Hi there,
my newly 6-year-old got an AG doll for her birthday from her grandma. She loves it and is asking for outfits. She will get one or two for christmas. We did a build a doll vs. classic character. But I was thinking of buying her a set of books. She is really attracted to the Molly character so I was going to explore that route. We already know she digs the doll and accessories. my question is, do you think she will get much out of me reading her the books at this age? She loves reading time and we read her the laura inles wilder series but she was not quite focused for those longer stories with minimal illustration. I'm wondering how the AG doll books compare. thx

What can I do next?

Can you check some out from the library first, just to see if she's into them or not?

My 8-year old daughter LOVES the American Girl series, and I'm pretty sure she started reading them when she was 6. Little House... books are too long for a 6 year old to follow, I think; the length of the AG books and their story lines are more appropriate for her. She might be able to read an AG book by herself, or maybe you can read it to her. In terms of what to do now, you might consider buying one or two Molly books as a trial and then rely on the library for the rest in the future. There are literally dozens of AF books with many different series, and if your library is anything like ours, you will find them all there. We have bought a few of the books when she saw one in the bookstore and wanted them, and she has occasionally reread them, however they don't seem to be the kind of story that she wants to revisit and therefore spending money to own them doesn't make sense to me. Enjoy!

I read my daughter the Kristin series when she was 5. We had started reading the Little House series when she was 4. I thought the Kristin books were a lot easier for her to follow (both series happen at about the same time period). We have read two of the Julie books. They are a little more mature. They take place in the 70s and the character's parents get divorced.

I say go for them. When I read them I seem to remember them being a little more captivating than the little house series, and the illustrations are in color. Plus you will get more out of them when she is older and wants to reread them herself!

My daughter loved the books at that age. She started reading them independently in 2nd grade though. To this day she loves historical fiction.

My eight year old daughter loves the books. They are quite touching. She didn't start reading them until she was six or seven. The Costco near me actually has a lot of the book sets for a fairly reasonable price. They might even come with a mini.

My 9 year old has a lot of AG doll books, and other AG books like the care and keeping of you. She loves them. I've tried to read out loud together (we also have a 5 and 7 yr old), but it didn't hold the younger ones interest. They DO like the Book "into the spotlight". They can choose which way the story goes and the purpose of the book is that the can imagine themselves as the main character. There are other books in the series-it says AG Innerstar University-if that helps.

The books are all very good and some are excellent. Yes, get her the set of Molly books (and the one book about Molly's friend Emily as well). These books really can get a kid interested in history. Six is not too young at all. We read all of the series then available, when my daughter was between the ages of four and eight.
Read them together with her and you and she will enjoy them!
