Bathing a 9 Month Old

Has anyone found a good way/bathtub to use for a 9 month old? She has pretty much outgrown her infant tub/seat since our kitchen sink faucet isn't high enough. I was thinking of putting it in the bathtub or getting in the bath with her. Any other thoughts? I would like to avoid a sore back! :) Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have always bathed with my children and not used a comercially available "baby bath tub" As they grew older and could sit up and play I sat on the floor and didn't always bathe with them. I would also bring them in the shower if my husband was around to help with a "hand off"

I bathed with my daughter....but since sometimes daddy has to fill in at bath time, we found that just buying a plastic tub, (like for storage) worked just as good on the kitchen counter or table.

I have 9 month old twins and I bath them in bathtub. I have a cushioned mat that I use for my knees and that's all I really need. Buying another tub....in my opinion....is just a waste of money. She's just going to grow out of it...probably sooner than she grew out of the infant tub. As long as you're not going to have her in the tub for a long period of time, you shouldn't put too much of a strain on your back.

When my son turned 8/9 months, I put him in the adult bathtub on his belly with an inch or so of water! He loved it!

Hi M.,

I used an inflatable baby tub (about $14 at Babier R Us or Target) once my girls got a little older. It was easy to drain and the sides are inflatable (padded) so it felt safe. I also purchased a bath seat for my second daughter that we love. She has a tendency to stand up while in the inflatable tub, so this works better for bathing her. It utilizes suction cups to adhere to the tub. I am happy with both products and they are relatively inexpensive to try. Enjoy your little one!

I love our Safety 1st brand tub seat that attatches to the side of the tub. My son is now 8 months old and loves it. Im not sure how long you would be able to use it though. I just sit on the floor next to the tub, its not too h*** o* my back since I am not leaning over holding him.

I used a bath/tub seat. I got it from Toys R Us. It had suction cups on the bottom to prevent it from tipping over. I bought mine years ago from toys r us. Amazon has a model that says it will reduce sore back. Dream Baby Fold Away Bath Seat.

When my son was 11 months old I found myself trying to figure out how to bathe him next. He was too big for the infant tub and his time spent being bathed in the kitchen sink was ending abruptly because he kept splashing water EVERYWHERE! I felt he wasn't big enough for the regular tub yet and really didn't want to start bathing with him. Anyway, I researched baby bath seats and found that many manufacturers had stopped making them because of safety issues. They said that some parents thought it was more of a safety seat and would actually walk away while the child was in it. The bath seat can tip over in a tub full of water, because the suction cups at the bottom wouldn't always stay secure. If/When this would happen the child would get trapped under water and drown. I know...just an awful thought. Anyway, I came up with my own idea. I bought a baby bath seat that I found online (from a manufacturer who actually still made them) and started to use it in a dry tub. We have a shower head that can also be a hand-held nozzle. My son has been using this bath seat since he was 11 months old and he is 25 months old now. It works great and bath time is very quick. I just spray him down gently with warm water, soap him up quickly, so he doesn't get cold, and then just rinse him off with the nozzle when I'm done. Doing it this way, in a dry tub, there is no hazard because he's not sitting in water. It's more like he's taking a shower, but he is safely seated for it. Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope this idea can help you...

We put our son in his infant tub, and put the infant tub in the big tub. He sat in there for a couple of months, then he just went in the big tub all by himself. Hope this helps!

I also used the inflatable type with both of my girls at that age. It's inexpensive and soft, plus big enough for an older baby. And it's cute! By 18 months, my oldest was in the regular tub, and now my 15 month old has joined her. But they both loved their ducky tub during their "transition" to the big tub.

Target sells an inflatable bathtub that looks like a big "rubber ducky" It can sit inside your bathtub or on the floor. I used this with both of my sons. Target keeps in in the baby section and it's about $15...check it out.

Put the infant tub in your big tub. 9 months is too young to take the chance of putting her in the big tub and having her slip and hit her head. It only takes a split second for her to slip. I kept my daughter in the infant tub until she was about a year old.

When my son was around 9 months, I got in the tub with him. That was how I transitoned him from the infant tub to the big tub. I did this for about 3/4 weeks. It worked quite nicely! It was fun for both of us! He now is in the tub by himself and more interested in pull the drain stopper out than playing with his toys. I also purchased a bath mat so he won't slip. Good Luck!

Hello-
I used a tub ring with my kids. It has suction cups on the bottom (not always reliable as it can still tip- so be careful. This gives them some security- or if she is sitting up well which I am sure she is at 9 months, put a towel on the bottom of the tub and it will help her not slip and tip over. Hold her and only put a small amount of water in the tub. Let her splash and wash her. The older she gets add more and more water.

What I used for both of my girls which worked great was a blow up bathtub. It is from One Step Ahead, it is inflatable and it fits inside a regular bath. It is great for travel and comes with a suction cup to hang it up to dry on the wall in the bath. It was relatively inexpensive and well worth it. Onestepahead.com and the also ship really fast.

go to home depot or one of those places and buy a new faucet for $30 that moves side to side and bathe he in the kitchen sink. You could sit in a chair with her. You don't have to bend over the sink. Two of you in a tub is not ideal because you or she could get hurt on the faucet. Or you can put the non slip strips in the tub and you can sit in the side of the tub with your feet in with her while you bathe her...that could be rough on your back depending on how tall you are.

I put my 9 month old in the bathtub with just a little water, enough for her to splash. She loves it. I have a tub seat next to the tub to sit on so I don't have to lean so much! Hope that helps!

At 9 months old your daughter should be old enough to sit on her own. When my kids were old enough to do that I would sit them in the tub with just a little water. Enough for them to splash and play in. Sometimes I would get in with them too, but I didn't have to.

We have actually used an infant bathtub bought in IKEA (I am not sure if the store still carries it, it was about $7) for my daughter since birth. It does not have any contours inside and is similar to a regular bathtub, only smaller and made from plastic. We would normally put it next to the sink in the bathroom during bath time. Soon after, however, we tried getting with my daughter in the bathtub for a few times, then switched to the regular bathtub, us staying outside and her being inside the bathtub. It works great even now (my daughter is now 17 months old).

hi,
If she is sitting up by herself pretty well, then get a sturdy square laundry basket.(not the cheap flimsy ones) the water flows through and if you put toys in, they don't float out of reach. she can use the sides to lean against. It worked well for my kids and my back. they are now 23 and 20. I still have the basket. It was a toy crate for a while too. good luck

im not sure what kind of seat you have butif it can go in thetub id try that. that is what i did as the girls got bigger. i would fill the tub first as the running water can be a little scary/loud. if you are kneeling beside the tub you can get a pad to kneel on or ust us a folded towel. if she doesnt like it at first most kids grow to like it and splash away. you of course you can get in there with her, but its a bit harder getting out when your both wet. good luck. enjoy her.
