I am dreaming of redoing my bathroom. Yes - dreaming. It desperately needs to be redone but we don't have the money right now. So I am making plans so that when we do have the money it can be done. We only have 1 bathroom in my house. It's not tiny but it's not very large either. I am thinking about taking the tub out and putting in a large shower instead. Has anyone done that ? We have 2 boys - 9 & 14, my hubby & myself. Everyone prefers showers. Can anyone think of any downside to doing this ? Thanks for any information you can give !

What can I do next?

With only one bathroom I can see it being a downfall if/when you decide to sell. If I was a family with little kids or wanting a family I would need a tub and that would be a no go on the sale. Other than that its what you want. I prefer showers too but I would want at least one tub in the house.

You need a tub for resale. Babies need tubs, not showers.

If you ever plan on selling your home, you'll need at least one tub in there. I can't recommend taking out a tub and replacing it with a shower stall, unless there's another bathroom with a tub.

I just remodeled my master bath and did just that, took out the tub and put in a larger shower. No door, just a walk-around piece of glass. It's awesome!

But, we do have a tub in another bathroom and I agree that it's rather necessary, especially if you plan to resell.

Good luck and I will warn you that bathroom remodels can get pretty expensive!

We prefer showers too, but when we want a bath we are glad the tub is there! We use the tub when we are freezing cold and need to warm up, or when we have aching muscles, just to soak tired feet or to wash awkward oversize items. As many have mentioned you will have problems selling a house without a tub.

It could hurt resale, I wouldn't buy a house without a tub (I have a 3 yo and a 2 mo old, both need a tub for bathing) and I would think most young families wouldn't want to either. Now if you plan on staying forever, then go with whatever you want.

I grew up in a house without a tub, and I'm glad I have one now. We remodelled our small family bathroom recently and put in a deep corner tub with a huge shower rose over it. We didn't put on any curtains or shower glass, but left it totally open. I was afraid of water going everywhere, but the corner tub shape catches all water. Without any shower glass or curtains, it has the appearance of a much larger bathroom.
