Birth Control That Doesn't Lower Sex Drive

I was various oral BC pills for years and each one of them lowered my sex drive. We are currently 26 weeks pregnant with our second and final child so permanent birth control is where we are headed. However, at 30 I hate to do something right away. I would like to do it once our second child is about a year old and I am 100% sure we are finished. I was thinking an IUD or maybe pills but with both I am very concerned about my sex drive being low. Also, what about nursing? Does that affect the IUD? I do not want to get pregnant again and don't wan to take any chances. My husband will be the one getting the permanent fix. Thanks for your thoughts.

What can I do next?

You mean birth control isn't supposed to work by creating celibacy? ;)

My obgyn put me on such a low dose of birth control b/c of the no sex drive and depression issues it caused me to have, he told us it wouldn't be hardly effective at all, and we would have to use condoms with it anyways, so we don't even mess with pills anymore.

I think your best option is probably the non-hormonal IUD. I can't say for 100% sure but logically I don't see how nursing would be affected by an IUD or vice versa.

I've been back on bc pills for a little over three years now and it def killed my libido, among other side effects. And I've changed pills several times. I've heard in the past that if one pill affects your libido they all most likely will, since they're all just differing levels of hormones. My husband is actually having a consult this week with a urologist and will get a vasectomy shortly thereafter. I can't wait to get off the pill!

I am on mirana and love it for the reason that I NEVER have to worry about taking a pill everyday, or getting a shot ever 90 days..They insert it and thats that and your good for 5 years. I dont get my period which I find nice. There are some side effects and one of them is a lowered sex drive. Yes my sex drive has decreased but I dont know if that just because I am a mommy now or if its the birth control. Good Luck and congrats on the new one :)

Depends on the IUD.

Mirena is hormonal... so it may or may not effect your sex drive. It, just like birth control pills, is not effective during antibiotic courses. No idea about nursing.

Paraguard is copper, and has no hormones at all. So no hormonal side effects (like sex drive, or menses shortening or legnthening -aka after the 1st couple of super crampy periods your periods are the same as when you were TTC). It doesn't effect nursing at all, again, because there are no hormones whatsoever. Also unlike Mirena, which has about the same failure rate as birth control pills when taken every day, paraguard has the same failure rate as a tubal ligation... and is also good the moment it is inserted (no waiting period)... and is NOT effected by antibiotics.

DO get muscle relaxers (otc midol, or Rx) for those first 2-3 periods, though. They're doozies.

Loved my Paraguard IUD, no hormones, no drop in sex drive.
