Changing Crib Sheets!?

Is there some trick that I don't know about on how to change crib sheets without a full on wrestling match? Do I have to take the bumper off everytime to avoid a full aerobic workout? I lift the mattress 1/2 out of the crib to get the clean sheet on, but then the bumper gets all bunched under it when I put it back. I dread changing them, and as a result probably don't change them as often as I should :/

LOL, a common issue it seems. I used to untie one side (the short side (two ties) of the bumper, slip the mattress out of the crib completely and then slide it back in and retie the two ties. Luckily I never had an issue with spit up or wetting through diapers and he always napped somewhere else so I didn't have once a week at the most.

I can't say as I have had to change my 8.5 months olds crib sheets ever since HE WON'T sleep in it!

Good luck, it doesn't last forever, next it will be the toddler bed or the big kid bed, which is just more sheet to wrestle with!

I just wanted to say thanks for asking! Whenever I change my crib sheets the mattress pad comes off, too, and I have to half climb into the crib to get it all done. :) I always put a spit cloth or waterproof pad over the sheet so I don't have to change it every time there's spit-up or something. The bumper gets in the way, but it is better than waking up three times a night because my son has a thigh wedged through the slats. I just have that tighed on snugly and the bottom pulled below the top of the mattress. That helps a bit, but I still find that I have to pick up the mattress. :)

Hi J.,
I'm so glad you asked :)

Thank goodness I was told about The Ultimate Crib Sheet before I went through what you are. They are a Godsend! Just a lined flat sheet with elastics that snap around the crib rails all the way around. You just unsnap and toss it in the wash. I use two, and when I take the top one off there's a clean one underneath. The crib sheet is just decorative for us now, but I wash it now and then for dust mites, etc.... Babies R Us has them!

I used to layer my sheets....mostly because I was lazy I suppose. I had mattress protectors between each sheet (Like these: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3368919 ). So I could layer 3 sheets, and when the kids would spit up, wet through, etc I just had to pull the top one off. Then I only had to wrestle with the mattress once a week or so!

I also remember seeing some cool zip on sheets at Babies R Us or One Step Ahead I think....

Good luck!

Hi J.,

Honestly, you might want to get rid of the bumper pads. It has been known to cause the baby to sufficate. Sure it looks nicer but better to be safe than sorry. My oldest child(she's 14 now) did get tangled up in hers and it was on her face. She was 1 1/2 months old. I took them off right away and have had 4 more children since then and did not use the bumpers for them. This also makes it easier to change the sheets. Good luck. K.

hi J., and congrats! you really shouldnt have bumpers in there, its not safe. if you want to keep arms/legs/binkys inside the crib, and later keep the baby inside the crib, try the crib tent 2, i dont know how i would live without it. of course, it does make changing the sheets even more of a pita than it already is. whether or not you get the crib tent, there are 2 solutions. first, they have sheets that have a top that zips off and on. i dont have it, i didnt want to spend the $, 3 kids later i dont know why i didnt, but i didnt. my solution is to layer the sheets. sheet, mattress pad, sheet, mattress pad, etc. i take the mattress out of the crib and layer as many as i can get on there while still keeping them snug and safe and secure, i can usually get 6 layers (3 pairs of sheet/mattress pad). then, when you need a change, just peel away layers. works great.

There is absolutely a trick! Get yourself QUICK-ZIP CRIB SHEET by CLOUDS AND STARS. It is the best solution, and I can't believe it is not more popular -- all you do is unzip the top part, wash it, and zip it back. (I happen to be a bit crazy, so I iron it as well, but it's not necessary) I only use this, and absolutely love it. hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi J.
Agreed - it is a pain
Check out http://www.cloudsandstars.com/
once you put them on, you just zip the top off versus taking the whole sheet off.
Great idea!!!

Since your baby is only a week old, I think you can do without the bumpers - the baby won't be able to turn over or move around for quite a while yet. Those zip sheets sound like a miracle for when you do feel you need to start using bumpers, though.

Take out the bumper; they are suffocation hazards and aren't recommended anyways.

What I used to do is crouch down & "tease" the sheets out from around the mattress through the crib bars. When I was making the bed I would just slide the bumper up a little get the corners somewhat pushed in the correct position & then tease them down through the bars. It made changing the sheets a bit easier.

I hated changing crib sheets. Especially with twins... it took so long to untie the bumpers and get the mattress out. I started using basically a waterproof flat sheet (kind of flannel-ish) that sat on top of the crib sheet. It didn't slip around or move, but all I had to do was take it off and put another one down if there was a pee pee mess in the crib in the middle of the night... Then we'd just change the crib sheets every once in a while and not in the middle of the night...

Hi J.!

The Ultimate crib sheet!!!!! It snaps to the crib rails and lays over your crib sheet. When you need to change your sheet all you do is unsnap the ultimate and throw it in the laundry. You still see your pretty crib sheet below and your baby sleeps on top of the ultimate sheet. I found them at Babies R Us when my son was born in 2004 and bought more when my second son was born in 2007. I swear by them and love them! I did purchase 3. One to be used, one always in the laundry, and an extra...just in case. I can't say enough good things about this product.

Best of luck!

wish i could help, but i credit my 50 lb post-partum weight loss in large part to changing the crib sheets. i think your best bet is to take the bumper off every time. (sigh) i've got my 16 month old in a toddler bed now because i was sick of the whole crib thing. muuuuuuch better.

I am sorry to say I don't know any tricks - I did the same thing you are doing - pulling it up and then trying to keep the bumpers down - I was short one or two arms......I am guessing it's for the new one - they do have sheet savers that you would lay the baby's head on - they tie to the crib sides and they are soft terry cloth - you could use them and if you change up the baby head on one end and then the other - your sheets can be changed less often. I hope this makes sense.....Good Luck

We found one brand that is a little easier, and for some reason, the only color that is easier to put on is yellow. It was a sateen type sheet that we bought at Buy Buy Baby and was a couple dollars more than the others, but well worth it.

The very best money we spent was on zippered crib sheets and they weren't too expensive at all. The zipper went right around the edge of the mattress top and seriously in less than a minute everything was fresh again and you don't even have to touch the bumper. Our son is five now and I can't remember where we got them but I know we ordered them online. Babystyle or something like that.
