Anyone Else Do Stupid Things When They Were Pregnant?

Hi everyone,

I am very mad at myself this a.m. I am 28 weeks pregnant and seem to be messing up so much, yesturday especially. My garage door broke yesturday and my husband was working late and I could not get ahold of him. I was really nervous about going to bed with my garage door open. I tried pulling it down manually and got it 3/4 of the way down when it got stuck and would not budge any further. I went into panic mode. The next thing I know I am really pushing h*** o* the garage door to get it to budge. I forgot I was pregnant until I felt a tightening in my abdomen. I am so upset at myself today. What is wrong with me? Last week UPS delivered a package and when I opened the door he handed it to me. I took it without thinking, it was from my husband's work, and it was sooo heavy. I was upset with myself that day for taking the package without even thinking. Is this normal? Why am I not thinking of my baby first?

Thanks,

N.

I locked myself out of the house about 6 times when I was pregnant. It got to the point where my husband just programmed the locksmith's phone number into my cell.

Me too.....I for some reason thought that I needed to have my last childs name with two syllables like my boys, and ended up chosing a name that is not my favorite. I am kicking myself now and know I was just not in the right mindframe to choose a name that pregnancy.

You are just doing things you would normally do. I remember, during nesting, I just had to move our livingroom around and it contained a PIANO. Did I move it? Yes, I did. I had no bad affects from it, did it slow and easy, but I'm sure it wasnt the smartest thing to do. We arent in our "right" mind while pregnant.... lol

hon, don't beat yourself up. Sometimes you will forget your limitations. I am not allowed to lift anything more than 15 pound but my 48 pound child was hurt and crying and my instinct was to pick him up. Stuff happens. :)

You are pregnant, not sick. Pregnancy is a completely normal state of being for a female. You will not hurt the baby, it is well protected. Think of all the things our female ancestors had to do just to survive and the things women still do in underdeveloped countries. They work in the fields, haul water on their backs after hiking to get it, fix all meals completely from scratch, wash the laundry in the river, tend to all the other children, tend to the farm animals, and so on. You are fine.

You've got pregnancy brain, don't beat yourself up over it :) Baby is fine! Take these as reminders to take it easy :)

When I was preggers with my first, not thinking, I went horseback riding when I was 4 months along. In hindsight, BAD IDEA! What if I had gotten thrown off, or the horse fell on me? Dumb.

WIth my 3rd, we moved when I was 7 months along. LOL @ big fat pregnant me thinking that was a good idea!! I was the only one home during the day to do the packing. When I'm not pregnant, my fiance calls me 'bionic' because I have no problem moving furniture by myself. This last move, being pregnant, just about killed me not helping with the heavy stuff.

I also got in TWO car accidents within 10 days of each other when I was pregnant with my 3rd. Both were my fault. It's pregnancy brain!! After this comes 'mommy brain', when you forget things like eating breakfast or put your underwear on inside out, or forget to take your 5 year old for her check up (my latest)... you adapt to it and survive, but pregnancy/mommy brain gives me lots of laughs along the way ;) You're normal!!

We all do silly stuff when we're pregnant. I had a strange dream that my husband was in the garage and needed help, so I ran down the hall, but didn't turn the corner quickly enough and ran into the wall. Broke my foot. Yeah.

You think of your baby first when you eat, I'll bet. Your subconscious will tell you when something is particularly bad to do. Trust yourself. And, the fact that you felt comfortable moving a heavy garage door - even with the growing encumberment of pregnancy - means that you are probably a generally healthy woman. Good for you! I know women who wouldn't dream of wrestling with a stuck door - even not pregnant. We don't give our amazing bodies enough credit. Pregnancy is not incapacitating.

Hang in there, momma. And, congratulations!

I couldn't remember my address once when I was pregnant and felt like a real dingbat while the lady patiently waited for me to remember. I still feel like I do dumb things and make silly mistakes that I never did before I became a mother. I think the baby sucks all of your brain cells.

My OB told me once that lifting heavy things doesn't usually harm the baby, but with a different center of balance, soft ligaments and everything else that goes with being pregnant, it can out the mama is some serious discomfort or cause her some injury. Don't be too h*** o* yourself. When I was 5 1/2 months pregnant with our first, I thought camping was a good idea. Tent camping. I insisted I that I didn't need an air mattress for two nights. I also didn't mind when we camped away from the potties (even though camping closer was offered). "What's wrong with peeing in the bushes?" I commented. Ha. Ever tried squatting and peeing while 5 1.2 months pregnant? I don't advise it, it's comical, but not pretty in the slightest. To top it off it was a tubing trip. I couldn't go with everyone because of the rough water and rocks. I had to sit in the shallow water all alone. I still wonder what the hell I was thinking. My incident of stupidity was preplanned. At least yours were just moments of being caught off guard. :) Hang in there mama!

