Any Chiropracters Here?

Injured my back in June 11 lifting a heavy tv. I have 2 pinched nerves in the L5 area. Granted it is now better than it was then. At that time...waking up every morning was like having a baby...and couldn't walk. But I still have daily and almost constant pain...sometimes down my leg to my ankle. My specialist gave me more pain killers and said that my siactic nerve is the length of my leg and takes a month per inch for it to heal. I asked him if it would heal by itself and he said yes. Somehow I just don't believe it....I have had no real change for months. Do you think that going to a chiropracter could help unpinch that nerve? Thank you in advance!

I am not a chiro...but speaking from experience Yes...a good chiro can help unpinch the nerve!! I hope you will take the time and head to one...hopefully you have some friends/family that can give you a good reccomendation. And please don't expect results from the first adjustment...you might even feel worse...but it can lead to good results. Go in and have a talk with one or a few to get a better idea. A lot of them will do free consults if you ask.

Your doctor has prescribed pain killers and I've heard that 1) they block feeling the pain even when (though) you are still hurting that part of your back and 2) they can become addictive. Ask the pharmacist if these meds are pain killers or muscle relaxants.

From my years with my chiropractor, I have found it true that the muscles are cramping up in response to the nerve injury (pinch) [your muscles react this way in an attempt to stop you from hurting yourself more. A vicious cycle starts up where the cramped muscles aggravate the nerve and the muscles keep reacting to the hurt nerve (cramping and knotting up all the more).

If your insurance or health plan is flexible enough, try to see an M.D. who is (what's the right word?) chiro-friendly(?). Another opinion about the meds could help. Ibuprofen has become my "friend" because of its anti-inflammatory effects. My doctor checks on my liver function every year to watch out for damage from the ibuprofen.

As with any doctor, don't hesitate to visit a couple of chiropractors and see who/which best makes you feel confident in them.

Oh, and obtain a copy of the x-rays (nowadays they are put on a CD) from your doctor and bring it/them to your chiro consultation appointment.

Good luck!

I am not a chiropractor, but I have been helped by chiropractic adjustments several times. Just make sure you go to a good one!

I absolutely LOVE my chiropractor. He has helped me tremendously. I have sciatica and degenerative disc disease and I injured my back lifting a mattress. I herniated a disc and I couldn't move at all. I was going to go to a regular doctor but I knew they were just going to refer me to an orthopedist who would then probably refer me to a surgeon (which was a NO NO to me). There is no curing my degenerative disc disease but he has fixed the herniated disc and helps with my sciatica flare ups. The only thing you can do is just try it. You will not see results immediately but over time you should see a difference (usually two - three weeks)...it's cheaper too.....

It's more likely a herniated disc than a pinched nerve. And absolutely a chiropractor can help! That, ice, and massage therapy help me manage my lower back disc injury. Unfortunately when you injure a disc it can come back repeatedly, mine does at least twice a year. More if I'm under heavy stress or hurt it again by lifting/falling, etc. at its worst I got lidocaine injections to ease inflammation and acupuncture as well. I've been to chiros my whole life and have worked for them for 20 years now. Would have been one had I not met my husband and got pregnant before we planned to! :)

I am not a chiropractor, but I have been going since I was 17 (41 now) and YES it would help a lot. It would be much better than taking pain pills forever. If you have x-rays bring them with you and/or they should take some to be sure of what’s going on with your back.

I know it would be a long way to go from Conroe, but Dr. Timothy Zeller in Greenway Plaza area (59 & Buffalo Speedway) is awesome!

One example I personally had with chiropractic treatment was when I was diagnosed by Brown Hand Center with carpal tunnel and trigger thumb, and they recommended surgery, but Dr. Zeller worked it out after a couple of months, and after 2 years, no carpal tunnel or trigger thumb! Love, love, love my chiro!! He would be the first place I would go if I had back, neck, shoulder, or joint pain of any kind.
