So What Happened?

I just want to thank everyone for their suggestions....i just got back from the baby shower and yes I went a little overboard. The games that we played were baby bingo where you fill in your own squares. The rice and safty pin game. Word scamble. We did the onesis with the fabric markers and the index cards with words of wisdom for mom and baby. My mom made the trays. Fruit trays with grapes, strawberries, and cantalupe. She even had chocolate strawberries...She made spagetti and meat sauce. We had nachos and chicken salad plus devil eggs... I filled empty eggs with candy and some had a small baby item. if the guest go the egg with the baby item they got a prize. The prizes were lottery tickets. and we had a drawing with the guest who got diapers and/or wipes and they got a bigger prize. (not lottert ticket) I also gavve out perfumed oil with 8 of the tickets. The mom to be choose 8 numbers and the tickets were numbered so when they won they had to tell me a number and if it was a numbered the mom to be picked they got 2 prizes. We had fun. Thank everyone so much for the ideas.

I just went to a baby shower recently and there was two games played that we a lot of fun: 1)You fill at least 4 bottles with liquid of some sort and see who can consume it the fastest. 2)Take labels off baby food and let guest smell and guess what they are........

One game that I have used with babyshowers I hosted is Price is Right. I love this game. You pick up several small baby needed items, such as baby laundry detergent, rattle, diaper rash cream, baby wash.... (These will be given as gifts to the expected mom) I usually pick up things that most people won't think if buying as gifts but are needed items for a mom).

You give every guest a sheet of paper and a pen. You line up the times for all to see and ask them to guess the price of each item. When everyone has finished their guess. Tell the prices of each item and have them mark how many dollars they were off for each item. The person that was the least off (the lest number of dollars total) is the winner.

I don't like a lot of baby shower games, but this one has had a great response.

Hi J.! I had my baby shower last summer and some of the games we played were the diaper game, you take diapers and put different food in them, like chocolate pudding for example and have your guests try and guess what is in each diaper, the one with the most guesses wins. We also played guess mommy's tummy size, have each guest take some yarn and guess how big the mommy's tummy is, after everyone is done each guest takes their piece of yarn and wraps it around the mommy's tummy, the closet to get it exact wins. Another cute idea that they did for me was have a notebook and they passed it around and each guest wrote down when they thought the baby was going to be born and how much the baby was going to weigh and how long the baby was going to be. It was pretty cool to go back after my son was born and see what everyone guessed. Another cool idea if you decide to give little gifts for winning the baby shower games is have the guest either keep it for themselves or they can give it to the mommy to be =) Hope some of this helps you. Good luck!!

I know you need ideas for food/games, but here's a cheap and easy decoration tip: Put up laundry or fishing line and hang up tiny baby clothes with clothespins (if you borrow clothes from friends you won't have to buy anything) like onsies, socks and overalls (boy)/dresses (girl). I threw a shower for a baby boy and made sure all the clothes I hung were blue and white, and it was adorable. Good luck!

Hi there you can make a cheese ball. 2 pkgs cream cheese, 2 bunches green onions, 2 pkgs smoked beef (where lunch meat is sold), all you do is put cream cheese in a bowl, cut up the green onions and the beef and mix together. You can even put it on tortilla and wrap up. You can also get a package of zety ranck or fiesta ranch (whichever it is called) mixed with cream cheese and put on tortillas and wrap up. You can even take biscuts and put seasoned taco meat in the middle some cheese and fold over and bake in the over until done. You could finger sandwhiches. All the stuff above I have made and everyone loves them. For games you get a roll of toilet paper and measure off how big around they think her belly is, even you can a napkin or paper towel and make it look like a diaper and put something in there and like a raisin or something and tell everything they have to try and find a raisin in the diaper not all with have a raisin in there (you could give out small prizes for the one who find the raisin), you can even play where hand out safety pins to everyone and play a game where you name something and if someone is wearing that color or has that color of hair, or so on and when they have what you call out they give a safety pin to the mother to be, and the one that is left with safety pins wins. I makde diaper wreaths, and they make good decorations as well.

