Another West Nile Question (Updated)

I have asked this before but i just cant shake my concern. My state has now had 39 west nile cases (6 being in my county) and now my state has had 3 deaths. Their ages or health conditions were not given. I have done my research and everything says less than 1% die from the virus and it is highly unlikly to have a fatal reaction unless you are aging or have health issue. I have hada few symptoms myself which is why i am worried. We have TONS of miquitos (cant spell it) around here. My husband says its all in my head because yes my symtoms didnt start until after i read about it being around and also i have been known to get sick around fall. I am going to turn 21 this friday so i am young. No i can not go to a hospital or doctor because my family is in a financial crisis and my husband already has tons of outstanding medical bills. I guess i am just wondering what are the odds of me having it and what are the odds of me dying from it at 20-21. Thanks for all your info! (If it helps, i have had symtoms like sore neck but i do sleep hard, headaches but ive had them everyday since i was 19, some sore throat, chest pains, no fever, no change in eating or drinking or sleeping. I have had an upset stomach and diarehia for a couple of weeks and all the symptoms that come with diarehia but so has my mom and she tested negative for west nile)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your answers! They have all been helpful. Ive done what you have said and think happy "Im not sick" thoughts and ive noticed ive gotten mostly better. I still have headaches but like i said thats been a regular thing for me for over a year. I am going to get that checked sometime this month. I still have a sore neck but i also have sore shoulders so im thinking i just sleep horrible. Last night i woke with my neck bent almost under my shoulder! I do have a slight sore throat/cough and a runny nose/conjestion so i think i just have seasonal alliergies. Hopefully ill be better for my birthday week.

Girl - you can talk yourself in to ANYTHING!! The mind is a VERY powerful tool...

Sounds like you worry a TON and are seeking symptoms. Instead of concentrating on feeling bad - why not take a positive spin and say "I FEEL FINE"?

If you have chest pains - no matter your financial situation, you should be at the doctor's office or Emergency room - period. end of story.

Could be you have a long lasting stomach bug or food poisoning...sounds like you really need to go to your primary care physician and have a check up and get all of your concerns out of the way so that you can stop worrying and wondering - because I can tell you, if you don't do this - you will end up giving yourself an ulcer with your worries about whether or not you have West Nile Virus.

The chances are slim that you have it and even more slim of you dying from it unless you have a compromised immune system. So start thinking positive thoughts and stop dwelling on things you might have....sorry - this will come out wrong since you can't hear me - but you sound like a hypochondriac....

I tell my kids and I'll tell you - ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING...you can think yourself sick....and you think yourself healthy.

Not knowing Mississippi, I googled "Ridgeland Mississippi low cost medical clinic" and came up with this hit...

http://www.needymeds.org/free_clinics.taf?_function=list&...

Maybe there is a clinic on this list? I realize you said you are in a financial crisis and hubby has outstanding medical bills, but when my hubby was unemployed, one of the job groups he went to said if you need to go to the doctor, do it..... these clinics may be able to help you or they may also have a sliding fee scale to make the costs lower.

Good luck!

It doesn't seem highly likely, but it is possible. If it is that upsetting to you I think you are just going to have to go to the doctor. If you tell the office up front that you don't have insurance but you are worried about these particular symptoms they will work with you. Lab fees can get expensive, so that's an issue, but if you ask them not to test for anything else besides this and maybe anything that the doctor seems adamant about testing for based only on your symptoms, then that's better. They can probably give you a general estimate and if you're willing to just pay up front your cost will be lower than the bill to the insurance, trust me, they just want their money, so be honest and I bet you'll come to a conclusion.

There are a number of viral infections going around in our area too, some sinus related and another stomach virus. Seems to be that seasonal stuff. Don't make yourself sick from worry alone. Take over-the-counter meds to help with your headaches and there's also meds to help with your stomach problems. Look for all of these in the pharmacy area. Relax and I hope you feel better soon!
