Hi Ladies,

I have never been to a Chiropractor in my life, I think I need one now. During my 2nd pregnancy towards my last 3 mths I developed very bad sciatica on my left side. Now for the past 2 mths I am getting a very painful pain on my left side but with out the shooting pain that runs down your side like it would with sciatica.

It hurts when I bend towards my left & when I pick up the baby. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning my back starts to hurt. But There are days it does not bother me.

Now I think what will help me is a chiropractor instead of going to a regular Dr.

Has anyone been through this ?

Can you please recommend a good chiropractor?

Thank you in advance!

L.

Hi L.,

I pulled my back several years ago lifting a sofa; I was getting married in 3 weeks and when I went to Dr Grayson I couldn't even bend over to tie my shoe. Needless to say - when we left to get married, I felt fine! I live in Delray and my husband & I still travel to Dr Grayson's office whenever we need him.

I am going to be the odd one here (I don't care if I get flamed or not), but here goes...I think you would be better off to see a physical therapist than a chiropractor.
If you must see a chiropractor, you should keep an eye on these red flags: If you have to keep going back to him/her every week for several months, they are obviously not being that effective and you need to see someone else (they may make you feel good for a short time after their manipulations, but if the pain comes back, they are not taking care of the problem long term). Another red flag is if all they do are manipulations and modalities (electrical stimulation, heat, ultrasound) and nothing else. A good practitioner should be showing you exercises to strengthen the core to help stabilize your low back tp prevent it from going out again and the pain returning. They should also be educating you on proper body mechanics (that is, proper ways to lift, get in and out of bed, do housework, etc, so that you don't re-injure your back.
Only the person who provides all these things will give you the most long term benefit.
(By the way, physical therapy is usually a covered medical expense, but chiropractic care is not...something else to keep in mind as well).
Good luck in your search

Hi L.,
I wanted to share my story. I found a wonderful chiropractor and think he helped in getting pregnant for I have PCOS. Although I had to pay out of pocket, it was much cheaper than my healthcare copays. His name is Dr. Fay and is in the Winn Dixie shopping center on Pine Isl and 44th. ###-###-####. Tell him I sent you. He's a softy for children. He has expanded his insurances recently so maybe it can work for you. I started with him around Aug of 2006 and ended pregnant that September. I had the most wonderful pregnancy aside from being high risk including my age. I also had back/neck pains continually. I'm from NY too and have no family here either. It sucks.

Hey L.,

I do not live near your area but I may have some advice for you. Chiropractors are great, I use one all the time and I love them! I hope you find a good one! I did have the same problem as you with the sciatic nerve during pregnancy and now my side hurts a lot too. It is muscle related and the best thing that has helped me is taking 800mg of IB Profrin and putting a hot water bottle on it for at least 30 min. and laying down. The same thing happened with my first baby and it took 4 months to heal. Muscles and nerves take time to heal.

All the best to you! Hope this has helped!

OK... I have to respond to Christine G.'s comment. My husband is a Chiropractor and what she says is just not true. I was adjusted during my whole pregnancy and had a wonderful pregnancy...not one problem. There is research to show that getting adjusted during your pregnacy can ease your symptoms and allow for an smoother delivery. My son was then adjusted 45 minutes after he was born. The birthing process is very traumatic not only for the mother, but the baby as well. My advice when looking for a chiropractor (since we are not in your area) is to call some of these offices recommended and see which one you feel comfortable. Obviously, they should not be taking x-rays of you while you're pregnant, but they should do some x-rays after you give birth to check out your spine for a better evaluation. I do agree with Christine that the Chiropractor should not just use the modalities (electro stimulation... and so on). They should instruct on core exercises along with the adjustments. The only thing I can say, if you just go to a Physical therapist and they are working on the muscles, but the structure (spine) is still out of alignment then they haven't done the job either. Just don't be afraid to try Chiropractic...it's an amazing thing. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. I would love to help!

I've had good success with chiropractors for my back problems in the past. Recently my regular doctor gave me a set of simple exercises to do every morning and they have REALLY helped (I have a barely touched box of Vicodin to prove it ;) ). He prescribed physical therapy for me, but I never bothered to go since the exercises helped so much. I would recommend seeing your regular doctor for advice first, especially if insurance/ money is an issue. He might even be able to recommend a chiropractor.

Some chiropractors seem to believe that chiropractice is a replacement for ALL medical care, and they freak me out. So you might want to watch out for that. But as far as getting help for back problems, it's worth looking into.

My current Chiropractor just moved to Tamarac. His name is Arthur Reid. His wife Hope, is also a chiropractor. She is on here too as a mommy :) They are terrific and I love their practice. I ended up having to leave because I am too far away from their new office now but it sounds perfect for you. They are located off University and 44th.

Believe it or not, I'm an MD and I've been to a chiropractor myself for back problems! I think for some pronlems such as this, they are better than a regular doctor. Dr. Sandra Fico-Charni is a friend of mine and she practices with her husband Dr. Andrew Charni