GET YOUR INVITATIONS OUT T-O-D-A-Y!!!!! That's the most important thing. You want plenty of people to show up to give the expectant Mom what she needs.

Second--Keep the party refreshments simple. The fruit and veggie trays sound just right. Maybe some chips and dips, too. You'll want a cake (or cupcakes), and you'll need to order those very soon if you're not going to make them yourself. You can make them very easily and get some little blue plastic baby booties from Hobby Lobby or Party City to decorate them.

As for activities--you can either play games or not. Most people don't care one way or the other. If you do play games, make the prizes something small for the baby. (pacifier, bib, baby bottle, teething ring, etc.) Each "winner" can then give what they've won to the Mom.

Decorate simply with balloons and crepe paper streamers in the appropriate colors.

That should do it. Hope y'all have a great time!

You can get some magazines and have them cut out features from people and other babies to make the baby that looks like what she may have. The mother to be looks at the pictures and picks the winner of the baby cut outs that may look like her baby.

We have played this game at a church party and a baby shower, You label brown lunch bags A-Z and in each bag you place a baby related item that starts with the same letter. Everyone gets a piece of paper and you have to guess what is in the bags. It is lots of fun and doen't cost much money. The bonus is at the end of the game the mama to be has all those little things you don't get like vaseline, or orajel. It also takes alot of time and it is fun to watch everyone get so fustrated!

J., first of all. Don't worry. You can pull off a baby shower in two weeks, no problem! I have thrown a TON and the details are usually pretty easy. The first thing you need to address (if you haven't already) are invitations. You might just do an Evite if you haven't sent any yet. I would get email addresses from your friend and get them out today. Invitations are the hardest part! Getting addresses, having them printed, etc. As for food, buy some baby blue plates and napkins at the dollar store and plasticware. Cupcakes from the store of your choice (get that ordered a few days in advance so they can customize it). If you are in Austin, Round Rock Donuts makes great custom cakes and they are very cheap. Walmart too! Buy a $4 bunch of flowers at HEB and put them in one of your own vases. If you don't have a vase, the dollar store does. :) As for food, if you need easy, trays from Costco, Sams, HEB or Walmart is the way to go. Otherwise, you can buy a pkg of strawberries and blackberries, cut them up and throw them in a bowl (Costco has very large packages cheap!!). You can also make a meatless pasta salad. Penne pasta with store bought pesto sauce (my favorite is Central Market's that you buy by the pound). It's expensive but you don't need a whole lot. A little goes a LONG way. I like to slice grape tomatoes in half and add them in. Little rolls or croisants from Costco or Sams with deli meat and cheese on a platter make great sandwiches. Mix mayonaise with herbs in a small bowl to make a special mayo spread. Looks fancy but very cheap. Maybe a bag full of chips. For drinks, maybe lemonade and iced tea. Cheap and easy. You can play a couple of games. You might choose to get a couple of prizes for the winners. You can find cute (and very inexpensive) notepads at places like Wal-mart and Hobby Lobby. You can pull this off with no problem. ...and cheap! Don't forget all of the trays, bowls, serving utensils and pitchers from your house. You are a very kind person to do this for your friend. Have a great time!

If you have access to Sam's Club or Costco, you can buy some small croissants (sp) and they both sell a really good chicken salad with grapes, nuts, etc or cranberries, apples and nuts. You could always serve that with a big bag of chips.
At a shower I threw, we played a game where I wrote down a bunch of items and everyone had to dig through their purse looking for those items. Ex. toothpick, nail file/clippers/camera (phone works), etc. It's a lot of fund with a bunch of women and mom's since we always carry EVERYTHING in our purses. Hope this gives you some helpful ideas. Have fun at your shower!