I agree with Rachel, it is very common. I have always heard it called
"Baby Brain". It's almost like all your normal rational thinking has just left your body and for some reason these silly ideas seem normal to you now. It happens to every one, just think of it as part of the pregnancy process. When I was pregnant with my first I was working and made all sorts of really silly mistakes, and could not believe I had done those things when they were brought to my attention. Don't be too h*** o* yourself, any woman who has carried a child, has experienced "Baby Brain"

Lifting heavy things does not hurt the baby. It only has potential throw YOU out of whack since your joints are looser right now.

I continued with my workouts - which include heavy weight lifting - up until I delivered both of my kids. I was regularly squatting 40 lbs on top of the 30 that I'd gained with each. It was totally fine.

You feel normal, and so you act normal. You're pregnant, not crippled! If something doesn't feel right, your body will tell you that you need to rest. Don't stress out about everything you do. It'll be a long 9mos otherwise!

I thought this was going to be a totally different kid of posting! I really didn't limit myself physically while pregnant- it's not a life altering condition and aside from being aware of when something "hurt" my doctor was pretty clear on the fact that general safety practices (should you have been lifting that box in any state without help) were the guidelines..

I did, however do a lot of stupind things while pregnant like bursting into tears (I mean legit sobs) in the vet's office b/c our cat had gained a pound. Seriously. My "crazy mind" went immediately to dialysis for a cat with diabetes and what if we need to put him down and what if...what if... what if.. After I calmed down, the vet laughed and suggested that if I was this worked up over the cat maybe my husband should handle the pediatrician's visits!

When I was about 39 weeks (literally 9 days before my daughter was born!) I was at a 4th of July lake party and I took my just turned 2yr old son on a wave runner ride with me! Everyone thought I was nuts! We just putted around and we had life jackets on, plus I grew up driving those things, so I knew what I was doing, but no one else (besides hubby) knew that I knew what I was doing. The life jacket barely fit!!
Oh and also when I was pregnant with #2, I painted my son's room orange - like staight up pumpkin orange and green trim!!!!

I did it too. We moved when I was 8 months, into a 3rd floor apartment... Naturally my fiance was only letting me carry the 'small' boxes and unload them while he was carting all the furniture and heavy junk up the 2 flights of stairs. I grabbed a 'small' box that probably weighed about 50 lbs. Got it up to the apartment, and when my fiance caught up to me he asked if I had seen the box.. I told him I had carried it up, and got grounded to unpacking only. lol.

I had a craving for pepperoni when I was pregnant and ate about a package of pepperoni a day all the way from when I found I was preggers up I stopped breast feeding. Later on, I realized all the nitrates I ate that I exposed my baby to when I was pregnant and I got so angry at myself. Then I realized I could turn back the clock. There was nothing I can do about now. My child is 2 now and is in perfect health, I also have exposed him to 0 nitrates since I nixed the pepperoni habit (not even a hotdog, lol)

You are fine. We had a neighbor dog that we were very fond of. She got out one morning and was hit by a car. At 38 weeks pregnant, I went into the street, stopped traffic lifted up the dog (a 50 lb dog) and carried her to our front door. I then banged on the neighbors door to no answer. Then opened our door and screamed for my husband. We dashed to the vet (him with no shoes and shirt and me with no shoes) but it was too late. I not only pulled a muscle in my groin leaving me in a large amount of pain, but then had the very unpleasant task of telling my neighbor his dog was dead. Only afterwards did I sit down and think, "What the hell was I thinking?". It happens, we just react and think about the what if's later.

You're normal. You feel good, your body works fine, it doesn't occur to you that there's anything deficient about you! That's good!! Be reasssured that, 99.99999% of the time, lifting something won't hurt your baby. You can pull a muscle just like you can when you are not pregnant, but just because it's in the area of your uterus, it doesn't mean it affects the baby. There are a few women with very high risk pregnancies who need to be extra careful, but they know it and it occupies their thinking and worrying on a constant basis so they are very vigilant. But, for most of us, pregnancy isn't a disease and we can function very well.

In the future, have the UPS guy put the package down for you, even if you have to put a note on the inside of the front door saying "You're pregnant, knucklehead!" LOL. And see if you have a neighbor who will be "on call' when you need heavy lifting done or are fooling around with a stubborn garage door. Maybe your husband can do the same for someone else on the block. It's great to build a network of helpful neighbors anyway, and there are nice people who don't mind a call at 10:00 PM in an emergency.

What worried me more when I was pregnant was arriving at a destination and having no memory of the drive, or doing other clueless things. So, hang in there and remember that healthy babies are born all the time to hormonal women.

