Did You Dye Your Hair During Your PG?

I have been dying my hair since I was in HS except when I was PG with my first. I didn't feel good about myself (b/c of my hair) and it looked horrible as it grew out. I am naturally a dirty blonde, and dye to light blonde. Now that I am PG with my second, and it's been about 3 months since my last treatment, it's really looking ugly and I about about ready to dye it (again... not feeling good about myself)! Did anyone dye there hair during their PG? What was the outcome? Any suggestions?? NEED HELP!!!!

What can I do next?

I dyed mine a light blonde...AND it FRIED it!!! I looked like a broom...I had to cut it all off after I gave birth and had a temporary conditioning dye put in! I've heard other good stories, though...my hair is "over-reactive" I guess!!

I do not like dying my hair during pregnancy because of the ammonia and other chemicals in the dye. Any chemical given access to your skin can wind up in your bloodstream. That was always my concern. I had to do it this time, 2nd preg and feeling awful about these blond highlights that had grown out. My hairdresser used a semi permanant ammonia free dye and we waited till the 2nd trimester and man I feel 100x better. I am aware the semi perm will only last 8 weeks or so, but I am just so much happier and I feel better that I took a safer route. I am a little paranoid about what is going on and in my body during pregnancy, but, I just had to do it. I hope this helps, need to talk more about it please send me a note. Best wishes.

C. - you are safe to dye your hair! Just make sure it is in a well ventilated space.

I went through infertility and my doctor was ANAL about anything and everything (I couldn't take a single aspirin, advil, nada!). She had a list of no-no's a mile long. I asked her about highlighting or dying my hair, expecting her to give me a resounding "NO!" but instead she said "ABSOLUTELY YES!". The doctor said our hair is dead so it doesn't absorb the dye, and today's products are soo gentle... the only thing you have to worry about is the fumes - which most are not noxious like they used to be.

Go for it girl - especially if it will make you feel better! This is supposed to be a joyful time to celebrate!! Congratulations!!

My Dr told me that she has no problem with it after the 1st trimester if the room where I was dying my hair was well ventilated. She also suggested getting just highlights and lowlights if I was not absolutly set on dying my hair. Highlights don't touch the scalp so there is less chance of the chemical getting into the bloodstream. I am getting my highlights redone next week and I know several people who have dyed their hair without issue. Congrats on the baby!

Safe or not safe? There appears to be alot of variety in the answers. Here's mine...

My doc told me never to do anything during my pregnancy that I would beat myself up over later. He said he didn't know about dyeing hair (and this was 17 years ago) but said the question is if the baby didn't come out normal would I blame myself for getting my hair dyed? So I chose not to do so.

You could always cut your hair short and be done with coloring for the next 9 months.

your unborn childs health should be way more important than if you feel ugly or not the fumes from hair dye could cause some serious damage so way out the odds.

I colored (and always have colored) my own hair during pregnancy, after the first trimester. I purchased Naturtint at Central Market, but you can buy it much cheaper at Vitacost.com. It's an "all natural" hair color without ammonia and a whole bunch of other junk that's found in normal off-the-shelf hair color. It worked just fine :)

I'm a hairdresser and was not told not to work while PG, and I have never met a hairdresser that didn't work while PG. We are around hair color all the time. If you are worried about the color touching your scalp get some highlights. Then there is not color on the scalp and nothing be absorbed through skin.
I once asked my doctor while there where so many conflicting issues on this, her reply... if we think they are sue happy we tell them no hair color. if not then we tell them to go for it. But if you are concerned double check with you doctor. They'll tell you yes or no.

You're safe to dye your hair....just sometimes it might not take as well due to hormones.

C., I am a cosmetologist. Don't color your hair while you are pregnant! The fumes are very bad for you to breath. Olease believe me no matter what anybody says. You have plenty of time afterwards (delivery).

I never had any problems dying my hair while I was expecting. And I colored it faithfully every 6 weeks. It is better for you to feel good about yourself than to go around with hair that you are uncomfortable with. The way you feel about yourself affects your health and your pregnancy. Good Luck and Congratulations

I colored my hair throughout my pregnancy. You just need to find out if your colorist uses and if it is not recommended. They should know or you can call and then look up the ingredients on-line regarding acceptability during pregnancy.

I dyed mine ever 6weeks during my pregnancy and had no problems at all, just a little sick feeling from the fumes later on in the pregnancy. My dr. told me i was perfectly fine to be dying my hair. I considered it my little pampering to myself during my pregnancy. Congratulations

I died my hair with all 3 pregnancies and it's perfectly safe. I also asked my OB and she said YES it is safe but the ONLY thing it "might" do is change your hair color a little when died because of your hormones but I never had that problem and she did say it was rare. Pregnancy is already a tough time and it's important to not feel "ugly" as much as you can because you can start getting depressed so go die your hair and feel your best! Oh BTW, I died my hair about every 5 weeks with my pregnancies and again, all of my babies were just fine!
Congrats on your baby!

I highlighted my hair during both of my pregnancies and have 2 healthy girls. Uncomplicated pregnancies. I think the exposure with a complete dye is possibly higher because there is more of it and they get it directly on your scalp. When you highlight hardly any gets on your scalp. Though in truth, probably none is absorbed anyway. If you are worried, just do a highlight it will get you through with your self-esteem intact. (I am also a natural dirty blonde and put light blonde highlights.)

I dont understand why so many people think its bad to dye your hair when you are pregnant? It makes no sense to me, all that can happen is you dont get the desired color due to your hormones, I did all over dye throughout both pregnancies, never a problem. Dye your hair and feel and look good! You deserve it.
