Did I Get Scammed by US Energy Savings

I live in the Chicago area and was visited by a representative from US Energy Savings. She stated that they could help me save money on my gas bill. She reviewed my current bill and said I qualified. She mentioned since I was hispanic that my savings could be lowered due to the fact that the Contracts(Spanish) she had were not yet revised with the current therm amount. I do not read Spanish all that great. I do however understand and speak it. I get my bill today and it is almost double my budget amount. Anybody familiar w/them? Will there be any savings or did I get scammed? Help. From what I understand the Spanish Contract said, was that there was a cancellation fee of $75.00 up the end of the Contract which is 5 yrs.

Contact the Illinois Attorney General's office to make a complaint or ask for advice: http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/consumers/index.html

Also, unfortunately if you do a google search on "US Energy Scam" there are a lot of hits - I think you did get scammed.

HI B.,

I have two hispanic friends who ran in to your same situation...I don't know all the details but do know both ended up with huge bills and were made to feel like they had no way out...one had their power turned off...call the Better Business Bureau - if nothing else, perhaps they can guide you to someone who can help you. It really upsets me to hear your story...it sounds like people are being taken advantage of -I'm so sorry!

I have heard of scams by these other energy companies. I think there was an article in the paper some time ago about something very similar if not the exact same as this and may have been the same company. Contact the Citizens Utility Board (has a web site, maybe .org?) and maybe they can help.