Shame on the UPS man for giving you a heavy package! Shame, shame! I ordered a dresser/changing table a few months ago for the 4th baby I'm carrying and I offered to help the FedEx guy carry up the box. It was huge. He took one look at me and said, "Oh no you are not helping me." This nice man carried this 100 + lb box up my stairs AND brought it inside. I think you should give yourself a break. I had a temper tantrum with piece of furniture several days ago and I gave myself a bruise on my belly...and my belly is bigger than yours, I am betting. I am 33 weeks pregnant. I clean the bathroom with chemicals because I get tired of waiting for my husband to help. I wouldn't worry too much unless you started to bleed and cramp.

When I was pregnant with my son, I would always pick up my daughter (who was almost two) without thinking about it first. Don't worry, you'll be fine. Unless you have a "high-risk" pregnancy that forces you to be careful (some women even have to be on bed rest), the occasional mistake of lifting something heavy won't hurt you. My mom was a nurse while she was pregnant with me, and she had to be on her feet all the time. I think she told me once that she was still doing patient lifting, which, to me, doesn't sound like the smartest thing to do, but it was her first pregnancy and she was young so I guess she didn't think there was anything wrong with it...and I turned out fine. :-)

Pregnancy is a time of fatigue and crazy hormones, and especially if this is your first one, it is a time of worry, worry, worry. So you are very normal. Take good care of yourself, eat well, and destress as much as you can (yoga really helps). Congratulations on your baby!

I almost burned the house down. Yup. Fire.

I had planned to make a apple pie for after dinner. Since I had morning sickness 24/7 I had to kinda regulate my time around food. So I made the pastry dough, sliced the apples and figured I'd assemble it all and bake while we were eating dinner. Sounds right? Right?!

Well, next thing I knew I turn around and I see flames coming out of my oven. So I run and turn the oven off, close doors round the kitchen, and don't open the oven door. But the smoke is getting thick and I could not think about what else to do for a fire. So I call 911 and argue with them - telling them NOT to send a fire truck. Just tell me if I have done everything right. I knew by the time they got here the fire would have burned itself out. The poor dispatch guy was screaming at me to put my shoes on and GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! (that poor man)

Shore 'nuff the fire was out by the time they got here. But they were great - took one look at my huge belly and brought in all the fans to blow the smoke out of the house. Then they asked my name. I refused to give it to them (lol) Did I mention that I have about 12 firemen in the family....if they ever found out I would never live it down. So the guys leave - but I know something is wrong and its really bothering me...........but my brain was so fuzzy I couldn't figure out what...

That night I woke up at 3am with a bang - scared as all get out - the oven should not have been on! It was only lunch time - not dinner! I was scared to be alone after that. I mean part of my brain knew something was wrong but the the other part didn't know? Scary! Talked to my Dr. and she explained "Baby Brain" Those powerful little hormones....I had MANY other situations during pregnany and after but this was the scariest.

As a side note I didn't really alter my physical routine....not till the final month or 2 did I try not to life heavy things. But I agree with another poster - why did that UPS guy NOT tell you how heavy that parcel was? Maybe he had "Baby Brain" too!

Don't beat yourself up! It seems to me you are coming down WAY too h*** o* yourself. We are only pregnant for 9 months - to alter our lifelong habits and not make mistakes is impossible! Slow down....take a breath and forgive yourself...tho I believe there is nothing to forgive here. Your OK your baby is OK and your all going to be OK!

Its normal to be super worried about doing something wrong when you're pregnant. I'm sure you'll be fine. Go in for a check up with your OB if you really are worried or you start having regular intense contractions. Otherwise try to relax about it.

I had baby brain quite bad....

we had been saving money like mad for baby stuff and to use when I was on maternity leave and then I decided I just HAD to pay bills one day. So, I paid 3 or 4 bills and was quite proud of my self!!!!! A couple days later I got a call from the gas company asking why I had written a check for over $6,000.00 for a $200.00 gas bill. I had written the amount for the BALANCE of our checking account instead of the balance of the bill!!!!!!!!!

All I could do was laugh! I explained I was pregnant and not in my right mind! Thankfully - the woman said she wouldn't even go through the proper channels and she just mailed the check back to me and we started all over again.

It will get better. After baby brain, comes mommy brain as one mama said.

But it all clears up when the youngest child is like 5. So - just hang in there!

Unless you're having a problem with your pregnancy, it'll take a lot to hurt your baby, but your muscles can hurt. Stay in touch with your doctor if you're ever not sure. I'm guessing this is your first pregnancy. Stop and focus and think things through. As you go along, these kinds of things could cause you to go into preterm labor so take care. Are you reading about the baby and getting things ready? That will help you stay focused. Good luck! By the way, I hope you're seriously planning to breastfeed. La Leche League can be a big help to you and there are 3 Groups in Macomb County. Look at www.lli.org. Lots of women come while pregnant and you'd make friends and get great support as well as info if you did. We all do dumb things sometimes!
