Cramping with Birth Control Pills?

After 8 years of not having to be on birth control, I am now back on the pill. I'm breastfeeding so I'm on the "mini" pill. I've had some cramping. Last night it was noticable enough to make me take an Advil. I've been on these pills for about 2 months. Are the cramps normal? Do I just need to allow time to have my body get used to being on the pill?

What can I do next?

I eould continue with them. Breast feeding can also cause cramping so the two together may be affecting you.

My youngest is now 3 months old also, and I am on my 3rd month of Loestrin (mini pill). I have break thru bleeding, random cramping, and other pms-like symptoms. With my first son the mini pill worked just fine, but with my 2nd, I changed because I couldn't stand the bleeding and cramping. It did protect me from pregnancy, but the side-effects did not go away. It looks like I'll be changing pills again. I would talk to your dr. to see if there's another pill or form of birth control that might work better for you. But it's likely the side effects are from the pill and won't go away. Good luck!

Everyone is different because I am also on the mini pill and have had some cramping. I've been on it since my daughter was 6 wks and she's now 8 months. It hasn't been every month or a whole lot but I definitely have had some. I just chalked it up to my body trying and get back to "normal."

oh my gosh... please do not believe that breastfeeding is complete birth control! almost every doctor/nurse will tell you that is not the case... that's why there are so many babies that come 13 months after their big brother/sister. :) i have a friend who found out she was pregnant again when her first baby was only 5 weeks old! can you imagine??

anyway... i did the mini pill, too... it just gives you the rest of what breastfeeding doesn't cover, and is fine for the baby. and my doctor said, "as SOON as you stop nursing, let us know, because this pill WILL NOT work on its own!"

anyway, i would talk to your doctor about the cramping... i know that after my little girl was born, when i started trying bc again, my body had changed so much that i was having a hard time finding a pill that worked well for me. one month, my period was worse (cramp-wise and bleeding) than before i started bc! it might just be your body adjusting, but if it keeps up, i still might ask the doctor. are you ovulating? or about to start your first period since giving birth? some women don't start until after they quit nursing, but i started mine when my daughter was a few months old.

good luck! hope you feel better. and congratulations on your new sweet blessing!

Just a curiousity...? Why are you on birth control if you are also breastfeeding? I breastfed 5 children, and during my seasons of breastfeeding (which lasted at least a year and a half with each), I did not ovulate, did not menstruate, at all. And the breastfeeding books of the day, La Leche League, etc., explained that breastfeeding confers birth control protection for the duration. It was only when you began to taper off toward weaning a child that you had to become concerned again, since the protection became sporadic and inconsistent as your milk production began to wane. I wouldn't ask you to take my word for it, as all my kids are grown with children of their own, so it's been a long time now, but I'd sure check into this to make certain, especially if there's any newer research. And it seems your birth control pill would cross the barrier through breastfeeding from mother to child. You certainly don't want to create hormonal problems for your child later on, so I'd check into this very carefully.

I'm currently taking this pill as well but my DS is now 16 mnths old. I've been taking it since he was 7 weeks old and have never experienced any cramping. I also took it when my DD was born years ago and also never experienced any cramping. In fact, it helped big time with getting rid of my period cramps so if you're having cramps, I wouldn't think it's from the pill but call your doctor to be sure. Good luck to you and congrats on your new baby.

All BC pills are supposed to do is keep you from getting pregnant. In my case I broke thru the things all the time.(mid month bleeding) My daughter is proof that for some women-even that isn't true. Fertility is NOT my problem.
