Diaper Pail Vs. Regular Trash Can- Oh the Smell of It!

I bought a diaper champ after hearing good things. For the first 6 months we just used a regular open trash can and emptied it frequently. I am so grossed out by the diaper pail. I have to carry the whole thing outside just to change the bag because my house will smell like a sewage pump station if I don't. I also noticed that flies and their larva are living in the pail. I'm so grossed out and thinking about just going to a trash can and emptying it daily. Just out of curiosity, what conclusions/ methods have some of you mamas come to on this stinky issue?

What can I do next?

We use a diaper genie for poo poo diapers because it helps trap the smell more and use a larger foot levered covered regular pail for the pee only diapers.

I can't attest to it, but I did see this recently:

It sounds like a pain in the butt, but we buy those boxes of bags-like 500 at a time, and every time we change her we just throw it in there, tie it off and then put it into the garbage. Less smell if any at all.

We used a diaper genie with our first child then like you said-THE SMELL-EEEWWWW!
Now I bought a trash bin just for the diapers and line it with a regular trash abg and throw all diapers in there and it is kept in the garage.
Seems to work well and I keep a dryer sheet in the bin and it keeps the smell away. Our trash gets picked up 2x week so this seems to be going well. L.

Put the diaper in an old plastic bag from the grocery store tie it up and throw away. Take your trash out regulary and you will have no smell. It worked great for me. All those diaper genie things are gimicky and just one more thing to throw your money away. We never had bad diaper smells ever!!
Good luck!!

We found the diaper pails to be a hassle and an unnecessary cost of having to buy "special" plastic liners just for the product.
AND it stunk with all the diapers in there.

Now what we do is just toss them into our regular trash can....and everyday, we just take out the trash to our outside trash can for our twice a week trash pick up. We never get flies or larvae that way.

Simply emptying the trash out everyday is the best solution, for us. And it's the least hassle.

Hi Heidi,

We first used the Diaper Genie and you talk about a pain in the butt! When our daughter turned 1 we got the Diaper Champ and we loved it. We still have it two years later, we kept it for our second child.

For the smell, buy scented garbage bags to use in there. You are using bags, arent you?? If not, that is probably why your pail smells so bad and has larvae in it. You can ge scented garbage bags at the grocery store and I've heard someone recommend getting scented bags at the dollar store too.

Wash out your pail really well with hot water and soap. Then start using a garbage bag to catch all the diapers. It makes dumping much easier too!

We used the diaper Decor and it wasn't that big of a deal. Then we ran out of bags and couldn't find more, so now we throw them away after each changing. No smell that way!

Thank goodness our daughter is almost potty trained.

Hi
I just gave up on my diaper genie as the smell was unbearable. Especially in my daughter's room after it was closed up at night or after a nap. I bought the Munchkins disposable bags, and the Diaper Sacks. They are both just plastic bags. I put them in the regular trash which is emptied daily. I have also used ziploc bags when out and about
Good luck
