Hi Ladies,

I am wondering what is the going rate for a babysitter? My neighbor will be wating my son during the summer and just want to know what is a fair amount.

Thanks for your help!

I am curious about that, as well. I've tried asking around...it really seems to depend on the age or the sitter and their experience level, as well as if it's their main source of income. All the rates I listed below are per hour.

It seems for a high school student, the rate is anywhere between $5-$10 (as low as $5 for one child, then add more $$ for additional children - but some people pay $7 for one child). For college students doing this as a summer job, I asked a girl at church what the rate tends to be - she said $10-$12 is the typical rate. For an adult who is doing it to help, really whatever is reasonable to make it worth their while - most of them will be willing to give you a rate. (A lot of teenagers are afraid to give a normal rate - so you can always ask their parents in that situation.)

I'd say continue to ask around, hopefully you get more responses here, too! If all else fails, be honest with the sitter and explain that you have no idea what a fair rate is - I'm sure they will be reasonable and let you know what is 'normal' for them or what they'd accept.

K.,
We use mainly college girls for occassional baby-sitting and pay $10 an hour.

We pay $235 a week for an infant and $181 a week for my 4 year old at the daycare. I'm not sure what arrangement you have, but I think a typical rate for a regular in-home daycare is $35-$50 a day.

I pay about $10 an hour for our adult babysitter.. it's probably a little high, but to me she's a wonderful sitter and luckily I don't use one often so it works for me. I paid a sitter that was 16 last year $5 an hour and she said that was her rate.

Four years ago when I was babysitting, driving my own vehicle to and from the home, I got paid anywhere from $8-15/hour depending on the age and number of children. For an almost one year old I'd say a good rate would be $8 if your sitter is under 16, $9 if your sitter is under 21 and if your sitter is over 21 $10. And, always round up when you pay your sitter. That was usually for a night out or a short period of time (less than six hours). If you're looking at a daily and weekly occurance I'd go by a weekly rate. For caring for your son, for someone under 18 I would think that $200 a week would be a good fair amount as long as no housework is required, should housework also be required $250 would be a better salary. For someone over 18 I would pay $300 a week and if you are also needing housework $350 a week. Hope that helps :)

Rates seem all across the board these days. I can remember babysitting for $1.50 per hour, but I'm 32, so that was... ahem... quite a while ago. We have one daughter and pay our sitter $8.00/hour for occasional babysitting. In other words, we don't have a standing weekly arrangment with her or anything. I imagine you can pay less if you use her on a regular basis.
