Birth Control Sponge

Has anyone ever used this as their only form of birth control? How well did it work?

Keep in mind that my fiance and I have sex once (maybe twice) a month (We only see each other on the weekends, at least one weekend is out of the question because I'm on my period, and then the other weekends there is either a family get together that we have to attend or we can't get our son to take a nap... I really can't wait till we buy our house and move in together. Lol)

It is time for my next depo shot, and I really don't want to get it. I don't want to get pregnant right now, or even in the next few months, but I know that it takes a long time (Average is 4-10 months) for the depo shot to wear off. When the time does come for us to have another baby, I want to be able to get pregnant soon after we make that decision (I don't want to have to wait months for the depo shot to wear off). Plus, I always hear these horror stories of women getting off the depo shot who are never able to have another child because it screwed with their systems too much.

I tried the patch. The side effects were horrible (The cramping that I had was so bad that I had to walk bent over half of the time).

I tried the pill. I have a beautiful son because of that. Lol. I just could not remember to take the pills. I tried everything, even setting an alarm on my cell phone.

My fiance WILL wear condoms, but it is really hard for him to climax while wearing them so it's an option but definitely not the best one.

So, what are your experiences with the birth control sponge?

What can I do next?

Look into the Nuvaring. It's a small silicon ring you put in like a tampon. You leave it in for 3 weeks, take it out for 1 week when you have your period and then put a new one in at the end of the week. It's a low dose of the same things in birth control pills.

My sister got pregnant the month after she missed her depo shot appt. So, no, it doesn't take months for it to wear off. I suggest getting your shot.

I didn't even know the sponge was back on the market. It had a bad reputation back in the early 90s. I knew one woman who used it and ended up getting accidentally pregnant pretty quickly while using the sponge.

I loved the sponge. The pill gave me horrible PMS-- weight gain ect. The sponge worked and I wasn't on horomones all the time.

I'm post menapause now so it's not a concern for me.

I believe they say the same thing for all birth control methods - that it **can** take ___months to get pregnant. I was on the pill on and off for over 10 years. It took me less than 2 months to get pregnant when I got off the pill after at least 7 consecutive years of taking it faithfully.

Don't believe horror stories. Everyone will tell you one. Who knows what other factors caused them to not have additional children.

Try Mirena (good for 2-5 years), diaphragm and/or the sponge with a spermicide.

I used them in all of my 20's. Then they took them off the market. I used them again when they came back. We were not very regular either. But I'm fertile mertile. Every time we did not use anything, I became pregnant in just one time for that month.
