Get a second opinion from a different hospital all together. Most doctors do a full hysterectomy when a partial will due the job just fine and, in some cases, the situation does not call for one at all. Sometimes getting a fresh set of eyes and opinions can change the whole situation. Good luck.

I am now 60 yrs old. I had a hysterectomy in 1994, at the age of 47. I too had my tubes tied 10 yrs previous to the surgery. I was out of work for 6 weeks. Surgery went fine. The only thing that bothered me most was, when I read my pathology report I saw that the Dr. removed both my ovaries, when only one was bad. This through me right into menapause and I had to immediately go on harmones. At this time I no longer take harmones. But, as for as the hysterectomy is concerned, I love it. No more monthly's. I have had a complete hysterectomy at the age of 29. I had endometrioses and Varicose veins on my uterus. I had mood swings and was just not a nice person to be around. My periods were so painful I was unable to walk and often was doubled over in pain. My family has said since the surgery I am a much nicer person. I do take replacement hormones. I have noticed I am not as moody or sad as I used to be. The surgery was the best thing that I could have done. I have no more painful periods, no more moody swings and my family does not have to walk on egg shells.
I did take my full 6 weeks off work although I could have gone back earlier. I was unable to do a vaginally but the recovery was not bad at all.
I know it is scary but I am so glad I did it.

I will have agree with most of the women here. I for one just had it done little over two weeks ago. I am feeling fine and believe me I do not reget it at all. They did mine vaganely and my recover time has been fast. I still have some pane but that is to be expected only being two weeks out. Most of the women you talk to will tell you to get it done and you will fine those who say don't. You need to listen to your own heart and the doctors, they do know what thay are doing. I had my hysterectomy 3 months ago due to fibroids and endometriosis. In my case there was no alternative. I went back to work the next week (I only answer the phones and no lifting). The surgery was not difficult and I had to be cut from one hip bone to the other as mine could not be done vaginally. I was terrified as the only other surgery I had ever had was a c-section 7 years ago. Talk to your doctor about the option of having the surgery done vaginally. If you can do it that way I understand that you feel better in a couple weeks. I was feeling better in about a month. I am on a hormone replacement, but I am feeling good again. Best of luck...

Ask your Dr about a vaginal hysterectomy, I had one 11 years ago and it was great, you still will not be able to lift very much at 1st but it is less evasive and minimal pain. It was the best thing I did for me. I had a prolapsed uterus and that only happens when you have your babies vaginally and both of mine were c sections so we do not know what happened as to the prolapse. And I was only 25

I had a hysterectomy at 35 and don't regret it at all. For me it was a quality of life issue. My cycles were so bad I had a hard time being mom and wife. A great place I found for answering questions and finding support was hystersisters.com . They have a section for discussions before surgery and after surgery.

The first 5 weeks were the hardest for me, especially around week 3. I had to have the abdominal cut though, I understand different types are not as h*** o* you. I was not allowed to drive for 6 weeks. I thought it was ridiculous but then I started driving and it left me absolutely exhausted. After 7 0r 8 weeks I hadnt had any pain in weeks and was feeling great, although I did still tire easily.

I had a partial and I can say over 10 years later, it was one of the best decisions in my life. I knew I had to take it easy for several weeks after to heal but during that time and reading many books I remember it as pretty easy. No more monthy periods!!!!!!!!!! Praise God

hi H.. I went through the process of a hysterectomy about 2 years ago. Although I am older than you, I too was having female problems. As for the surgery, it is generally a 2 day stay in the hospital and you will most likely be out of work for 6 weeks. I have had several surgeries so the process did not bother me. The healing depends on whether they do a vaginal or abdomen. It is so nice though not to have to have periods anymore. Good luck.

Hi H., 3 years ago I had to have a hysterectomy too..I was a bit older at 41...I was having problems with bleeding all the time and it would not stop and this went on for months. My Dr. said that it was time, and I knew we weren't going to have any more children (although I would of liked more) so I did it. I can honestly say the recovery and such was not a big deal. Of course both my children were born by C Section so I knew what to expect. Really the hardest part at first is getting in and out of the bed. I went back to work in 6 weeks. Hope this helps some..

I went back to your previous post as I saw this is part 2. Have you tried counseling? It sounds like you may have some symptoms of depression. Doctors of course usually take the medical approach; just know there may be other approaches to consider.

