Diaper Rash Nightmare!

My daughter never suffered from diaper rash - until now!
I always thought diaper rash was a wet diaper issue, so I have always been overly diligent about changing her often. But as of late it is a poopy diaper issue we are dealing with...

My daughter is 10 months old and is eating solid foods 3 times a day. It isn't much baby food at all. I do big people food, just cut up small or super soft.
Her normal day will be a cereal of some sort in the morning or toast with fruit. For lunch she will have some kind of meat with cheese and some fruit or veggies. For dinner she will have some sort of meat or pasta with some veggies. Yogurt does get in the mix during one of these meals as well.
She is a GREAT eater and is really upset when the tray is empty. She does get 3 bottles a day (of formula) as well shortly after these meals.

So here is the issue- now that she is eating big people food her diapers are filled with all that big people poo. You can clearly see what she has eaten. I don't let her sit in it for long, but it seems like even if I catch it in under 10-20 minutes I am too late. Her bottom is DARK red and she screams in pain when cleaning her. The worst tends to be if she poos at night she won't wake up to tell us and so sits in it for hours! On those night she will have sores on her bum that makes both of us want to cry!

I give her warm baths at night which she seems to love on her bum and I dry her well! We have tried many of the creams out there that work for a bit, but they almost seem to make the problem go on longer than need, be by making the area moist. So the past few days I have just dried her well after cleanings and put baby powder on and that has been better, but not a fix.

Last night was my final straw! She started fussing around 11 at night, but I didn't go get her. I thought she is just restless and didn't want her to think we will come get her if she fusses at night. She did go back to sleep so I thought all was well. At 1am she started crying again and it was just a sad pathetic cry. Not deep at all... more of a moaning. I decided to go check her out only to find her holding her feet up in the air trying to get the diaper from her bum. I changed her right away and was horrified to see the level of red and sores on her! I could see it in the semi-dark! After careful cleaning and lots of butt paste I rocked her back to sleep and just felt horrid for her bum. This morning her diaper change looked decent, but still very red! If it was summer I would let her run around naked in the backyard to get some fresh air on her, but for now I am stuck indoors with the diaper.

I guess I am looking for any advice. Is this normal to have such a reaction to big people food??? Are the veggies she is eating too acidic? She eats canned peas, carrots (her fav) and green beans. Her fruit is mainly bananas, but some peaches and pears as well. I am just at a loss. I plan on taking her to the docs to see what he suggests, but would love to hear from all the moms that have surely dealt with this!
Thanks so much!

J.- you poor things! My thoughts would be a food allergy, mostly because you said the rash is recent and you may have introduced a food that she'll happily eat (ie carrots) but her body is having a reaction to..A good friend of mine has a dd who pigged out on cherry tomatoes last summer and they were so happy-something healthy, straight from their garden. And assumed that she wouldn't enjoy them if she had an allergy-low and behold horrible diaper rash as a reaction to eating too many. Definitely talk to her doc, as it could be something else. Poor lil' thing. Most of my friends swear by vaseline all over the bottom area right after the bath when her pores are most open. My dd never really suffered with these; I've always used A+D ointment on the smallest of redness and it's gone in the am.
best of luck

FIRST it is awesome she is eating big people food. My son at 10 mos was solely on what we ate.
Tomatoes, Oranges, some other foods are high in acid levels. Which can cause burning when pooping and diaper rash.
If she is having loose stools with each poop, then she could be having a reaction to something she is eating too.
If it is solid, just sensitive, do this:

Get Aqua Phor and Maalox, mix equal parts (a little more Aquah Phor) and mix in a bowl, microwave for like 8 seconds and let cool and stir together. You can store this in a container, tupperware or whatever. Each time she has a poop diaper change slather her up big time. This is the VERY BEST diaper rash remedy ever! The Aqua Phor protects and soothes the skin, the maalox takes the burn out of it!
Promise. Given to me by my Pediatrician as my daughter had a lot more diaper rashes by far then my son. Keep her eating low acidy foods, no juices right now.
Make sure too it isn't a skin infection, if they are oozing, and crusty take her in to make sure it isn't a viral strain of something breaking her out.
We all have had bouts of diaper rash and my daughter got the brunt of it, teething was the cluprit with her, I swear when she cut teeth her bottom broke out every time so it may have little to do with the food.
Try the mixture I gave you, give it three days, if it hasn't cleared take her into your pediatrician..just to make sure it isn't anything more then bad rash.

