Hi Mama's! My son is 2 1/2 and I noticed a lump in his neck slightly larger than a pea. It's on the right side of his neck just above his collar bone. I'm going to schedule in appointment with his pediatrician, but was wondering if any of you have experienced this. He has no other signs of being sick. Thanks!
Thank you so much for all of your responses! You really helped ease my mind. I went to the ped today and she said it is a swollen lymphnode. She said this can happen even if there are no symptoms of illness. Because it the lump could move and was not warm (was not infected) that it was normal. She said it could take a few months to go away, but to come back if it gets larger or becomes infected.
My 4 yo has the same thing for about 6 months now. I took him to his DR and 2 ENTs and they all say they same thing that for some kids its normal nothing to worry unless it changes size!! But it is great to see I am not the only one with a child with this issue. Thanks moms!!
It's probably just a lymph node - it's fighting off an infection. There are tons of lymph nodes in your body (all over your body) and they swell when they are fighting off something. He probably isn't showing any signs of being sick because the lymph node is doing its job!!
My son is almost 6 years old and he has had one on the side of his neck for years. My pediatrician said for some kids thats normal......I am anxious to see what your ped says - please let me know. I will send you a personal email with my eamil address.
My Daughter has a couple of them on the side of her neck as well. They are her lymphoid's. The doctor said there isn't much that they can do, and just to watch and make sure that it doesn't get any bigger and it doesn't turn red and bother them. So far with Ali's it get a little bigger then it breaks back down to smaller ones. It gets a little bigger when she is is sick, but it doesn't bother her any. I hope that this helps.
My six yr old had one too. Closer to the back of his neck. I asked the Dr. any he said its enlarged Lymph nodes. He said not to worry and it has gone away now. Good luck!
It's good to get it checked, but it's probably what Melissa described. My daughter had one years ago and it went away and hasn't come back.
Ditto. My son (10 years) has had a lump for two years that the doctor said was lymph node. But it sure was a relief to hear him say it.
It could possibly be a swollen lymph node, possibly due to an ear infection, but you are definitely right to take him to the doctor.
A little boy in our playgroup had a lump on the back of his neck that turned out to be tuberculosis infection. He is and was fine. Never had any symptoms but had to take multiple antibiotics for over 6 months. I wouldn't worry too much but would for sure get it checked.

Of course, make the appt and ask a lot of questions but my son has had one as long as I can remeber and the doctor told me it was a calcified lymphnode.He also told me that because my son is so lean you see it more than most children that have more fat on their necks. So if your child is lean then you will notice these lumps more than others will in their kids.
Always go to the Dr. just to make sure though.
I have had the same experience as the other women. My now 7 year old had an enlarged lymph node at 2 years old, he is now 7 and throughout the last 5 years it has changed in size. The pediatrician told us it is normal for some kids to have this. I have also moved during this time and had another doctor see him and was told the same thing by his next doctor. He has had no problems or symptoms. Still have it check out though for your peace of mind and just to double check everything is okay.

My 6 yo has had a lump on his neck, slightly towards the back, just above his left shoulder for almost 2 years now. It varies in size, (its actually about pea sized right now, but has been up to marble sized). When we first discovered it, he was complaining that it hurt a little when he pressed on it, but that was his only complaint. The ped sent us to an ENT specialist, where I spent the $50 co-pay for literally 7 minutes of his time, and was told to watch it and come back in 6 months. (I'm still watching it but I havent gone back to the specialist, ped looks at it every year and doesnt seem concerned.) Apparently whatever it is is fairly common and not a big deal. I'd say don't worry about it just yet - get it checked out to be sure, but its probably nothing to worry about.