A large cookie cake is good to because I've learned alot of people don't eat cake. Maybe some cupcakes with this. Finger sandwiches and chips and a cheese tray with crackers are great foods for this kind of stuff and that is cheap. the toilet paper game is alot of fun also. I went to one were they filled a jar with i think it was animal crackers and you had to guess how many were in it. This could be done with many different things. I also like the one where they have to look in the basket as they walk in and then put the basket up and see how many know what was in the basket. Good luck and I hope you have a blast. Just remember to have fun thats what its about after all.....

Google Baby shower games . . . that is how my neices always come up with fun stuff. . . there are tons of things from fill in the blank nursery rhymes, to unscramble the baby item names, to what is the baby called (animal world names - -lion = cub, etc), or my favorite - 30 seconds to look and then name the things on the table/in the basket, etc,. . . we did one recently where everyone got a toy pacifier (party decoration type) on a necklace length string, if someone heard you say (or tricked you into saying) "baby" they got your pacifier . . . at the end of the party the person with the most pacifiers got a gift bag (Just target or similar dollar isle stuff, nothing expensive)

Food - I like your idea - fruit and veggie trays, maybe some chips and dip (tortilla and queso?), if mama has anything she likes to snack on or anything you know she seems to be craving (what does she eat at work), and of course some punch - there is always the classic sherbert and gingerale - make sure to include a drink that is sugar free - even if it is just ice water

Sounds like fun!

To save money instead of trays of foods, do salads. They go farther and it can be your “food theme.” You could serve fruit salad, green salad, tangy cole slaw, chicken salad, pimento cheese and then have fancy crackers or assorted breads, sliced and then cut in halves.

If you have time you could bake a ton of cupcakes and freeze them till 2 days before the shower. Let them thaw and then ice them. Or you could purchase a sheet cake from the grocery store, have them put “Congratulations” on the icing and you decorate it with fresh flowers.

Serve punch with some ginger ale for a splash or just Iced tea.

The shower game I like is Baby Bingo. Print out blank BINGO cards.
Remember the FREE space in the middle. As each person arrives, have them fill out their Bingo spaces with supplies needed for babies.. Each person will have different ideas and will end up writing them in different spaces.

You make a list of as many as you can think of, I go on Baby registry to look up their
Items…Bottles, diapers, humidifier etc. then when the game begins, call out items one at a time, let people mark off their correct answers, the first person that makes a true Bingo wins. You can continue to play till you get a few different winners.

The other one that is always funny is the toilet tissue game. Have the new mommy stand in front of the group. Pass a roll of toilet tissue around the group and have each person pull the amount of tissue that will go around the mom’s belly. Once each person has their toilet paper tape measure, have them each go up and wrap the tissue around the mom. The person that guesses the closest wins.

the last shower i went to, we played the price is right game with baby items (too high or too low), guessed how many pieces of toilet paper it took to go around the mother-to-be's belly, and a game where each person, or a few volunteers had to see how many clothes they could hang on a clothesline, while feeding a doll and talking on the phone...this isn't a game, but they also passed around a paper for everyone to write some advice.

Hi J..
I hosted a baby shower last Saturday from 2-4pm. I chose this time because it would require less food as it was just AFTER lunch. I hosted by myself so I didn't want a lot of cost and I needed something I could do with minimal help. There were about 20-25 people (40 were invited) who attended, and there was even a little food left. The shower turned out very nice. I made this punch and it was yummy!

Baby Blue Punch
1 2-liter bottle 7-Up ($2)
1 64-ounce white cranberry juice (or white grape)($3)
1 2-Liter Blue Hawaiian Punch (I used the packets and mixed it myself for about 59 cents not including sugar)
8 scoops Pineapple Sherbet (HEB Brand was ($3/Qt)
In a large punch bowl combine punch, 7-Up, and white cranberry juice. Add scoops of ice cream to the top. The sherbet will melt and turn the punch a baby blue color with frothy white clouds floating on the top.

