Belly-sleeping 14-Month-old Always Waking up with Wet Pajamas!

I know I'm blessed that my wonderful DS generally sleeps through the night -- from about 8-ish to 7:30-ish. But when he does, he always wakes up with the front of his pajamas all wet! I know that his sleeping on his belly probably contributes to the issue, but he's always been a belly sleeper. I've tried putting him in bigger diapers and am searching for the Huggies overnites (went to find it on Monday, but it wasn't in stock, so I tried some Pampers 12-hours -- it didn't work!). In the meantime, does anyone have tips for this issue? Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I finally found Huggies overnites, plus the booster pads that a few people recommended. In addition, we've started giving him his "dinner" bottle earlier, at 6, rather than at 7:30 or 8. The booster pads are about to run out, so I'm going to see soon if we can get along with just the overnight diapers and the earlier bottle. Thanks everyone!

I usually go in to my son's room right before I go to bed and change his diaper. As long as I don't talk to him, he doesn't really wake up, and then he can make it the rest of the night without leaking through.

I had the same prob with both my son and daughter. Usually moving a size up took care of it. For my daughter she needed to be up 2 sizes even though she is a petite lil one. My rule is, the inner padding of the diaper needs to cover from the top of the butt crack to just under the belly button for adequate coverage. I never went by the weight recommendations on the package...my kids were always right in the middle of the recommended weight listed on the package when they needed to move up a size. I would also fold the top of the diaper under to create a inside flap...kind of like a pee catcher LOL...at night.

With my 13 month old son, I put on a 2T/3T generic pullup then a normal diaper (higher in the front). I also put him in the footed one piece pjs. The 2 piece pjs seemed to mess with the diaper.

Well, I mastered this...maybe you can too....
Learn to do the still-sleeping-middle-of-the-night diaper change.
I got so good at this my son never stirred.
Probably a midnight-ish diaper change would make a positive change.
I wouldn't "limit" fluids at 14 months!
Layer sheet/pad/sheet/pad so crib changes are easier.
Do you make sure his winkie is pointing down in his diaper?
Ever tried a maxi pad in the front of the diaper?

Hi,

I had problems with my LO one leaking through the tummy at night as well. I use pampers swaddlers and then add a diaper booster pad. I bought them at babies r us. here is a link http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3844600
They have worked great for me! Haven't leaked out since!

How heavy of a sleaper is he? I used to have to sneak in at about 11pm and change my son so it would not happen, also having a cut off time for fluids so he pees before bed. then roll the top of his diaper to get it a touch tighter. Other than that I am not sure.

I had to do the cut of fluids thing for my middle child, he refused to wear pull ups to bed, after being potty trained but still had night time wets sometimes only, so I cut him off, I would remind him 1 hour before cut off, so he got enough that he was not dehydrated, but emptied the bladder and had time for those fluids to run thru him before bed.

Good luck

We had this issue for a while as well, don't think you need to worry about infection etc as mentioned below it's a pretty normal boy, belly sleeping thing. I made sure to push the winker dink down but it would always pop back up when he had to pee pee. The sleeping diaper change worked but I don't stay up that late so we still had leak over. I put a long overnight pad at the top front of his diaper attached longways to the top and it absorbed the extra, I can't remember the name brand but they were the ones they gave me in the hospital after I had the kids (BIG) I also used some premie diapers layed open and tucked in at one point as well. I don't remember this lasting very long, even though we didn't potty train yet we would try to do a standing pee pee before bed everynight just to see what happened and ( I know this sounds bad) we would "Water the bushes" outside sometimes too. I found that he was having a really big pee pee shortly after he went to bed and starting with an empty bladder was good.

Give him fewer fluids for the hour before bedtime. Honestly, if he's got a full bladder going to sleep, he's going to tinkle all night! We started cutting back on fluids for the same reason and it did work. My son loves having access to water all day long (my husband is a psycho about dehydration after a nasty bout with the flu when he was 8 months old), but having to change the sheets every morning got really old.

Also change his diaper just before going to bed so that it's completely dry.

I have the same blessing. My now 15 month old has been sleeping through the nite since he was 6 months (6-6:30/7). Needless to say it's a long time for one diaper to perform and he hates being awoken to have his diaper changed! Inevitably, however, he often leaked which would wake him up anyway. I did a lot of research (actually called and spoke to all the diaper companies) and found the miracle diaper! The ONLY one that can hold its weight is Pampers Cruisers Ultra. The "Ultra" being the key. It's more absorbent than the plain old "Dry Max" Cruisers although it does have the Dry Max technology as well. Your challenge will be to find someone who actually carries this brand. My suggestion is to call Pampers directly and they can tell you who has it in your area. For me there is only one vendor -- BJs wholesale club. Trust me they work beautifully.

