So we've decided to have our son circumcised and I was just wondering if any of you know does DSHS cover this? I was under the impression that they dont, but my sister-in-law insists that they paid for her sons. So Does anyone know? I know I could call and find out and probably will, but Just thought I'd ask all of you first

What can I do next?

Hi
They way I understand it is that Dshs used to cover it but since then Circumcision has been classified as a cosmetic surgery not a necessary one. My oldest son is almost 5 yrs old and they didn't cover it then. It cost us $300 dollars. My youngest son is 3 yrs old and it was not covered for him either and so his cost us $200. They way dshs explained it to me is that it is not a necessary surgery and there for will not cover it but if down the road or even if at birth its classified as necessary for his well being then they will cover it. We just had our peditrician do each of our sons and paid the cost. Good Luck with your son, Roberta

L., I have been foster parent for 10 years and DSHS does not cover any circumcision. They consider it a total cosmetic procedure. They will only cover it if a doctor deems it a medical necessity for another reason. If you are going to have it done I would do it while he is small enough to be a doctor office visit. If you wait it is then considered surgery and is done in the hospital and the cost quadruples. good luck.

No they dont cover it and insurance companies dont because its considered cosmetic. Check with the Hospital and your Dr. office to see where it is less expensive to have it done. Congrats on your new baby boy!

They will cover it under some of there plans. I am on Molina through DSHS right now for a pregancny and they are NOT covering it. My regular health plan did when I had it. Some other DSHS plans may cover it as well it just depends. My olds roommates sister was on DSHS when she had her son three years ago and they did cover it them. But i think with the changing times and the fact that more people are turning to DSHS for medicial they have had to cut back on what they offer. So I would give your company they put you with i.e. Molina a call and see what they call. You could call DSHS but they take forever to get through. The other thing too, if they DONT cover it depending on your hospital it runs from three to more hundreds dollars to get it done...but they will let you pay for it month to month which is nice!! I know valley does that anyways so it is worth asking!!

Yes they do, or at least they do when the baby is still in the hospital after delivery. Check with your ob-gyn or pediatrician.

Hi i work in a medical office and circumcision is not covered by DSHS/Medicaid or any of the healthy options health plans if it is not deemed medically necessary. Some insurances will cover this service if it is part of your benefits. If the circumcisison was done in the hospital and they did not make you sign an informed consent explaining to you that the service is not covered by your insurance and you cost will be $$, the hospital can not bill you and therfore would have had to write the charge off. (this is responding to another response).

DSHS does not cover circumcision. In fact, most insurances do not cover it since it is not medically necessary. I just set up payment plan with the dr for both of my boys. Good luck!

I was on DSHS with my youngest two children (ages 3 and 1) and they did not cover this. We did check the cost of having it done in hospital vs. having it done in the doctor office, and it was cheaper in the doctor office; therefore, we had it done there when each child was only a few days' old as they instructed us. It cost us $300 three years ago, and $400 one year ago, so the price did rise...not a cheap decision, but it was right for our family and I am glad it was done for my boys. With our firstborn son, we had excellent private insurance which I believed covered circumcision. However, our private insurance now does not cover it...I have heard more insurance companies are moving away from the coverage as an unnecessary expense or cosmetic procedure.

Have fun with your new son!