For food, I went to Sam's Club and bought some red and green grapes ($12) and 2lbs of fresh strawberries($4) and put them on a pewter tray. I ordered the turkey/bacon wraps tray from HEB and had them assemble it on my own pewter tray(serves 25 for $30). I also had tea and soda.

We played 3 games:
1. How Big is Mom2b's Belly? I walked around with a spool of baby blue ribbon and some scissors letting each guests pull until they thought it was the right size to go around Mom2b's belly I cut the ribbon and they held onto it until they took a turn wrapping their ribbon around her and the closest one got a prize (a jeweled picture frame $3) (1/2 price at Hobby Lobby)

2. What's in the Diaper Bag? I had a bunch of baby items in a diaper bag. I took them out one by one and placed them on a table for everyone to look at for 30 seconds. I put them back in the bag and let everyone write down (for 1 minute) what they saw. The one who remembered the most items got a prize. (magnet note pads set $2)(Hobby Lobby)

3. My Water Broke! In an ice tray, I put a tiny plastic baby in each hole and filled the tray half full of water. When the "1/2" cubes were frozen I filled it the rest of the way and continued freezing (if you don't do it like this, the baby floats and will end up only partially encased in the cube). I gave each guest an ice cube in a clear plastic cup. The person who's cube melted the fastest without touching it or taking it out of the cup yells "My Water Broke!" and gets a prize.(a scented candle $3) (1/2 price at Hobby Lobby)

For a "Baby Chic" theme, I used a lot of baby blue tulle, baby blue feather boas, glass rhinestones, and silk ribbon. The cake was a double layer with baby blue frosting with fondant polka dots on the bottom layers and fondant zebra stripes on the top layers. I used a lot of baby blue tulle (about $1/yd at Wal-mart) and I used some clear glass votives that I painted with glue and rolled in baby blue fairy dust glitter. With white candles inside, it added a little twinkle to the food table. In the center of the table, over a cream colored floor length table cloth that I rented ($9), I used a box covered with a white fabric remnant and then I "puddled" some tulle on top of the box so I could elevate the cake making it the focal point. The cake was on a pedestal plate so I wrapped a baby blue feather boa around the base. I pinned feather boas all the way around the edge of my round table. I also used some 3" wide baby blue silk ribbon (Hobby Lobby) to accent here and there. Instead of a gift Table, I used my son’s old crib. I took the front off and put a simple white crib sheet (Wal-mart $4) on the mattress and made a "crib skirt" with baby blue tulle. I had the guests put their presents on the crib. It was a hit! I did buy balloons. 16 for ($10) I haven't totaled my expenses yet but I think I did pretty well for what I could afford.
I'm sorry this is so long but I just did this and it is still fresh.

I hope you can use some of it...

We did a "football pot" at my shower. Instead of scores, we lined one side with length and one with weight. Its a dollar to play and the money gets transformed into a restarant gift certificate. (we added an extra twenty bucks to make it a cool 50 buck certificate to Papas restaurants) I feel that people go out of their way to by Momma and baby gifts and this just lets them win a little something.
Also, my sister-in-law bought a basket filled with little odds and ends for babies; i.e, pacis, shampoo, nail clippers. Each person looks into the basket for a few minutes. Then, everyone writes down what they can remember seeing....the most wins.

Have fun!!
Margaret :)

P.S. I would, however, avoid the "poop diaper" game. Since you dont know everyone, you might offend some people. Personally, I think that game is disgusting. Who thought of that one!!??!!

Finger foods are always best at parties like that. You can get great appetizers for parties at Sam's. My sister and I do a lot of parties and we usually hit Sam's for some of our great food ideas and they usually go over really well. A few ideas:
Crackers and Cheese
Dips (fruit and veggie)
spiral sandwiches - Sam's
bite size quiche - Sam's
cream puffs - Sam's
Green Sherbert punch
Of course cake or cupcakes

Almost forgot games. My sister just put on a baby shower for me about amonth ago and we did the following games/activities.
- pulling safety pins out of rice blind folded
- putting your hand in a bag feeling baby items and then trying to write down everything you felt - no peeking
- Using toilet paper to guess how much it would take to wrap around the mother's belly
- And what I really liked was she had everyone write messages on little cards to my son. Some were advice, some were things about my husband and I and others were things to expect when he gets older.