My son used to get diaper rash like you're describing and it went on until I started using medicated powder, like gold bonds or a generic. I used the generic medicated powder that you can get at the dollar store. It made all the difference in the world! Good luck.

It sounds like she is having an allergic reaction to something new that she is eating. You might try to get a list from your pediatrician of some things you can cut out of her diet that might be causing it to rule out what is the culprit. That is pretty common with kids that are really young and just starting to eat new things.

Hey J.! Get rid of the butt paste and use Destin (creamy)!Works wonders I swear. Whenever my 19 month old has diaper rash (bad ones too), I lather on Destin and the red is gone within hours. Everyone raves about butt paste, but it really doesn't compare to Destin. Try it and let me know how it works out. Good luck!

My daughter had a similar issue. The nurse practitioner recommended that we use Bag Balm - an over the counter product that comes in a green tin - it is similar in consistency to vaseline. It is very gentle, non irritating, but provides a coating to keep the poo away from her bum. The final diagnosis that cured the diaper rash completely, was my daughter was lactose intollerant. So there may be some food your daughter is intollerant of (not quite as serious as an allergy) that is causing her to have this serious diaper rash. Once we removed lactose from her diet, no more diaper rash and we were able to get rid of the Bag Balm as well.

My DS2 had a bad diaper rash when he was tiny (turned out to be an allergy to his diapers!) and the only thing that didn't leave him screaming when I put it on was egg white. Sounds weird, but I whisked up some egg white and just slathered it on his bum, let it dry (you can use a hairdryer set to 'low' to speed it up if you want), let him hang out un-diapered as I could and then diapered him w/o wiping the egg white off. Because it's so thin, it can get into those tiny breaks in baby's skin & seal them so they can heal up.

You might want to look into food allergies/sensitivities, as someone else mentioned (I know a surprising number of people whose babies react to banana, believe it or not). It may not be that, but it might be worth checking. You could keep a food diary & see if any particular foods irritate her more than others. If you go see an allergist, keep in mind that they can only test for actual allergies... intolerances won't show up.

Best of luck! Hope your little girl is feeling better soon!

Hi J., don't worry we had the same problem with our baby boy. He would poop early morning and wouldn't let us know about it so he'd sit in it for a couple hours too! Needless to say he had the worst looking blisters on his butt, I ended up calling the doc and getting a prescription and that cleared it up but it took a long time even with the prescrip. So I'd call the doc you don't have to go in, they can call in something for you! Hope this helps.

You could be experiencing the dreaded teething diapers. My daughter gets awful diapers and immediate diaper rash when she's close to getting a tooth.

There are only two things that we have found work for her sensitive skin: Triple Paste (expensive but SO worth it — I personally think it should be the ONLY diaper rash remedy on the market.) And Dermoplast spray.

Try Triple Paste first — I usually see an improvement with my daughter inside 24 hours.

We just had our first experience with the raw, blistered diaper rash. First, make sure you gently pat her dry after cleaning her off. Then spray the Dermoplast on the bad areas. The spray will help with the pain. Follow-up with Triple Paste over the entire area. This really worked for us!!

Hi J.,

I feel your pain for I am with a child who gets the rashes alot. My daughter has food allergies and some of the acidic foods give her rashes especially after dirty diapers. I use baby aveeno body wash because it is oatmeal based and then use aquaphor on it. Some of the diaper ointments seem to sting my daughter when putting it in. I would talk to the doctor and ask them to do a blood test for food allergies. ( it is a generic test, but they will see the levels and may reccomend you to an allergist). The results frustrated me at first, but you always find away to get through it. The other thing I would suggest is letting her air out put her on a blanket on the floor (in case of accidents) and let her but breathe. I hope this helps and gl.
