I think you should try using young living essential oils. THEY REALLY WORK! My kids get ear aches or ichy ears and I put some lemongrass or lavender on a q-tip and gently rub around ear canel. Don't put drops of oil directly in the ear. you can also use a carrier oil, like cookig oil or olive oil etc. if the oil seams to be to warm. I don't know about the benadrly, but have you tried covering his hands or head... he is old enough to take things off, but once he is asleep you might be able to put socks over his hands or a lightweight infant cap over his head.

If cutting his fingernails is dificult, try when he is sleeping and you might be able to get them shorter- I hope someone can help you more soon...

Poor little guy! Before you give him meds of any sort do consider that infants are especially sensitive to antihistamines like Benadryl. This drug also makes many people feel woozy and uncomfortable. There are several possible causes for your son's itchy ears, but one simple thing that might help him is to cut sugar and processed foods (cereal, crackers, etc. made from white flour) out of his diet and/or out of your diet if you are breastfeeding. These things can promote yeast overgrowth, which is very, very itchy, and which can sometimes be a problem in the ear canals. Also avoid soap. Keep soap and shampoo out of his ears. These can be irritating and/or allergenic.

A helpful home remedy that often helps little ones with itchy ears of all varieties is white vinegar ear drops. Try this recipe from the Colorado Children's Hospital:

For itchy ear canal, use ½ strength white vinegar by diluting it with equal parts water. Place 2 drops in each ear canal daily for three days (Reason: restore the normal acid pH). (EXCEPTION: ear drainage, ear tubes or hole in eardrum.)

One other thing: you may already be doing this, but clipping your baby's fingernails very short should help keep him from drawing blood.

Finally, if this becomes a chronic problem related to allergies, homeopathic treatment is something to consider. It has helped other children (including mine) with allergies without using shots or prescription medicines.

My 9 month old does the same thing. I took him to the doctor and was told by two different ones oh dont worry about it.. Its not an earinfection. Finally i took him in again cause he was pulling on his ears so badly that it bled all over his crib. I saw a different doctor and they finally gave me antibotic that is a creme, and also told me that is my son's habit. Instead of sucking his thumb it seems that his is to pull at his ears. So i just put the creme on for 10 days and then they were healed. Three weeks later he was doing it again so i just used the same cream and it cleared up again. For the habit i have been given him other things to do. If we are in the car, i make sure his ears are covered so he doesnt fiddle with them. If he is getting really tired, then i give him his glowworm. The glowworm is queit enough for him and i think the lights on it keep him distated enough to not pull or sctrach at his ears. My daughter has rubbed the inside of her ears when she's tired from the time she was a baby. Now that she's five, she doesn't do it very often, but when she was younger, she did it all the time. I would sometimes worry that she was going to hurt herself, she rubbed so hard. I would suggest keeping his fingernails really short. He may do it to soothe himself when he's tired/stressed.

Does your baby show any other signs that he may have allergies (i.e., rash, diarrhea, runny nose, etc.)? I'd hold off giving him any drugs until you consult your dr. He may be scratching at his ears because he's teething. In the mean time, make sure his nails are clipped short and put him to bed with baby mittens or with PJs that have the "mittens" built into them (if you think he'll pull the mittens off).

You might try using Vanicream to reduce the itching. National Jewish recommended it for our son's eczema. Target and a few other pharmacies carry it, but it is a wonder cream, and no medications. If he has dry itchy skin, you might ask about eczema. We've had good success with treating even severe eczema without using any medications.

I agree with Lana, we're very active essential oils users. The other thing I wanted to mention is that my 7 mo old daughter has done that a lot. But our doctor said (after checking her ears and seeing not a thing was wrong) that she could just have some sinus pressure and that's why she has been rubbing them. I've also noticed that when she cries she rubs her ears and if I don't have her nails clipped she'll scratch her ears and they'll bleed.

Yes, benadryl is safe. Consult your doctor for dosages. My daughter is 19 lbs and gets .9 mL of infant medicines like tylenol or benadry. For children's medicines like dimetapp, she gets 3/4 of a tsp. Those dosages are based on her weights.

put a small piece of cotton in his ear. or may be put ear plugs they do make them for little ears. and you can put gloves on the baby when they go to sleep. like mitts when they are first born.

It sounds like he is allergic to something. You know what is there something your little one really likes to eat all the time or is there something your little one likes to sleep on all the time. Sometimes they get allergic to whatever they are addicted too. Have you tried Naet treatments. It worked for my son......

My little girl does the same thing. I just keep her nails cut short and don't worry about it.

Your local pharmacy can help with the correct dosage of Benadryl. You just need to let them know your childs weight.

I definitely wouldn't give Beadryl on a daily basis, what about an ear drop? Call your Dr.'s office and ask what the recommended dose for a 20 lb. child is.

Have the ear doctor check him for a condition (name slips my mind)that deals with dry ear canal. I have it and it causes constant ithing to the ear and then when scratching it, it breaks the skin open and can cause a terribe infection. They have a cream for it and once rubbed in the ear it stops the dryness and the itching and calms the nerves in the ear.
