Hi moms -

I have heard about certain tests that allow you to ascertain the sex of the baby prior to the 20-week sonogram. One internet-based company, for instance, sends you a kit, which you then use to send a blood sample to the company's lab for testing. Have any of you heard of something like this? If so, could you please provide more information? We'd like to know as soon as possible (and certainly in advance of the 20-week mark) whether we are having a boy or a girl.

Thank you very much for reading, and for your assistance! I look forward to your informative responses.

Hi, D.
A friend of mine tried one of these early blood tests she had seen on the net, and it came out she was having a girl. When she had the 20-week ultrasound done, it was a boy! She asked for a refund, and after fighting with the company, she finally got her money back. Good luck!

I have never heard about sending in your bloodwork, ect. I would just go to a 3D/4D ultrasound place. My husband and I didn't have the 3D/4D, we just had the gender check that was done in black and white. I was 15-16 weeks pregnant. We personally wanted to be surprised by my daughters facial features, ect. but we still got some pictures and we were confirmed it was a girl.....Good luck!

Hi - We did the mail-away blood test when I was pregnant because my husband wanted to know as soon as possible. They correctly predicted a girl.

They send you a kit and you have to just put a few drops of your blood on the form. You have to do it when there isn't a "male" presence in the room (i.e. husband, other son, etc.) so that there aren't any Y chromosomes in the sample. (Seemed a little odd b/c there could be some dust or a hair from my hubby floating around the room.) You then send it via Fed Ex (they include the supplies) and they apparently only hire women (sounds weird I know) but that way the samples are clean.

Our doctor sort of laughed at us and joked about reading tea leaves too, but it worked for us.

Good luck.

Hi,

I went to an Ultrasound school ($25.00) around 12 weeks to find out the sex. It as very easy to tell the sex. They made a video tape and took pics. With my daughter they told me they weren't forsure since she showed a quick peek and the testies in a boy can drop later. With my other 2 boys they were right on. With the last child I purchased a Urine test (sounds like the Draino lol)it was cheap. The test color was hard to tell so I called the company and waited 2 weeks and the test was so green... Yep another boy. LOL I dont know about the blood ones but I sure went spend much money try all the lil tricks these ladies give to see. Good luck.

I have heard of the blood test one. I never did it because of the cost and time it took, but they say they will refund your money if they are wrong. The other one out there is a test you pee in. This is bogus I think...and from my research even dangerous. Some people claim it blew up, literaly exploded in their face. Also there is the draino method, which is also said to be explosive. You can find a place to get a 3d/4d unltrasound done as early as 12 weeks! Some places will wait until 15 weeks, but that is a whole month sooner than your doc would tell you! My last two pregnancies I got the 3d ultrasound at 15weeks. Good luck...and I know the feeling!

Yes, I agree with some of the other responses. It is kind of silly to think that some people think they can pick which sex they want. There might be a chance of the sex you want, but it is up to God!!! This child is a blessing whether or not you are even blessed with a boy or a girl, or not.

Hi D.,
Most 3D ultrasounds can detect gender bw 11-14 weeks. This is determined by a fetal medicine doctor at your first screening, but the technicians can usually see it too. I found out I was having a boy at 11.5 weeks! It is very common. good luck!

To add, I just remembered that it is called the "first trimester screening", and it must be done bw 11-14 wks for effectiveness, it's where they measure the nuchal translucency and check for a nose bone (indicators of normal vs. downs) and take a few droplets of blood to analyze your risk for various things. It is pretty standard amongst CA doctors, though all my pregnant friends throughout the US and Canada have had it done. It was routine for me. All my girlfriends decided to find out the gender during this process as well, The baby has to cooperate though! I wouldn't trust the mail-away blood-work. I would only trust it if my doctors were involved.

We found out that we are having a girl and a boy at our 16 week u/s, so you shouldn't have to wait until 20 weeks to find out.

I've never heard of sending a blood sample in order to find out the gender, but it sounds interesting....though I think it's more exciting to see the babies on u/s when you find out. That's just my preference. Also, since I'm having one of each, a blood or urine test wouldn't be able to distingish between the two and come up with both genders.

Congratulations!!! At work we've done several different methods prior to the sonogram to obtain the baby's sex. So far the one that has worked the best of the many old wives tales has been using a teaspoon of crystal draino mixed with your urine. If it is green it is a boy if it turns brown it is a girl. The best we've been able to figure is that the testosterene or estrogen level is what causes the color reaction. We've tested on 10 different pregnant co-workers with about a 90% accuracy. Good luck.

I did some cytogenetics back in my traditional biomed days. They can theoretically do it since baby’s blood is “mixed” with yours and will be present (in a very small amount) in your sample. Now if they find “Y” chromosome – they will be very happy – they can surely say that you have a boy. If all they see are “X” chromosomes – they really can’t say if it is because your blood sample had too little of baby blood or is it because you have a girl. Ask them for guarantees and financial backing of the result (I assume they do it for profit, not for the love of humanity: )
Good Luck

I don't think the Baby is a boy or a girl until at least 14 weeks. I don't know how a blood test would tell you? Seems bizarre. You could pay for an earlier ultrasound(get a 4d one and see your baby in detail :) ). Just make sure you do it when sex can be determined. It's hard to wait but you still have plenty of time to prepare. Congrats on your baby!

I don't know where you are located, but Ultrasound Me in Costa Mesa does and early gender ultrasound for $25 that they guarantee to be 98% accurate. We went with this pregnancy and found out we were having a boy at 13.5 weeks. I've had a few ultrasounds since and he is STILL a boy . . . I've had quite a few friends that went there as well, with the same accuracy. Best of luck!! When I was thinking about going there, I asked about them on here . . . here's the link to that post.

It's phony. They charge a lot and are right 50% of the time so even when the refund the money the other 50% of the time, they still make plenty. If doctors could figure it out with a simple blood sample, they would do it for you.

Hi D.,

I had a baby boy last May and knew I was having a boy at 14 weeks when I had a CVS test done at the doctor's. I had the CVS since I am over 35 to check genetics, but at the same time they determine if the baby has x or y chromosomes...the indicator of the sex of the baby.

My husband and I used one of these with our second child. I don't remember the name of the company, but it was a kit where you sent back paper with your blood sample on it. It was accurate for us, it said boy and we had a boy.

D.,

I just called my friend who did this, and she had the same result as Dani's friend. Except she was never given a refund because they sent her a letter from their 'legal team' with the 'fine print' from the contract.

I did the 3-D Ultrasound with a girlfriend of mine at about 13 weeks, and I could see my baby was a boy...but, hers was blocking its nether regions and she had no idea until even after her 20-week sonogram. So, I guess it's all up to our kids even at that age!

Good Luck and congrats.

I feel a little silly responding with this, but we used an "old wives' tale"-type method and it was accurate with both of our babies. I believe this comes from the Chinese. Mom - you need a strand of your hair, then lie down or recline while Dad strings the hair through his wedding band (I believe it needs to be gold) then holds it very still over your belly. If the ring begins to move in a circular pattern over your belly, you are supposed to be having a boy. If it moves in a back-and-forth pattern over your belly you are supposed to be having a girl. Again, this is a bit silly, but we did it for fun with both babies and it turned out to be correct both times. Even if it wasn't, it was pretty cool to see the ring start to move without anyone touching it (my husband really braced himself so he would be sure it was not his movement causing the ring to move).

If you find nothing else, hope you don't go too crazy waiting for 20 weeks! I remember how hard it was to wait!
