Breast Pumps - Little Elm, TX

I am having a new baby on April 17th and this will be my first time to breastfeed. My water ruptured on 3-28, so needless to say we have been in hospital since then and we are having c-section @ 34 weeks. So I haven't had a chance to get breast pump. Can anyone suggest an electric pump that's not so expensive?

What can I do next?

I am trying to sell my Medela Instyle breastpump. I bought it from a friend for a lot of money and only used it for 2 weeks. It is in the box and I have 2 sets of accessories. She had a set and I had one. You can research it if you like. It was a great pump and easy to use.

Honestly wouldn't waste money on anything but a Medela. I would rent one from the hospital for a month, then, once you have established breastfeeding get the Pump-in-style if you plan to pump 3 times a week or more. If you'll be an occasional pumper, the Medela single electric should be fine.
I have a friend who used the Avent hand pump successfully for a while too.
I know it seems expensive, but considering that formula costs $100 or more a month, it's not that bad to get a $200-$300 pump.

Medela PIS. I know they are expensive, about $250, but if you think about how much money you will save by NOT buying formula it is a GREAT asset!

And knowing you premmie will be getting the best kind of milk...mamma's milk...possible.

I don't know if you know but just remember that the output of your milk by pumping is not gage on how your supply is. Just keep that in mind.

And Congrats on the baby!

I would talk to the location where you are having the baby... they usually have a breast feeding center that can guide you to one... i was given one to use (the pump and what not was new but the machine was old) so the part that covered my breast was new.... it helped and they had a lactation nurse come up and help me breast feed... it was helpful

Hi A., I purchased a gently used pump on E-bay for around $120 (including shipping). It was a Medela Pump n Stlye. I bought new "parts" for the area that would touch the skin. My daughter takes it to work and pumps. This one was about 2 years old at the time I bought it. Not a single problem with it. When she is done nursing, I will resell it on E-bay. Mazel Tov on your new arrival, Nana

I bought a dual electric pump by The First Years from Walmart for less than $60. It worked excellent at first but problem is, I used it 3-4 times per day and so it only lasted maybe 4 months. So I bought another of the same kind. It didn't last but maybe 3 months. The customer service was easy to contact and was eager to walk me through some troubleshooting but I got frustrated that nothing was working so I just threw the pumps away. I've been pumping/nursing for 10 months now and since I'm down to pumping only once a day, I use a single manual (I'm stubborn and stuck with The First Years brand). A friend of mine bought a Medela pump and said she wouldn't trade it for the world. So, the moral of the story is...spend the extra money and get something reliable and comfortable. You should be able to purchase something from the hospital before you check-out, just ask their lactation consultant. Best of luck to you!

You should contact your insurance company and see if they will pay for the hospital grade breast pump since your baby will be a preemie!

I was able to do that with my twin girls that were born 6 weeks early!

I loved my breast pump that was the same one in the hospital!

Good Luck with your newborn!

A.,

Most hospitals have hospital grade pumps that you can rent for an affordable price. These are top of the line pumps for the serious breastfeeder! But you can find breast pump information from most lactation experts. As a doula, I have taken classes from Sharon Mattess###-###-####, and Linda Worzer###-###-####. I know that Sharon has some pumps in stock that she sells and can help you find a good one at a reasonable price.

Sorry you have been in bed so long, but it will be worth it in the long run. Oh, if you want to contact these women online, their web address is naturalbeginningsonline.com.

Good Luck!

Blessings.

Also, check with the hospital's lactation expert. I sure she would have some info for you also.

A., my post is a bit late but if you have not yet purchased a pump and plan to breastfeed long term, I would recommend a Lansinoh pump. I purchased mine at Target for $149. This may still be somewhat expensive, but it is a very good quality pump and still half the price of most of the Medelas. Worked great for me and I typically used it 2-3 times each day for about 6 months.

I had a Medela Single Deluxe and it worked great for me. I also had an Avent manual that I wouldn't trade for the world. If you're going to be staying at home with baby I wouldn't recommend a double elecrtric for as little as you'll be usung it. I did great with my singles and was able to store PLENTY of milk for my daughter. Just stick with it, and it will get easier over time as you and your baby adjust. Good luck!!

I don't know where you are located or where you are having your baby, but I can tell you that you surely need to talk to a nursing/lactation consultant soon after you deliver, if not before, and she can give you your best options. I can't tell you how important it is that you talk to one: I came from a family of nursers and have several friends that do too but nothing beats the info and assurance given by a pro, believe me! They offer all sorts of tips, including what pumps to use, buy, rent, etc.
Often, you can rent a commercial pump (the absolute best for establishing your milk supply) directly from the hosp. you delivered and then the lactation consultant can help you in finding a good pump that is best for you and in your price range. I rec. Medela, but like others say, they are expensive and others may work fine for what you need. FYI though, Medelas are very good and very easy to find and buy supplies, replacement parts, ect. for and they don't change model parts often, so you don't have probs. finding repair stuff.

Also, FYI, I had my baby in a rural hosp. where nursing consultants were not available, so I found out that Harris Hosp. in Ft. Worth has a WONDERFUL nursing center on the ground floor full of products, info and consultants. You can call and talk to them for free (anmdn they have a 1-800 #) or just walk in the shop and talk to them for free. However, you must pay if you make a private opt and if you have any probs, I would highly suggest this. Many insurances cover it just the same as a dr. appt, but mine did not-just another source for you. And they have all the medela pumps there for purchase (though you might find cheaper elsewhere) and out for you to look at and examine.

Hope I helped and best luck! I found nursing very easy once established and much more conv. than worrying about bottles and much cheaper! Hope it is as great for you!

Best of luck!

T.

The Ameda Purely Yours is WONDERFUL and much cheaper than Madela. You can even check on the Madela (Medela ?? not sure on spelling) website and see a comparison with the Ameda Purely Yours and Medela Pump N Style. They are almost exactly the same except Ameda's motor only weighs 1 lb as opposed to Medela's 7lbs (doesn't sound like a big difference, but I guarantee you that you would notice with all the other stuff). Go to www.healthchecksystems.com and you can find it there cheaper than anywhere, and they don't charge shipping. I did a ton of research through my pregnancy, and I searched tons of sites to find that this is the best. I got mine in about a week. I used it for the 12 months that I breastfed, and it worked the same the last day I used it as it did the first. It also only takes 6 AA batteries rather than the big batteries that others take. My close friend had the pump in style, and I don't know how many times she was lugging that thing around telling me how jealous she was about mine being so small. I'm very thankful I found this particular brand. I have another friend who has been using hers for 14 months and loves it too.

Good luck, and congratulations!!

I bought a Medela - which are more pricey - but if you took any classes at your hospital (birthing or breastfeeding, etc.) see if you get a discount at the hospital store. I delivered at Baylor and because I took classes, I got a discount at their store - Simply Mom's. It was a great discount. I love my breast pump.
You can also rent them at many hospitals until you are able to get one. Since you are having a c-section - you may need to start pumping before your milk comes in...that is what I had to do. It helped get it going for me. I started pumping at the hospital a couple days after delivery. I had to start supplementing with formula for a few days because my son was losing too much weight. I pumped and poured that in the formula so he was sure to get the colostrum. This is the order I did it...
Nursed him
My husband gave him formula
I pumped while he was getting formula
Then I used what I pumped at the next feeding

Congratulations!!! I'm proud of you for nursing! It's a lot of work - but you have a lot of great resources here on Mamasource.
