Anyone Else Without Maternity Insurance?

I was wondering if there was anyone else out there who does not have maternity insurance and has either had a baby without insurance or plans to??? I no longer have maternity insurance now that I am not working outside the home. I do have a private, individual plan that would cover a catastrophe, but not anything maternity-related. My husband works for a small business and we cannot get on a plan through that. I know we want to have another baby within the next year or so, but I am scared to be pregnant and deliver without insurance. I will be a scheduled c-section next time. Has anyone else dealt with this, and if so, what did you do? We do not qualify for any type of assistance.

When I had my son 3 yrs ago, I did not have maternity coverage. I found that the hospital would let you pre-pay for the delivery at a discount. I pre-paid by the end of my 7th month, and it cost $3000. According to them, if I had waited until after the birth and had them bill me, the cost would have been $8000-$10,000. The other nice thing about pre-paying was that it also locked me in to discounted rates on services....I ended up having a c-section, so I had to pay that after the birth, but the discount rate was only $1500.

I also pre-paid my Dr, which was an additional $3000. So, my total was around $7500 for everything....much better than waiting to be billed!

You will definately want to discuss it with your Dr...they may have more suggestions for you too. I have heard that not all hospitals offer a pre-payment plan, so check it out early!

As of last summer, almost any expecting mother may qualify for medicaid benefits. You may not qualify for assistance now, but pregnancy makes a lot of difference. Believe me, I don't qualify for it normally, but I got it with my last pregnancy and I'm getting it now for my second. I know before last summer, you had to meet certain financial requirements, however that law has since been changed. They've reformed the requirements because too many women and children are not getting the care they need. Medicaid will pay all your bills, including any unpaid bills you've racked up in the 3 months prior to getting on medicaid. You will be covered up to 90 days after the baby is born, and the child will automatically have medicaid for the first year. In order to be approved, you must be pregnant. If you apply for it before you are pregnant, you will be applying for it like any other person and will be denied if your income and home situation do not fall into their requirements, which is why you think you don't qualify.

As soon as you find out you're pregnant, go down to the office, fill out the app there and leave it with someone. They will give you a form to take to your doctor to confirm your pregnancy. After that form has been sent back to the medicaid office, you should be approved within a few weeks, if that long. Not having insurance is a bad thing these days, with hospital and doctors bills being so high. My son was in the NICU for 20 days and I received a copy of the bill that medicaid paid, the amount was $49,450. That's a lot of money, even with a payment plan, you're talking years! If medicaid denies you, keep trying until you get it! Being pregnant exempts you from the obligatory interview too, just so you know. You're almost guaranteed to get medicaid if you're pregnant. Good luck!

I know you mentioned not qualifying for assistance but you may want to try for pregnancy medicaid since you are no longer working.
Medicaid is alot easier to get on with pregnancies vs. someone just trying to get on medicaid for health insurance.
I qualified for medicaid with my pregnancy but not for regular medicaid health insurance after having my baby.
You may want to give it a shot if you become pregnant.
Good luck!

I am in the exact same situation as you are. I looked into he Maternity Card but decided against it. You may want to take a look at their site and decide for yourself www.maternitycard.com I called around hospitals and doctors and asked for a quote for their "Cash prices". I ended up choosing Trinity Medical Center in Carrollton. They quoted me $4500 for mother and baby with a 3 day stay and a C-section. I also found a wonderful doctor who delivers there and he quoted me $2900 including routine lab work and one sono. There will also be a $400 doctor assist for the C-section + anestesia (I can't get Pinnacle to return my call, but it doesn't matter since they handle most local hospitals anyhow.) My advice is for you to call around and ask around. Just be sure you find out what is included in everything. One doctor's office gave me a price and then luckily I asked about lab work and they said I would be on my own for that and it typically runs over $1000. Your regular insurance would probably cover the baby once he or she is fully born (mine does) so you shouldn't have to worry about that - but call them and check anyway. Good luck.

I have a very good friend who us self-employed and ran into the same issue as you. She called around to several hospitals and found that if you call them in advance and let them know that you are a private pay c-section that they offer an all-inclusive package. Believe it or not, she only paid about $200 more than what we paid with insurance. She ended up at Harris Methodist SW (they offered the best price).

There is also a state program that will reimburse your private health insurance premiums if you qualify for pregnancy medicaid. Our entire family premium was reimbursed for a full year after the baby was born. Look under the Medicaid HIPP program on the website. I was very lucky the case worker at our hospital told us about this program.

Amy is right about being exempt from the regular qualifications for medicaid when you are pregnant. My sister-in-law just found out she is pregnant and my brother makes a lot of money but they don't have insurance and she is on medicaid.

My husbands small co insurance did not offer maternity coverage either. Money wise I did not qualify for medicaid UNTIL I became pregnant after which it is MUCH easier to qualify since they really want you to have good prenatal care. I just filed for pregnancy medicaid but it covers me on any kind of medical care and prescriptions as well. If you get on medicaid my OB accepts all medicaid but Amerigroup and she is soooooooo AWESOME!! I had a lot of moms on here recommend her and I see why! Let me know and I will pass a long her info as well! Good luck!

Someone told me once that if you have a c-section, whether it is scheduled or not, it must be covered by your regular medical insurance in the state of Texas. It is considered a major-medical procedure. You may want to ask or ob/gyn if this is right or not. Also, check around at different hospitals for prices. When I had my second, we did not have maternity insurance, and Harris HEB was about $1800 less than Baylor Grapevine. You just have to pay ahead of time if I am not mistaken. Also, if you pay for anesthesia there in the hospital, you save $500 dollars. The anesthesiologist took our credit card right then and there. In addition, some ob/gyns will offer you a discount if you are uninsured and will work with you on payments. Its really not that bad. We paid about $3000 total out-of-pocket for our second child, however that was a natural birth. Good luck!
