my 3 month old grandson has a cough, more like a bark. doesn't have any other symptoms. no fever, runny nose. nothing. only happens 1 or 2 times a day but it is an awful sound. the dr. said he thought it is nothing to worry about but we are still concerned. any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Croup is usually worse at night. If he starts it up at night, take him outside in the cool air. People panic and rush to the hospital, and it's better because they have taken their kids out into the night air.

Sometimes kids need breathing treatments with croup if it constricts their breathing (that happened to my 7 year old - I was astonished that a child that old would still get croup, especially as bad as he did.)

Watch and listen for wheezing and "off behavior" that signals he is having trouble breathing, since he can't tell you.

Good luck!

I know when my kids are having issues with their asthma their cough sounds like a bark but they don't like to even think about diagnosing kids with asthma that young. I had one dr tell me they don't do it till after 2 years old and allergy's not before a year even though both my boys were younger than that for both. I would suggest finding a new dr.

Good luck and God Bless!!!

How can the Pediatrician say nothing is wrong?
A "barking" cough, means something.
Maybe he has Croup?
Croup, sounds like a seal bark.
My son had that.
But it self resolves. But sometimes it can get worse.
In any event, I would think that baby needs a more concrete diagnosis.

Might be the croup. It's a cough that sounds like a seal. I would get a second opinion just to be sure.

did the dr actually hear the cough? just curious since it only happens one or two times a day... i'm sure they checked his lungs, etc. keep a close eye on it and hit up the ER or urgent care places if it gets worse, a fever starts, or the cough seems to become more frequent. i know it's frustrating to hear "there's nothing to do but let it run it's course", but that is just all there is to do sometimes. hope he gets better really soon and the physician is correct in his "no big deal" diagnosis :)

My 3 1/2 year old gets this every time he gets sick and has ever since he was little. The pediatrician stated that his colds go straight to his chest and can turn into upper respitory infections. He uses a nebulizer when he gets it and we use a humidifier. I thought it was croup, but the ped said it wasn't, and now we realize it happens every time the weather changes. I also have a co-worker whose son gets it and she gives him allergy medication but he's older. I would check with the pediatrician again and make sure that if you're not satified with the answer, get a second opinion. It's not normal, and can turn into something more serious if your don't get the right medication.

Could be croup. You'll just have to let it run its course, if it is. Just keep an eye on him. If he starts to run fever or the nasal congestion gets worse, bring him back in.

Does it get worse at night? If so, then it could be croup. Since he's only 3 months I'd keep a close eye on it, but don't be alarmed even if it is croup. It will sound very barky, like a seal.

If he gets worse at night then make sure he has a humidifier (cool mist) in his room at night. Crank it up. If you don't have that you can always lock up in the bathroom and turn the shower on high so that it creates lots of steam. If it is really bad and he has trouble breathing or turns blue then he needs to go to the hospital. They can put him on a steroid to help him breathe better.

If none of that happens and it really does just happen a few times a day, then it's probably nothing and I wouldn't worry. It may be very dry in your house so a humidifier wouldn't be a bad idea and can only do good things!
