Hi Moms,
My little girls has had a bellyache the last few days. On Friday night she felt like she had to go poo and or vomit. She ended up doing neither. She had the stomach pain till Sat. morning. She begged me to stay home with her, but I needed to work. I took her to the babysitter. When we picked her up the babysitter said she thought it was my daughter was spoiled. Kas(my daughter had not gone to the bathroom or been sick all day long and did eat during the day. Saturday night she ate very little and complained the pain had not gone away. We are giving her Tylenol and Pepto for her stomach. We had her to the Docs tonight (Mon.) He says it could be constipation, but don't treat that with things to make her go just in case it isn't that. His suggestion was to watch her stools for a couple of weeks and catalog what she does. He said giving her Pepto and Tylenol would not hurt on a needed basis. To me this is of no comfort. My girl is still in pain and I don't have any answers as what to do for her She has also had bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. The Doc says this could also be caused be constipation if it is that My question is has any one else had this situation with their child and what to do?. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. H.

So What Happened?

Doctor finally sent her for an X-ray. She has a lot of stool on the right side they said. Give her Dulcolax to empty her out (2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. He said continue till stool is runny and soft. Okay first dose and she goes 3-4 times. The stool is runny so we stop the pills. Next time she goes it one hard little lump. Called the doc again. his nurse calls back and says why aren't we still giving her the dulcolax, she needs to empty out. I don't get it, I don't want her dependent on pills. She hardly eats because she feel fill and still has belly ache in the lower belly. She is only drinking water and Gatorade. Her doc made an appointment with a Ped gastennologist, This isn't for 2 weeks. My baby still has pain and I don't know what else to do. I am going to a day off of work and call other Peds for a second opinion. How do you give her something to empty out and send her to school??

Sounds like my daughter. She had lots of stomach aches. We had her in for X-rays for something unrelated and the X-rays showed that she was really stopped up. Have her drink lots of water and eat lots of fiber. That was pretty much all we did. Maybe ask if it would be ok to give her a stool softener.

The diarrhea could be feces going around a blockage if there is not much coming out.

I don't understand the doctor's recommendation. Perhaps he means nothing by mouth. I've used glycerine suppositories for 50 years. They contain no medication. Insert one as far up her anus as you can. Sounds gross but it's easy to do. You can wear gloves if this sounds too messy. It's really not messy at all.

My grandson had chronic constipation. However, he didn't vomit. on his doctor's recommendation we gave him ? Mixed in water. I also contains no medication. It causes the stool to loosen and pass by absorbing water. It's a natural product and won't hurt her if she isn't constipated.

Sorry I can't think of it's name.

I suggest you check this out with doctor.

My kids get belly ache when they are constipated - and yes, for sure you can have diarrhea with constipation (seems odd, but it happens). Sometimes if you check the stool you will notice some mucus with it too (some stringy stuff) - this can indicate the stool has been in their system for quite a while.

Some of my kids have milk (lactose) intolerance and they get bouts of feeling like they will vomit, to gas (which can be very painful), and then constipation and diarrhea. There's a definite link between them drinking milk or having cereal for example with regular milk, and belly discomfort. If she has this often, it's something to consider. My kids (just by switching to lactose free milk) haven't had the issues any more.

But all kids can get constipated. Apples and applesauce works like a charm for my kids to help if they get constipated. That and drink plenty of water.

Good luck :)

Make sure your daughter is drinking half her weight in ounces of water every day. (so if she weighs 50 pounds, she needs to drink 25 ounces of water/day.) Most kids (and adults) are severely dehydrated. When I say drink water, that means water; not milk, not juice, not soda pop, no tea or energy drinks.

My daughter when she was 6 became so constipated that she had to have a colonics done (she battled with constipation and encopresis from babyhood up until we changed our diet). You don't want to let it get to that point. She used a lot of Miralax when she was little (which if I had known then what I know now--that it has a lot of plastic in it--I would have never given it to her) as well as laxatives. Again, NOT the correct thing to do; the correct thing to do is to take out inflammatory foods/foods that cause constipation (cow dairy is a BIG culprit) and incorporate foods that help eliminate; that would be veges and fruit because of their soluble/insoluble fiber (but watch the fruit; fruit is high on the glycemic index, and parents need to watch their children's total intake of sugar. Diabetes is now a national issue, and more and more children are getting it).

In my daughter's case, it all stemmed from her Sensory Processing Disorder issues and a gluten and soy intolerance; we also took her off dairy and started eating organic with lots and lots of veges. The dietary changes were what helped finally to get her regular; she goes BM almost every day now and rarely ever goes 2 days without going (she is now 15 years old).

All they have to do is an X-ray or ultra sound to see if she has a blockage or is packed. Go to another doc or ask this one to actually work to find a diagnosis.

It could also be a stomach virus. But pooh goes around blockages. It often comes out as diarrhea or soft stool. You can't tell by "if" they're having pooh or not. The pain and other symptoms are the give away. If this was my granddaughter her docs would have poked her tummy and done an X-ray for sure before letting her leave the office.

Nausea, and diarrhea are common with constipation. My son tends to get impactions higher up that cause both of these problems and we have to treat him with MiraLAX over long-term to clear the impaction and get things moving normally again. If it continues ask your doctor to x-ray to see if there could be a problem.

The best ways to avoid further problems and to help treat this one (if it is constipation) is to drink a ton of water and other clear fluids, to avoid caffeine, and to keep the child moving and as active as possible.

Vomiting because of constipation? That's doubtful.

Maybe she has a flu bug?
