Cat Urine Odor in Carpet

OK my "kids" (22 and 20) who are in charge of cleaning the littler box recently threw away the rug that was under the car box to keep any stray cat urine or feces off the carpet. Now the carpet where the litter box is kept smells badly of car urine. I need some suggestions of some 100% guaranteed methods of cleaning the smell out of the carpet. I have already tried to use a carpet cleaner and it still smells a bit.

Thanks!

PS - If you are referring a product, where can it be bought?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have ordered the Icky Poo from Amazon and it should be here by Wednesday. Thanks so much for the recommendations!

White vinegar should take out the odor and any stains that may have been left. If the first application doesn't quite do the job, just continue using it until it get all the odor out.

You are going to have to peel back the carpet and replace the padding under it since the urine soaks through the carpet to the pad. Cleaning the carpet only goes so deep and doesn't clean the pad.

Done that been there. Ugh. But still have cats and dogs. LOL

I agree with Lesley. When I was watching diy the other day they actually had to do something to the concrete because that pneumonia odor gets absorbed into the concrete sometimes. I don't know if the box is on the first floor or second?

Your "kids" do know that if you change the box and put a lid on it nothing will get on the floor, right? Just sayin lol I've had 2 cats, 1 box for almost 3 years wit no problems :)

I noticed in walmart, by the flea/tick stuff they have pet odor cleaner specifically for pet odors. It's white with black letters (I haven't personally used it). The carpet cleaning companies do pet odor stuff too if it comes to that.

The best odor/stain remover I have found is Sol-U-Mel. You can only buy it directly from the manufacturer. When I recently sprayed it on a stain, my daugher (who is super sensitive to smells) said "the living room smells nice mommy" so I know it works.

I am a marketing rep for them so if you are interested, I can help you get your account set up.

Pour baking soda on it and leave it there. Vacuum off after 24 hours.

I LOVE UrineGone! You can find it at Target or Walmart. Works on pet and people urine, if you have any boys who tend to miss the toilet.

We had a male cat for about 2 days and he sprayed everywhere (and I mean everywhere) in our house. I had a bottle of Natures Miracle on hand and looked at the label after I used the entire bottle. The main ingredients are Isoprophyl Alcohol and "Natural Enzymes". It is expensive at 11 - 19 dollars depending on what size you buy. My first question was; "How can Enzymes live in Alcohol?" I was suspicious so I just mixed the 70% Isoprophyl Alcohol I had on hand in our medical supply with water in a spray bottle. I srayed everything I could reach and I havn't smelled a thing since. I have a pretty good sense of smell too, so I was pleasantly surprised when this worked. You can find two big bottles of 70% alcohol at Costco for about 3 bucks. But you could probrably find a more potent 90% variety at Walgreens or somehwere like that if you choose to use something stronger. Hope this works for you! :)

Have you tried something specific to pet stains and odors like Nature's Miricle? You need something that works on the enzymes in the pet urine. I had a semi feral male that sprayed in my house quite a few times and Nature's Miricle worked great at getting rid of the smell.

I know you have already made a purchase but I still want to recommend this product:
http://www.odordestroyer.com/category/OdorControl.html

Several years ago when we moved our male dog sprayed EVERYTHING (we've since had him neutered). The stucco columns for our patio roof were stained yellow 12-16" high. The stench was so unbearable we couldn't even open our patio doors for fresh air. I did some research and found Odor Destroyer. I followed the directions for application and I only had to spray the affected areas once for it to remove the odors. I was expecting to have to apply it at least twice before it would work so was pleasantly surprised when it worked with just one application. I have since recommended to everyone I know that has pets.

The only thing I found that works is Odo Ban from Walmart or Sam's Club. I've tried everything including Nature's Miracle, vinegar etc and that was the only thing that totally got rid of the smell. Nature's Miracle worked for a short time, but the smell came back. Plus, it's expensive! Odo Ban is cheap for a gallon jug!

I have used the Nature's Miracle for a long time and have been happy with it. Yes, it's pricey, but worth every penny. If it doesn't do the job, your kids may need to help you replace the carpeting.

The thing with the NM is that you have to use enough to soak through the carpet *and* through the pad. In this case, you want to just pour it on. The product has an odor of its own, but if you hit every place on the carpet you need to, when it dries thoroughly there shouldn't be any odor at all (its own or the cat's). I bought a black light to help me find all the areas. You sometimes want to check the whole vicinity.

I foster cats for a rescue and have for years. No one who comes to visit can even tell I have cats let alone foster cats. It also makes a difference in what cat litter one uses. There is no urine smell at all with wood pellets. Anti Icky Poo for urine on carpet, you can find it on amazon.com.

hydrogen peroxide - pour it on, let it bubble, blot it up. Rinse with water and blot. Repeat until the odor is gone.

I 2nd the Anti-Icky-Poo recommendation. I have used it on the carpet (cat peed on stairs, angry about wearing cone collar) and on the porous stone of the fireplace hearth (cat frightened/angry about 2nd cat). Works best with complete saturation (down into the carpet pad) and possibly 2nd application. Really, Really works!