Fruit and vege trays sound good. I would also plan on a cake or cookies. As for games, we played 2 games at my shower:

Start with a bowl filled with uncooked rice and the tiny gold safety pins. You have to cover your eyes, then reach in the bowl and pull out as many safety pins as possible in a minute (or less time depending on how many people). It is harder than you would think.

Game 2: Fill up a tiny container (like the Tupperware keychains that they used to give out at parties) with 25 tiny things (back of an earring, eraser, Cheerio, rice, safety pin, etc.). Pass the container around so that everyone can look at it and think about it. Then set the time for 5 minutes and have everyone make a list of what they think is inside.

There should be a small prize for both games. It could be a fancy tablet or a candle.

Another GREAT thing that was done for me at my baby shower was the hostess had small pieces of paper for each guest to write their best baby tip on and then they had to put the paper in the envelopes that came with a set of thank you cards and address the thank you cards to themselves. At the end, I got some great tips and my thank you cards were already addressed. (The hostess gave me the cards, too.)

Any decorations should be useful things that the Mom could use. Like a baby blanket as the table cloth and a "cake-like" centerpiece made out of disposable diapers.

Good luck.

I had a baby bootie cake for my shower. They had chips and salsa, caso (sp), and veggie/fruit tray. Other than that I really dont remember the food. I got everyone to write on a card saying words of wisdom or sweet things to the new baby. The origonal plan was to have them on an index card and then tape them to a cut out card stock woodland animal. Then I was going to hang them in the room. My hostest never understood and printed out the little cards for people to write..it was still sweet though.

How about some sandwich quarters? Depending on the time of day, veggies, dip and sandwich fourths may be good. You can add cake and punch. Some people are into fancy food, some are into healthy food but you should just do what you are comfortable with and what you can afford. One of my most treasured shower gifts was the result of a game we played. All of the guests were given a half sheet of paper that had already been pre-punched with holes. They were asked to write their best mom advice on the front and why they thought I would make a good mom or their thoughts on motherhood in general on the back. Then the hostess put them all together, tied them with blue ribbon and it is a treasure to this day. Some days I read the fronts and some days I needed the backs! Most of all, don't stress out, don't go all overboard with stuff you can't afford. I'm sure people will send a lot of games and everything will turn out great!

Sloppy Joes are always easy and affordable. If you're already doing veggies and fruit trays, add some chips. then you've got something hot (keep warm in crock pots. Sandwich meat and cheese can get awfully expensive to do sandwiches, and the sloppy joe can be frozen if you've got any leftover, as can the buns.

Keep it simple and check out the platters that HEB or Randalls offers. I've used both of these stores for parties and they are always a hit! Cupcakes are also so easy. The veggie and fruit trays are great ideas.

I've done the onesies and it was great! My friend got 20 different little outfits! You could also do the guess the baby food game. This is where you get jars of baby food and have people try to guess what it is either by smelling or tasting (up to them). The clothespin game is pretty funny. Put a bunch of clothespins on a wire hanger, then each guest has to try to remove as many pins as they can with 1 hand.

Good luck!! You are so great to do this for your co-worker!

Subway is easy. Cupcakes are a hit.

At wal-mart in the crafts are a bunch of hidden treasures. THey have small naked plastic babies around the food(in crafts section) Put those into unsettled jello for a game.Flash finished jello bowl at each guest and have them guess how many babies are in the bowl and write it down. Closest guess wins.

Few bottles of paint, paper plates, brushes, babie onsies. Have who wants to participate paint on the onsie for the baby. Mommy gets to choose the best one. I loved this at my shower. I threw my favorites in a frame and hung it in her room.

