Carpeting

We recently moved into a townhouse that has beige wall-to-wall carpet. I put down an 8X10 area rug from our previous home that has a mixed pattern of cream, cranberry, and dark brown. Our sofa is chocolate and walls are white. I did it to define the open space but am now wondering if I need it or it's weird to have it. I am also trying to buy curtains, which prompted the original question to myself. So leave it or take it out? If I leave it, color ideas for curtains?

Thanks so much!

I've read articles that said putting an area rug over wall to wall carpeting is not good because it rubs against the carpet causing damage. I suggest you find out if this is true.

Depends if your room needs some flair or color. Where you have beige carpeting and white walls, and then chocolate sofa .. .I'd go for some color, so I would keep the rug, which I think is ok because you have it on a neutral.

I love cranberry (from your rug) so I would tie my curtains in with it - some cranberry in the curtains. And then have some throw pillow with some cranberry in them. Or some color that is similar that also goes with your chocolate sofa.

Hope that helps :)

I would check with your landlord before leaving the area rug on top of the wall to wall carpet.

This will cause strange wearing to the carpet and the carpet that is covered will be discolored. You could get charged for new carpets when you vacate the premises.

This is why I don't put carpet in any of my rentals. You can add color to the room with your curtains and accessories.

Since you are renting, leave it for sure. It protects the carpet underneath and helps you get your security deposit back when you move! I would probably go with cranberry curtains to bring out the color in the rug.

does it look weird? if not, i'd say leave it. it sounds as if the colors go well with your furnishings, and it'll probably protect the underlying carpet.
i'd add a pop of color with cushions, curtains and accents.

Introducing some gold/mustard would look great. In curtains & throw pillows with cranberry & gold.

I'd keep the carpet covered with the rug for one reason and that's to protect their carpet. Under that rug should stay very clean.

I'd go with something that has a little of the cranberry in it with brown too. Those colors look good with some of the sage colors too. I'd not want a bold pattern or a lot of color because I like muted but you could do so much with those colors.

Perhaps the white walls are the issue. Can you paint the room or a few accent walls?

I agree with Jackie P. Putting an area rug over carpet can damage the carpet below.
