everything inside at a glance because the interior is the same light tans and browns as the exterior! And it's all machine washable, which you cannot get with a leather bag that costs a ton more AND has a dark interior.

I would really get to a professional crafter and describe what you want. It may already be out there or you might get one made. But I've never before found any other bag that I could wash entirely, could see everything inside it, and that had enough pockets for items. Search online. I have no idea who made mine but there must be other crafters/quilters online who do the same kinds of things.

I think this bag cost about $65-$80 since I'd seen similar ones in the past at the same craft show. Leather bags by name makers would be the same or a lot more and you could not wash them, and I've never seen any other bag with all these interior pockets.....Yeah, my husband did fabulously well. I had not even hinted that I'd seen any such bags; he just saw it and said it seemed right!

And you could easily fit your larger camera and water bottles and snacks into this bag. I do!

I've never been much for the really expensive purses. My step-mom thinks no one can function without some designer purses, and has bought my sister and I a DB, and a coach. They are fine, and honestly, they held up really well. But my newest purse, I LOVE it's a leather concealed carry purse, so I can have my pistol with me without it being all that evident that I'm carrying.

I just bought a black leather O. by SAK.
I love it!
Not too big, not too small, not too deep that its a cavern of junk, a few pockets but not too many.
Worth the money for sure. (A splurge for me & I don't like all the cookie-cutter "usual" suspects out there.)
Also, if you like a roomy, soft bag, the Vera Bradley bags worked well for me through the "non-diaper, but still need to hold some crayons, a camera & snacks" years.

Liz Claiborne...a huge satchel bag which carries everything I need for Road Trips! Even my camera fits in there.

This weekend was a Road Trip Weekend. Hit the City with a notebook, a stack of papers, the book I'm reading, my wallet + 2 makeup bags in the danged thing! It truly has saved having to carry a purse + travel bag!

Bought the purse last fall, & am planning on using it thru the year...which is rare for me. :)

I like many Sherpani purses and bags. They are versatile and durable. They change up colors/patterns each season and clearance out, so if you catch a sale you can save 50-70% or more.

I use a variety of bags depending on my needs at the time. You can check out http://www.michebag.com/ for a neat concept where the bag stays the same and you switch out the outside (they call it a shell) to give you a different look. They have a variety of sizes, styles and colors to choose from.
You can also look up http://www.thirtyonegifts.com/ for a variety of different options to choose from. Both are sold through consultants, so you will have to see if there is one that lives near you.

I love my Michael Kors tote.. That I used Macy coupons on. Also coach totes too. But my red leather MK tote has held up the best and I get so many compliments on it.