Oh yes I almost forgot. Application is also key. Make sure the front of the diaper is pulled up high over the tummy and even with the back when you fasten it. Bring all excess diaper from the back to the front after fastening. And of course, change right before bedtime. I wouldn't suggest limiting fluids ever. My child drinks lots of fluids all day long and takes down an 8 oz bottle of milk just before bedtime every nite and has not leaked in months.

I wish you well.

I had the exact same problem. I use the organic huggies so I was hesitant to switch to anything that was not organic. However, literally every night my son would wake up wet and crying (he is 17 months). So, I broke down and bought the Huggies overnites and he has not leaked once!!! I found them at Walmart. Try ordering online from diapers.com or amazon if they are sold out.

Your other option is getting up in the middle of the night to change him. I used to do that when my son slept in the bed with us and I never had a problem.

Hi there. I've been in your same situation but with my daughter before she was potty-trained. We fixed it by not giving her any liquids after dinner (about 2 hours before bedtime). This way his bladder will be emptied (or at least less full) before he even goes to bed.

I hope this helps.

Order Huggies Overnites from diapers.com. They always have the size (sometimes the stores run out) I want and you get free shipping for orders over $49. You'll find lots of things you regulary buy to get to $49. I think you can get a $10 off coupon for your first order. I use them to get items that I can't always find at the store. Oh, buy the next size up for your little one. That has worked best for me w/ both of my kids! Good luck!

We have the same problem....still at 27 months! Don't know if I have a solution but I use the Huggies overnights (best I found so far) and I change him while he sleeps around mid-night.

I tried limiting liquids but even still he pees all night long. Some people hold their fluid until evening. I myself do this as well as my mother. I drink lots of water all day and only have to go a few times. But all night I am up going. My ds is just like me....could be yours too.

I did talk to pediatrician and urologist when he was younger to be sure there was no concern with kidneys or anything so if you are concerned you can do that. Otherwise all I have found to work for us is the middle of the night change.

We had the same problem, that our son would wake up all wet. So my mother-in-law bought us from Babies R Us diaper pads, pretty much especially for boys. We put them in his diaper each night and in the morning the diaper is as heavy as a rock and soaked, but he is NOT WET!!! Good luck. I would definitely try them!

We had the same issue. Tried Huggies overnights but they didn't work. Tried Pamper Overnights and they have worked ever since. I guess trial and error on the different ultra and overnight diapers is your best bet. Good Luck!

Try 'LUVS' diapers. I switched from Pampers to Luvs and it helped. Also, as long as he is getting his amount of fluids that he should (throughout the day), then give him his last 'drink' about 1-1/2hrs before bedtime. That should REALLY help. Good luck!

Have you considered cloth diapers? Cloth diaper have the ability to add extra absorbency with inserts called doublers. I personally use Ragababe brand cloth diapers (you can find them on facebook). I think you can find disposable doublers as well to add to the diaper. Or you can buy cloth doublers only if you don't want to invest in cloth diapers totally. You might also try adding an overnight maxi pad to the diaper and see if that helps. Good luck!

My daughter (now almost 4) went through this at that exact same age and the Huggies Overnights were the only thing that worked for us. The Pampers version didn't help at all! It lasted for a while, and I would have to change diaper sizes once she started waking up with wet jammies again, and it lasted until she was in pull-ups and was potty training. It was a giant pain but the Huggies really did help a LOT. When we used those, we had dry pajamas almost every day. Good luck, this drove me crazy at that age but it will eventually pass.

My kids were both belly sleepers and what I do is double diaper at night. My daughter is 4 now so she's been out of diapers for a couple years but my son is only 8 months and we have been double diapering him since he started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks. You just put one over the other and neither of my children had any problems. We use the store brand diapers also.

Cotton balls! Put a pile of them, maybe 6-8 of them in the front of the diaper below the waist band of the diaper. Put the diaper on snug so there is no gap, as it seems like when they sleep (as my son did with his bum up in the air on flexed knees) a gap at the waist is made. I hope this works!

We double diaper at night. Often the outside diaper doesn't even get wet, it just seems to act as an extra barrier and holds everything in. :)
