Bossy and Tantrums

My 3 year old daughter is very bossy and throws the worst tantrums over small things. For instants, if we go somewhere as a family and my husband gets the baby out of the car and starts walking to the door without my daughter she throws herself on the ground and cries or will just stand there and refuses to move screaming out for him. It's not just with daddy, its with anyone that is with me whether they have her brother or not. It's like she doesn't understand the concept that people can walk before her and we will still be together, if that makes any sense. Also, she is bossy. When she screams in the house I say to her, "We don't scream in the house we scream outside" or "Stop screaming" she replies with "NO mom you stop, I'm the boss not you." I know kids go through stages but sometimes I just want to pull my hair out with frustration. Any suggestions on how to steer her in the proper direction of being respectful will be so helpful!

why not threaten to take something she really likes away from her or threaten with time out? i know the word threaten sounds really ugly, but i cant think of a better one at the moment.

when she throws a tantrum, ask her is she wants (favorite movie or toy) when she gets home. if she says yes, then ask her to stop or she'll be banned from it for the rest of the day. its like tiny groundings, if you know what i mean. she doesnt get this or that for the rest of the day. my three year old usually responds to spongebob.

or, if thats too old school for you, then put her in time out. make her sit in the car for three minutes, or a randomly placed chair thats in a boring spot of the house. you have to tell her she will be in time out for 3 minutes, (one minute for however old she is) for throwing a tantrum or doing whatever she did wrong that you dont agree with. you have to make sure to explain everything in detail until she calms down, and try to help her calm down by talking to her in a non-threatening tone and helping her breathe slowly, and make sure to tell her you love her but thats shes being disrespectful to mommy and daddy.

make sure to praise her for sitting still and quiet like a good girl, and remember that she is three and that she wil grow out of it. i know its embarassing, believe me, but you just have to say to yourself that shes your daughter and shes acting her age. if others dont like it then who cares? let them deal with it. you have enought to deal with yourself. haha.

hope something helped. these usually work for me.

ps. what do you do for a babysitter? i need someone for weekends and know no other mothers in owensboro. i need some help fiding a good reliable person for friday and saturday nights after my boys are asleep!

Oh, what a fun stage...lol...sarcasm doesn't really translate over the computer, does it?
I'd say tell her she's not the boss and every time she says something like that to you, put her in her room for a time out. Take away toys and books so she can't just go play by herself. Whatever you do, don't encourage the behavior by laughing or giving in.
I really don't know what to tell you about the tantrums:( Maybe she will just out grow it as she sees the people ahead of her are just that, ahead of her? Maybe they could tell her they are going ahead to open the door for her so she knows she's included?
Good Luck!

Time out. She has to know that screaming is not the way to act when you are upset. For Kaylee, who is Two. I first warn her that if she can't tell me what she wants and keeps screaming then she is going to time out. If she dosen't stop with that, then time out it is. You can use anywhere, as long as there is nothing to play with. Ignore her for however many minutes old she is then go to her. Sit next to her and ask if she knows why Mommy put her in time out. She usually shakes her head yes, but she is only two and can't always explain, so I tell her what she did wrong and what she should of done and ask her to tell me sorry and give me a hug. I tell her I love her, and it's business as usual.(If she tries to get down, quietly walk over, pick her up and put her back and tell her that her time has start over. she is not allowed to get down until mommy gets her).

Have you tried calmly telling her that screaming and crying is for babies, and it will not get her what she wants? Then tell her that you'll talk with her once she can talk quietly like a big girl. If she throws a huge fit tell her you'll talk to her when she's calmed down and then stand by and totally ignore her until she's done. She'll quickly realize that if she gets no response at all that the fits and screaming aren't working. She probably keeps throwing fits now because as soon as she screams for her daddy or you she gets a response--whether it's good or bad. The same goes for if she's being demanding or screaming in the house. Tell her how to talk "like a big girl" and then ignore her completely until she complies. Of course she's acting normal for her age, so don't worry--just don't give her any attention when she's acting out aside from initially explaining what you expect from her. I promise it'll do the trick after a few days!