I HIGHLY encourage you to look at other options.
This surgery can be a setup for future health problems.
I was able to avoid a hysterectomy.

I also have female problems and a little older that you. For me, natural progesterone was a solution. It is a cream you get from a health food store or a naturopath doctor.

If you are in Oklahoma, Sherry's Discount Drug in Edmond does hormone testing and it is much more accurate than the testing at a doctors office. Sherry is a pharmacist but from my understanding believes in natural remedies first then the other stuff.

I would really suggest researching natural remedies on the web so you can avoid the surgery.

There is almost always an excellent alternative to surgery. I'd start out with acupuncture. It really is extremely effective for many problems. After thousands of years in practice, they've got to have something right (by comparison, allopathic medicine - what you get from the dr.s and the hospitals - is only about 70 years old and seems to get a lot of things wrong). But anyway, please write me with your symptoms and we'll take it from there.

I understand your fears. I had to have a hysterectomy at 28. I had a partial, then 10 months later, a complete. That was many years ago. So many surgeries are done laproscopically now and many hysterectomy may be done vaginally. Not sure about your situation, but if you really need one, you are probably going to feel a lot better physically after. Due to my age at the time, I did do hormone replacement therapy for many years, and got off of them about 3 yrs. ago because I felt I had received the benefits from them that I needed to. I am now 50. Prior to the surgery I had pretty bad pain for several years and finally on an emergency basis, I had to have it done. I was sad about it, because I wanted more kids, but I was so relieved not to be in pain anymore, I dealt with it pretty well. The surgeries now are so much better for recovery purposes, within a few weeks people are back to work. May in a lighter capacity, but recovery goes pretty quick if no complications. The sooner you can go walking, the quicker you can get back on your feet. It really helps strengthen you quickly. Also, drink lots of water and get in your protein so you can get your energy level back quickly. Most people I have talked to that have had a hysterectomy done, are back in their routines in no time. I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago and haven't regreted it once. I was out of work about 2 weeks but only because my dr. was adamant about me staying off work. I actually felt good after a week.

I had it done and it was the best thing I ever did. What takes so long to heal is your bladder. That is what they told me anyway. I felt good in a few days.

May I ask what your problems are? If they are excessive bleeding or fibroids, this can be solved by natural progesterone cream, in which you may be low. Hysterectomies are way too frequently performed unecessarily and women are left with worse problems. Check out dr lee's website. There are many doctors not that understand the need for natural hormone replacement and are willing to prescribe it. If you have a compound pharmacy in town, call them for doctors that are open to these more natural methods and very possibly save your uterus!

ps. having your tubes tied predisposes you to a 50 % lower progesterone level, as I learned after mine were tied. That may be part of the reason that you need it, as I suspect you do. Many women today are estrogen dominant from eating hormone laden chicken, and estrogen in the environment in pesticides etc, and thus become low in progesterone.

Hello H.! I was 32 when i had to have my hysterectomy. My doctor didn't want to do it. However, I was in so very much pain with inflammation and my lower back, bleeding for more than 15 days every month and unable to leave my home as a result of such heavy cycles. The doctor discovered the endometriosis and felt the only option was then to remove the uterus. I kept my ovaries even though I'd had my tubes tied long before that surgery came up. For the sake of the natural flow of hormones i thought it best to keep the ovaries. The doc wanted to remove it all and put me on hormone therapy. However I am an all natural method of healing person. I use no prescription meds of any type. Hence, refused to do the hormone therapy when I had perfectly good ovaries to promote the proper amounts of the needed hormones. Eventually, I learned that my estrogen level had decreased and was creating some odd moods for me. I went to the health food store where the owner had been very educated in all areas of physical, emotional, and mental health as well as knowledgeable of the products she sold in her store. She prescribed for me some Evening Primrose Oil and some natural estrogen. Knowing my body as well I do made it easier for me to know when to stop the natural formulas. I've not used them or anything else since. I'm now 51 yrs old, still not even beginning to enter into menopause as far as I can tell! I feel great and have had no issues with hormones or physical illnesses of any type. Thank GOD for miracles and all around good health! My ovaries still function monthly as I feel them when it would be my time of the month just as I felt them as a kid during my cycle.

My sister had a partial hyserectomy one year ago. She was out of work for 6 weeks. The first few weeks were painful but now that she is healed she is the first one to say that surgery was worth it. She says to go through surgery and a few weeks of pain was worth not having the problems anymore.