Baby pins. Everyone gets one as soon as they arrive. Whoever says baby must give theirs up to who catches them. Most pens at the end wins. IF you are having people over for a while make sure to end the game after a couple of hours.

Toilet paper. Each person takes as much as they is the size of her belly.wrappe around to see.

Take a diaper number 1, 2, 3, 4,5 however many you choose and take candy bars and melt in microwave then drop in diaper. Each diaper should have a different kind of candy bar inside . Same thing. People write down what kind of cancy bar is inside each diaper.
My friend had a prize box. Candles, hand lotion, chap stick, Key chain...I thought it was kind of expensive but wheatever you can fit in the budget.

I love the famous mothers game. It's a good mixer, as well. If you have 20 people attending, write the names of 20 moms, 1 each, on 20 index cards. Tape one to the back of each attendee (don't let them see!). Once you start the game, each person can ask yes or no questions to the other guests to figure out who they are. First person to guess correctly wins. We did this at a baby shower for a friend who's husband and one other hubby came. I didn't think they'd want to play, but they were the ones who enjoyed it most! Try to make them all slightly difficult. I.e., steer clear of Presidents wives. Those are always first to be guessed. I used names like Claire Huxtable, Mother Goose, Carol Brady, etc. =) Have fun! Another idea is to have someone make a diaper cake and have the guests guess how many diapers went into it. Whoever guesses right wins a prize and mommy-to-be gets the cake. They aren't too difficult to make. You can find instructions online. Since it's Spring, you can carve a watermelon to look like a buggy and use orange halves for wheels (directions online) and serve fruit salad out of it. That's always a hit. Have fun!!!

I throw baby showers and wedding showers all the time and I would say, BUY the food already made. Costco is a girl's best friend because the food is affordable and great. That frees you up to spend more time on the things that matter.

I didn't want games at my baby shower so my girlfriends did a "onesie" station. They got white onesies in several sizes. Every one was given stensils and brushes with stensil paint and each of them painted me a onesie for my baby girl. It was so neat. The also put their initial on the back. It was personal, creative and meant a lot. For easy food ideas, go to Costco. They have great party food. I helped hostess a baby shower Saturday and we had Jason's Deli for the food. Pasta, salads and finger sandwich's. We just took them our nice silver bowls and they put it all in there for us. Or you can just transfer it to your nicer platters etc when you get home.
Have fun!

For food... fruit and veggies with dips. Cream puffs from Sam's. Cake, punch, (and here is an easy one! 2 bottles of Ginger Ale, Celestial Seasonings Rasberry Zinger Tea. Take 3 bags and put them in the bottles and put them in the frig overnight and then pour in pitcher or punch bowl and it's ready!)
You can get everyone to sign note cards, or index cards with advice for the new mom. And you can have a receiving blanket with fabric pens and get everyone to sign their name and a "well wishes" note.
Games: take clothes pins and give everyone one and tell them they can't say the word "Baby" and if they do someone else takes their clothes pin and whoever has the most at the end wins. The "prize" goes to the new mom though :) The baby animal game, you have a list of 15 to 20 animals on a sheet you give everyone. Then tell them they have 3 or 5 minutes to write the correct names of the baby animals. For example, Cow - calf, Kangaroo - joey, etc.... (just google baby animal names.) Again whoever has the most wins. Baby pictionary, like the normal game but you think of baby things for everyone to draw (diapers, bottles, pacifiers, bibs, cribs,etc...) and split up into 2 teams or more. Whoever guesses the most wins. Hope this helps!! :)

Hi,
My daughter just went to a baby shower and shared the most fun game
the host buys a number of onzies- all white- sizes newborn to 12 months- an assortment of sizes- and one for each guest expected to attend- have some cardboard pieces just to insert into the garments and a whole lot of perm markers- each guest ddraws or writes on the little onzies- something individual- and creative- then the mom to be has all new personalized little suites for the new baby and can remember each guest as they are being used....it was a lot of fun for the guests and the new mom.
good luck and blessings
